sa kwarto gahimo sang project.”

Table 1 presents the effects of excessive homework on senior high

school students. Based on the table, the consequences of excessive homework

on senior high school students are deprivation of sleep, gaining weight due to

stress-eating, time-consuming, exhausting, loss of balance and focus,

uncertainty, and breakdowns, but on the other hand, it still has fruitful outcomes.

Cape responded that numerous tasks are challenging to accomplish and time-

consuming. It is supported by her response that “mag-take siya sang time as a

student, tapos kis-a pagdamo-damo nagid hirimuon, di mo na bal-an ang unahon

mo,” which means that it is difficult for her to manage her time because of the

excessive amount of homework to finish and that it puts her in a situation where

she doesn’t know what to prioritize. Thus, this implies how excessive homework

affects senior high school students’ state of mind. Cape also responded that they

were bombarded by a multitude of requirements that needed to be submitted and

completed; some were being rushed just to be passed on time, making it hard for

her to handle her time. She uttered that “bombarded tanan nga students kay

damo-damo sang requirements nga i-pasa kag need himuon, videohon, kag ih

mga assignments nga need answeran kag i-pasa on time, tas ang iban rush pa

gid gina-pa-pasa, ti ako as a student, I don’t know how to, kay kis-a, budlay i-

handle ang oras kag kis-a hindi ko ma-manage ang time ko,” which means that

students were overloaded but were obliged to meet the deadlines, giving them a

tough time, as well as to manage their time effectively. This shows that some

senior high school are exceeding their limits to fulfill their obligations as students,

even if it affects their state.

Hurtada responded that the consequences of an excessive amount of

homework on students are depriving them of relaxation at home; instead of being

able to rest, they spend their time doing homework, making them stay up late at

night or, in some cases, not getting any sleep at all. He said that “ma-i-stress

sila gina-spend pa nila ang ila nga time sa paghimo sang homework nya, kis-a

maabutan sila sang kaagahon kag kis-a gani way na sila tulog ang iban kay gi-

tambakan sila sang ila nga homework,” which means that too much homework is

overwhelming for them and it is too challenging since it affects how they function

properly, especially in class as their minds were being hazy and it was too

difficult to focus. This implies that some senior high school students experience

hardships due to the severe consequences of the excessive amount of

homework. Hurtada also responded that it leads to sleep deprivation, stress

eating, and a loss of focus. He said that “parehas dati, damo-damo ang activities,

there was a massive piled workload that made him not to sleep causing stress

that led him to engage his self in stress-eating and by that he gained weight, and

he also loss focus since even if though his body is awake his mind is asleep due

to insufficient amount of sleep. This implies that excessive workload deprived

some senior high school students of the right amount of sleep and relaxation.

Puedan responded that she experienced a breakdown because of

numerous workloads. It is supported by her statement that “kapag damo-damo

matapos ko ba ni o amo na,” which means that too much homework overwhelms

her to the point that it disrupts her state of mind, where she overthinks whether

she will be able to finish the given tasks or not. This implies that some senior

high school students are greatly affected by excessive workloads that cause

breakdowns and waffle their minds.

Elizaga responded that the piled-up workload from school doesn’t really

have a consequence. It is supported by his response that “Uhmm, for me, nang

wala man siya consequence gid pero anang ano by having ano abi a lot of

sa inyo nga previous lessons,” which means that despite the amount of

schoolwork given, it still had a positive impact since it developed one’s mind and

behavior such as promoting perseverance, discipline, problem-solving, and

Region XII

City of Koronadal

critical thinking. He also stated that “mas ma recall nyo mga lessons mo para sa

upcoming mo nga summative or inyo nga upcoming exams, so for me, wala gid

siya consequence cuz maka-benefit ka gid,” which clearly shows that homework

is the root for a benefit due to how it makes students be able to review and recall

their previous discussion that gave them an advance insight and preparation for

the upcoming summative test and exam, and it fosters a sense of resilience and

adaptability. This shows that even though there are countless negatives

associated with too much homework and it can be overwhelming at times, it still

provides advantages, especially personal development and growth, to some

senior high school students.

