Lesson2 Cellular Structures and Functions
Lesson2 Cellular Structures and Functions
FUNCTIONS
LEARNING TARGETS
• I can compare prokaryotic and
eukaryotic cells.
• I can discuss the main parts and
organelles of the cell.
• I can explain different cell functions.
• I can explain transport mechanisms in
cells.
A Review of Cell Structure
CELL
• Is the structural and functional units of
life.
• It vary greatly in size and complexity
• Share common component, genetic
information in the form of DNA
PROKARYOTIC CELLS
Cell Membrane (Plasma Membrane)
• double-layered structure of primarily lipids and proteins that
surrounds its outer surface;
Cytoplasm
• the inner contents of the cell between the nucleus and the
plasma membrane;
Organelles
• structures in the cell that perform specific functions
• “before nucleus”
• Include
eubacteria and
cyanobacteria;
domain Archaea
EUKARYOTIC CELLS
EUKARYOTIC CELLS
• “true nucleus,” because they contain a
membrane-enclosed nucleus and many
organelles.
• Eukaryotes also include fungi and single- celled
organisms called protists, which include most
algae.
PLASMA MEMBRANE
Plasma Membrane
• is a fluid, highly dynamic, complex
double-layered barrier composed of
lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates
• Performs essential roles in cell adhesion,
cell-to-cell communication and cell shape
• Selectively permeable barrier
Cytosol
• nutrient-rich, gel-like fluid, and many
organelles. The cytoplasm of prokaryotes
also contains cytosol, but few organelles.

CELL MEMBRANE (TRANSPORT)
• ALL cells have a cell membrane made of
proteins and lipids.
CELL MEMBRANE (TRANSPORT)
• SOME cells have cell membranes and cell
walls.
• Plant cells have a cell
wall made of cellulose
– that cellulose is fiber
in our diet.
