Applications

Applications
The Cargo Range of forklift trucks are the best solution to a wide range of material
handling needs.
Different to the IC truck sector, electric trucks are mainly for internal use and there-
fore dimensions are an important issue. Thus, electric trucks always have to cope
with high demands of manoeuvrability performances and small dimensions.
Together with the standard configuration it is possible to customize our trucks
with any solution that would better match the customer’s need. Please always
contact our “special trucks” department for better details and clarification at:
specialrequest@cesab.it
Typical industry segments are:

- Machinery and heavy equipment industry

- Food and beverage production, wholesale and retail
- General and cold-store warehousing
- Electronic equipment industry
- Chemical industry
- Textile industry

Applications

Food and beverage

Emission free trucks are perfect for food industries
and all those sectors that demands high standards
of hygiene. Different to our main competitors, our
trucks feature oil-immersed disk brakes: this kind
of brakes has no material consumption which leads
to a pollution free solution.

Further more, no marking tyres are available as

option to better preserve the hygiene conditions.
Along with normal applications there are several
special uses of our truck. Thanks to special equip-
ments they can fit any requirement.

The picture shows a push-pull; this equipment can

be use to stack sacks that don’t require pallets to be
stored, or load truck in the “second” row without
having to drive around the truck.

This picture shows a typical application in the bev-

erage/beer industry where it’s common to handle
more than one pallets at the time.

12 Product guide – Cargo E4 series

Applications

Cold-store warehousing
Our standard truck is build to resist to low tempera-
tures up to -20° (non permanent working: 30 min
every hour). Upon special request is possible to
order a -30° protection (non permanent working:
30 min every hour).
Different types of cabins can be fitted with heating
system (see dedicated chapter for more details) to
have the best possible working environment.

Paper and textile industry

The robustness and durability of our truck per-
fectly match the requirements of this sector. Our
trucks have an IP20 standard protection. As special

Applications

Among the different equipment that can be used

in this sector, the paper rolls clamp is one of the
most common. Available in different size, it can be
adapted to any need.

Chemical industry and corrosive environments

It is also possible to have a special protection with galvanized parts against particu-
larly aggressive external agents. This transformation is very common especially
among fish farms, saltworks and all those environments that deal with corrosive
agents. Due to the different types of environments, to have a specific modification,
please contact our specialists that would advise you with the best possible solu-
tion.

Machinery and heavy equipment industry

With rated capacities up to 2 tons and a steady con-
trol on ramp, the E4 series can easily operate in the
heavy equipment industries as well.
On our truck is available the “Active STOP”. The
Active STOP is a special feature of the BT trucks
that would mechanically block the front wheels.
This option grants a secure and steady working on
ramps and slopes. It’s not anymore necessary to use
the brake pedal to safely handle any type load.

14 Product guide – Cargo E4 series

Applications

In this segment this kind of clamps are very common

especially while handling house hold appliance
such as refrigerators, washing machine, laundry
machine, etc. The free-lift mast, with the free-lift
cylinders positioned on the side, offers great visibil-
ity and a safer control of the load.

EX proof modification
To work in explosive environments it’s possible to
modify the truck with EX-proof protection

Product guide – Cargo E4 series 15

Applications

General warehousing
The E4 series can combine the capability to turn in
confined spaces with high speed and acceleration.
Our truck is the best answer to any customer who
needs a truck for both internal warehousing and
external use. The high lifting speed (up to 0.60 m/
s) allows the operator to fast operate on tall ware-
houses with mast height up to 8 meters (always
check for lateral stability and rated capacity with
our department).

The spacious legs’ compartment (430 mm) gives

great comfort during the driving and the low step
(550 mm) eases all ingress and egress operations.
2 mm

16 Product guide – Cargo E4 series

Applications

For tight warehouse solutions it’s available a drive-

in overhead guard, that would help the truck to oper-
ate in very narrow storage units (for the different
available measures check our price list or contact
the Special Truck department).

Battery rollout, if the customer needs longer shift

where a single battery is not enough, we offer as
special request the lateral extraction. Available with
either rollers or sliders it grants non-stop shifts for a
24/7 productivity. This solution simplifies the oper-
ation of extracting the battery not only with specific
tools but also with conventional cranes.

OSC – Operator Smart Control

The new multifunction dashboard and the all new graphic display (2.7 inches) allow
the operator to customize the truck to accommodate any specific need. The large
OLED (Organic Light Emission Display) display is the dialog window between
the operator and the machine. For a better reading of the display, many functions
will be shown only if necessary. For example: the steering angle (viewable in two
different settings, see paragraph below for more details) will be shown when the
truck’s speed is lower than 3.0 km/h; the speed value will disappear when the truck
is standing still. The display will brighten according to the external light.