Sumadic responded that having a lot of assignments is too consuming and

leaves less time to do household chores, which should ideally be balanced. It is

supported by her remark that "ang impact sakon sang pagdamo assignments

on siguro ara lang ta sa kwarto gahimo sang project," which means that it is

important for her to have a balance between studying and taking chores at home;

perhaps it gives her a new learning experience, but she is still spending most of

her time in her room, working on the tasks that were given, and it create a sense

of isolation and detachment to our dearest in life neglecting the harmonious

environment. This shows that some senior high school students’ daily tasks at

home were affected as it struck a balance between academic pursuits and

responsibilities at home, and some prefer balancing their workload at home and

at school.

deadlines are always
on Fridays. When the
workload piles up, it
can be really stressful.
Table 2 shows the effects of excessive homework on senior high school

students’ mental health and well-being. Based on the table, it had interrelated

responses: some have overwhelming difficulty, stress, anxiety, depression, lack

of clarity, weight gain, sleep disruption, responsibility, time management, difficulty

processing, fear of failure, sleep deprivation, physical ailment, difficulty

prioritizing, breakdowns, mental health monitoring, anxiety, procrastination

avoidance, balance, mental health prioritization, and stress on the students’

mental health and well-being. Cape responded that she experienced a random

breakdown due to the repressive tension of being obliged to pass the given

schoolwork. She stated that “may ara sang times nga ano, random nights mag

which means that there was an absence of clarity as she was muddled due to an

enormous amount of homework.

Hustrada said that an extreme amount of workload impacted him both

negatively and positively. He said that “nang wala nako sang sakto nga pag-isip

City of Koronadal

which means that excessive homework negatively affects his clarity of thought

and also leads to stress-eating that made him gain weight and disturbed his

sleep schedule. On the other hand, he expressed that “tapos in a good way

sang time kag dapat maging ano… maging responsible kag indi mag-

procrastinate.” which means that it teaches him to be responsible and manage

his time effectively, which is necessary to avoid procrastination.

Puedan responded that she is having a breakdown due to the difficulty of

processing and ends up exerting pressure on herself because she is afraid to fail.

It is supported by her statement that “ang impact sang too much homework sa

nabudlayan ko mag-process pero at the end man gihapon if nahadlok man ko

ma-failure, gina-force ko gid ang utok ko nga tapuson tanan,” which means that

she goes beyond her limit as she multi-tasking and forcing herself to pass on

time her responsibility at school neglecting her mental health. She also said that

“physically, minsan nag-ano… nakulang nagid ko sa tulog, way nagid kis-a tulog

kag kis-a nang gasakit nagid ko,” which means that numerous schoolwork

causes her physical ailment due to an exhausted body and inadequate amount of

sleep.

Elizaga responded that when there is too much schoolwork assigned, it

becomes difficult to monitor and prioritize one’s mental health. It is supported by

his statement that “uhmm, talagsa abi ng ano, nang kunyare ng ano… like too

much nagid ang schoolworks na gina-panghatag paminsan indi monagid

mabantayan ang mental health mo nang may time… time to time gid magka-

breakdown kagid,” which means that breakdowns may occur from time to time

because of excessive homework that makes someone neglect mental health. He

suggested an alternative solution for this: “pero ang kinahanglan mo lang man

nga may mag-check-up man sa imo nga kung okay ka pa or hindi,” which means

that regardless of what you’ve been through or are currently experiencing, you

just need to have someone by your side checking up on you whether you are

barely living or not. He also said that “uhmm… mas maka-feel ko sang anxious

cuz gina-alala ko gid tanan nga deadline sang works ko and kailangan ko…

kailangan ko gid mag-submit on time cuz nang budlay-budlay abi pag sabay-

sabay tanan,” which means that he is feeling anxious because he constantly

worries about the assignments that should be submitted on time.

On the other hand, Sumadic responded that the main reason there are

mental issues is because of procrastination. She said that “for me, abi di gid sya

health issues about sa assignment is procrastinate, so gina-less ko ang paghimo

gid ang mental health,” which means that she minimize the tendency to

procrastinate so that it will not lessen her time in doing schoolwork that may

possibly result to negativity, and that’s why she always balance everything and

prioritize her mental health. She also said that “yes, may ara nga time lalo na

pag gina-tambakan kami nga… tapos… ang every ano nalang every Friday man

ang aton deadline so pag matambakan gid ma stressed out kagid.” which means

that there were still times that she felt overwhelmed by the enormous amount of

homework that was piled out there, making it stressful for her. This proves that

excessive academic demands heavily affected some senior high school students’

mental health and well-being through instigating hardship, tension, anxiety,

depression, absence of clarity, weight gain, sleep disturbances, insufficient

amount of sleep, responsibility, time management, difficulty in processing, fear of

failure, sleep deprivation, physical ailment, difficulty of prioritizing, breakdowns,

needs of mental health monitoring, anxiety, procrastination avoidance, balance,

stress accumulation, and mental health prioritization.

