Who is the Dog’s Master?

(Learning Focus: Emphasizing the Importance of Adjectives in our Writings)

Miss White was strolling in the market while keeping an eye out for some
luscious fruits. She noticed some succulent apples lying in a heap at a stall and
walked towards the fruit vendor’s shop. While purchasing the juicy apples, she
heard a whining sound. She turned around and there sat a pup, looking at her
unhappily.

“What an adorable puppy! Is it yours?” Miss White asked the fruit vendor. “No,
Ma’am,” the vendor replied in a puzzled manner.

“It has worn a collar. It must belong to someone. Maybe one of your customers
forgot it here. I will put in an advertisement in the newspaper so that the person
who has lost this (1)________________ puppy will come forward and take
it back home,” said Miss White excitedly.

Then she made her way to the newspaper office and put in an advertisement that
read like this: ‘Have you lost your puppy? If you have, please come to collect it at
22 Broad Street on Saturday evening.’
Till Saturday arrived, Miss White had a marvellous time with the

(2)________________ puppy. She almost felt sorry to say goodbye to it.

That evening, when Miss White got dressed and sat in her hall with the playful

puppy, she heard the doorbell ring. That must be the owner! She opened the door

with a smile on her face. But her smile slowly disappeared. In front of her, stood

a huge crowd. There were boisterous boys, gorgeous girls, muscular men and

winsome women. Miss White was surprised! She then remembered that she had

forgotten to give some details about the puppy in her advertisement. She

mentally counted the number of people as she stood at her door. There were two

hundred and thirty-six people!

“I’ve come for my puppy,” shouted 236 voices.

“But I found only one puppy,” replied Miss White in a nervous voice.

“Describe it!” demanded 236 voices.

“It is a snow-white puppy,” said Miss White and 78 people made their way home as

they had lost a chocolate-brown puppy. This left 158 people still waiting at poor

Miss White’s doorstep.

“It is a blue-eyed puppy,” declared Miss White and 59 people slowly walked away
from the crowd. You see, they had lost a brown-eyed puppy. This left 99 people
waiting for their puppy to be returned to them.

“We have all lost a blue-eyed puppy. Now tell us something more about it. Please
tell us something more!” chanted 99 voices.

“It is a short, curly-tailed puppy,” explained Miss White and 47 people shook
their heads sadly. Their dogs had been tall and straight-tailed. This left 52
people still waiting.

“This puppy has floppy ears,” said Miss White loudly. 38 people had tears in their
eyes. They turned around and left for their homes. 14 people waited there to
know whose puppy it really was.

“The puppy has a black wet nose,” described Miss White.

“My puppy has a black wet nose too,” yelled all 14 voices.

“The puppy also has some (3)________________ spots on its back,” said
Miss White thoughtfully and 12 people left the doorstep of 22 Broad Street. Now,
2 people waited for the puppy to be returned to its rightful owner.
“The puppy also has a (4)________________ mark on its right paw,” said
Miss White. One man shook Miss White’s hand and slowly walked away. The woman
looked (5)________________ when she was finally reunited with her
charming puppy. She thanked Miss White for saving Joy.

Miss White closed the (6)________________ door and got into her
(7)________________ bed. She decided that she would go to the animal
shelter the next day and bring home an energetic, jolly dog for herself.