The new dashboard will have three main levels of access to the main function of
the truck. Any level has its own password that offers a specific variety of option to
modify the performance and configuration of the truck.
• Level 1: accessible only by factory.
• Level 2: only service specialists or fleet managers will have access to this
level. Thanks to this new dash board service personnel won’t have to use the
old console anymore. All the parameters will be selectable via dash-board but
they can’t be modified and the access is granted by two passwords.
• Level 3: is what will be seen and modified by the end user. This level will al-
low the operator to access to three main menus.

20 Product guide – Cargo E4 series

Sales arguments

The first display that will appear will have general information such as: battery
status, drive programs (L-P-H and Turtle), rear wheels position, time and hour
meter. From the first screen you can access the hour-meter and trip-meter displays
by pressing the left/right arrows. The hour meter will display all the different type
of counting hours; the trip meter is manageable by the operator. It can be reset any
time to keep track of the amount of hours that are necessary for a specific job or
other needs.

You’ll be able to access the three menus of this level pressing the OK button:

• Clock menu; you can set time and date.

• Alarm menu; you can set an alarm as a reminder for

any need. It will alert the driver with both a visual
and audio warning.

• Display mode settings. This menu has three other

options:
- Hour meter settings: none, key, traction and
working. The working hour calculates both the
traction and the pump time.
- Language: German, Spanish, French, Italian and English.
- Steering visualization; linear or radial.

Product guide – Cargo E4 series 21

Sales arguments

The OUT button will take you to the previous

menu. The new OSC (Operator Smart Control),
along with the various settings, offers many warn-
ing signals that constantly keep the driver informed
on the status of the truck. For example, if the Park-
ing Brake is activated a large icon will be displayed
on the monitor to warn the operator. Maintenance or system failure warnings are
displayed as well to have a constant overview of truck’s condition.
The new CAN System and the new OSC offer many features and benefits for both
end user and fleet manager. Among the most important is the CBM Counter Bal-
anced Management (see technical information).

22 Product guide – Cargo E4 series

Sales arguments

CBM Counter Balanced Management

CBM allows any client to manage a fleet as a single truck or a single truck as fleet.
Thanks to its options it is possible to adapt the truck to any need and manage it the
best possible way.
• Universal key: single key for all the trucks. It is no longer necessary to change
the whole key pad in case the main key is lost
• 40 different pin codes: limits the use of the truck only to designated people.
The pin codes are already set and associated to a designated profile.
• 5 profiles: allows the driver to adapt the performance of the truck to any driver
or application’s need (see M3 Performance section for more details).
• Rental expiration date warning: alerts the driver that the rental time is expir-
ing. A number of “extra” hours (10 h standard) can be determined before the
truck will undergo a significant reduction of performance for both traction and
lifting.
• Maintenance warning: alerts the driver that the maintenance interval is expir-
ing. As well for the service intervals, there is a settable amount of hours (100 h
standard) that can be set before the traction performance will be limited
• Battery Protection: performance reduction due to low battery level. When
the battery reaches a certain amount of discharge all the performance will be
reduced. It preserves battery’s life and capacity: this function has a tolerance of
10 minutes.

Sales arguments

Hand direction control

While a single drive pedal (accelerator)
regulates the speed, forward and reverse
travel is selected using the lever mounted
on the left of the steering column.
F-forward
N-neutral
R-reverse
The travel direction lever can be operated
with the truck in motion without any need
to release the accelerator; initially the truck
will decelerate, before stopping and then
restart in the opposite direction.
The distance between the pedals and their angle have been designed to reduce
fatigue to the minimum during long working cycles and help the operator to work
during daily operations with reduced effort.

Adjustable steering column

The steering wheel can be adjusted to the
operator’s needs with an inclination of 8°.
Its ergonomic shape ensures optimum cab
comfort. Manoeuvrability is facilitated by
the fully hydraulic power steering. The
steering wheel shape is designed to provide
the operator with maximum comfort while
operating the truck and to facilitate easy
opening of the battery cover.

Product guide – Cargo E4 series 25

Sales arguments

Truck access
The operator’s foot compartment is large and spacious (430 mm). A rubber floor
mat prevents slipping while getting on and off the truck. The floor height (550 mm)
provides very easy and comfortable access to the truck. The compartment gives the
operator the possibility to operate freely and comfortably, especially in frequent
‘on and off’ truck applications, reducing fatigue.
Access to the truck is possible from both sides to ensure maximum comfort and
efficiency when working with the truck.

Sales arguments

Load control
Too satisfy the most demanding customer BT offers
three different types of load controls: lever, finger-
tips or joystick.
For the old-style truck driver the BT hydraulic lever
system grants efficiency, easy of operation and the
well established BT quality.