Table 3 presents the shared experiences regarding the impact of

excessive homework on their family time as senior high school students. Based

on the table, it shows that while some students struggle to find a balance

between academic commitments and family interactions, others make conscious

efforts to allocate time for both. The experiences shared imply that excessive

homework can lead to sacrifices in terms of missed family events, limited

bonding opportunities, and increased academic pressure. However, some

students strive to maintain communication, set goals, and prioritize their well-

being by managing their time effectively.

schoolworks,” which means that there are instances when she can't join family

affairs or events because she needs to prioritize her schoolwork. In addition, she

said that “gina-make-sure ko nga everynight or every magkaon kami upod

gyapon kami tanan, tapos kis-a gina-una ko man, kis-a gina-una ko ang

schoolworks ko bisan budlay, ginapulawan ko gid sya, bisan budlay ginapulawan

ko gid sya para… at ano nang makaupod gyapon ko sa ila,” which means that

she still emphasized the importance of still spending time with her family every

night or during mealtime. She acknowledged that balancing her schoolwork and

family time may be challenging, but she makes an effort to complete her

assignments, even if it requires extra effort, to ensure she can still be with her

family.

Hurtada responded that he has no time to bond with his family and isn’t

able to do their house chores. Hurtada said that “wala nako sang time sa ano…

makipag-bonding sa family, way na ako time makipagsturya, pirmi-pirmi nalang

sa tubang sa notebook, sa activity, sa assignments, sa homeworks,” which

means that he lacks time for bonding with his family due to the overwhelming

workload of assignments and homework. Another statement of him says that

“gina-ano ko nalang, gina-explain ko nalang sa ila nga amo ni may ara ko sing

assignments, diko makabulig anay, diko danay maka-bonding sa ila, diko

makasabay kaon, hindi ko makagawas anay sa kwarto kay ga-focus ko anay sa

assignments or sa activity amo na,” which means that he explain his situation to

his family how engrossed he is in his notebook, activities, and homework, leaving

him with no time to contribute to household chores or engage in conversations

with his family. This indicates that the excessive workload negatively impacts his

ability to interact and connect with his family members.

Puedan responded that her parents are okay if she doesn’t bond too much

with them as long as she revolves around her studies. It is backed up by what

she said: “okay lang sa parents ko if hindi ko ka bond too much sa ila as long na

about gid sa school,” which means that her parents are understanding if she

doesn't bond extensively with them during family time, as long as it is about her

studies. It implies that her parents prioritize her academic focus and encourage

her to concentrate on her education. Puedan also mentioned the importance of

setting goals for herself and her family, even when faced with difficulties,

highlighting a goal-oriented mindset. It is supported by what she has said; it

states that “okay lang sa parents ko if hindi ko ka bond too much sa ila as long

na about gid sa school.”

Elizaga responded that he couldn't attend many family gatherings due to

their own practice sessions, upcoming tests, and lessons that required extensive

studying, limiting his ability to bond with his family. He said that “damo kami

mapa-summative or long quiz, kis-a mga teacher nang mahubsan gid ko sina

schoolwork and academic commitments result in limited time spent with his

family. However, he makes an effort to maintain communication by checking on

his family and sharing his daily experiences, signifying his commitment to staying

connected despite the challenges. It is supported by his statement, which says

that “by ano lang, kinakamusta sila from time to time and make sure nga

school, and other things,” which means that she maintains balance among her

time for family, friends, school, and other activities. Lastly, she said that “for me,

time… halimbawa sa aga ngana 9 to 12 homeworks tapos 1 to 4 watch tv with

families and then after namon balik naman sa schoolworks, pero sa time ngani

na matapos ko gid abi ang schoolworks ko tapos may family time,” which means

that she follows a structured schedule, completing her homework during specific

hours and then enjoying TV time with her family. By prioritizing and managing her

time effectively, she ensures that she completes her schoolwork before engaging

in family activities. It illustrates the impact of excessive homework on senior high

school students' family time. Some students struggle to balance their academic

commitments and family interactions, leading to missed family events, limited

students make conscious efforts to allocate time for both their studies and family,

emphasizing the importance of maintaining communication, setting goals, and

managing their time effectively. These narratives highlight the challenges faced

connections with their families, showcasing the need for a balanced approach to

prioritize both aspects of their lives.