The increased feeling and control of the new arm-

rest, the higher speed of actuation of any command
and the newest technology have created the answer
for the customer who wants to rely on new option of
our trucks. The choice between fingertips and joy-
stick customize the truck for each of our custom-
ers.

Maximum lowering speed of the forks is set by a

flow limiting valve (from VDI norm EN1726: max
lowering speed < 0.6 m/s).

Sales arguments

Rear steering wheels

This design ensures excellent manoeuvrability and is an important feature in this
range of trucks.
The “three wheel” configuration features twin wheels on the rear axle offering
maximum comfort and stability.

Regenerative braking and braking effect

As soon as the operator releases the accelerator pedal, the regenerative braking
system starts feeding current produced by the motors back to the battery.
When the accelerator pedal is released, the traction motors simultaneously and
automatically reduce the speed and stop the truck. This reduces to a minimum the
use and subsequent wear of the front brakes.

Sales arguments

BT Safetronix

Speed reduction when cornering

The truck’s speed is automatically reduced when it exceeds a certain angle. The
graph on the right illustrates the percentage of reduction related to the turning
radius. It is clear how the reduction is higher and quicker where the control while
cornering is needed more. Between 16° and 35° you have a reduction of 50%. This
feature is very important for both safety and productivity.

Braking system
• Active STOP: this new system will activate the mechanic brakes whenever
the truck stops. The activation time is approximately of 500 milliseconds. This
“time-gap” has been designed to stop promptly without a jerky movement. This
feature is very useful especially when handling pallets at increased heights and
when the operator will be driving on ramps or slopes, thanks to the mechanical
anti-roll back.

• Emergency stop: when activated the truck

quickly stops and all the electrical functions are
shut down. This operation should be carried out
only in the case of real necessity.

30 Product guide – Cargo E4 series

Sales arguments

• APB Automatic Parking Brake: the E4 Series

will no longer have the manual parking brake.
It will be automatically activated whenever the
operator will leave the truck. Thanks to this new
solution, there isn’t any lever in the way of the
driver while stepping on or off the truck. The
switch next to the emergency button offers the
operator another way to manually activate the parking brake.

Seated operator detection

The seat has a built-in switch to detect the pres-
ence of the seated operator. If the operator stands
up, whilethe truck is “ON” and operating, the power
supply of the traction is interrupted and the truck
remains in neutral.

Rear wheels position indicator

The rear wheel position indicator in the dashboard
continuously informs the operator about the current
position of the rear wheels.
This feature is particularly helpful when working in
confined areas as it can help reduce accidental dam-
age to products or injury to pedestrians, especially
when starting. The visualization is available in two
different ways: radial or linear.

Product guide – Cargo E4 series 31

Sales arguments

Low centre of gravity

The truck has a low centre of gravity (floor clearance m2 = 90 mm). The very low
battery placement between the rear and front axles offers high stability and, as a
result, enhanced truck safety even when driving at high speed.

Safety belt
The seat belt restrains the operator in case of truck
tip-over. The belt folding system is integrated in the
lateral seat carter. The ease of usage help the opera-
tor to use this important feature even in continuous
on and off from the truck.

Horn
The horn button is positioned under the steering wheel.
It can be easily reached for a safer working environ-
ment.

32 Product guide – Cargo E4 series

Sales arguments

Battery top cover

The battery cover is fitted with a gas spring to fa-
cilitate easy opening. The wide opening angle of the
battery cover simplifies battery replacement.
The lateral outlet ensures proper battery ventilation.
Important feature if the truck features a complete
cab to let the battery fumes outside the operator’s
cab.

Rear combination lights

All trucks have two stop and two reversing tail lights
as standard. All lights are recess mounted.
The standard light configuration increases driving
safety when operating in a pedestrian area.
The recessed placement protects the lights from dam-
age.

position.
It is therefore necessary to have an appropriate stowing area, to allow the loaded
truck to turn without any interference.
For 4-wheels forklift trucks, the following formula is used to calculate this area:

When b12 /2 > b13

Ast = Wa + √(l6 + x)2 + (b12
2
- b13)2 + a

When b12 /2 < b13

Ast = Wa + x + l6 + a

Where: Wa is the turning radius, x is the front overhang, l6 is the load depth, b12 the
load width, b13 the distance between the rotation centre and the centre of the front
axle; a is assumed as 200 mm as a safety margin.

Product guide – Cargo E4 series 41

Technical information

For 3-wheels forklift-trucks, the following formula should be used:

Ast = Wa + √(l6 + x)2 + (b12

2
)2 + a

Where: Wa is the turning radius, x is the front overhang, l6 is the load depth, b12 the
load width; a is assumed as 200 mm as a safety margin.

Technical information

AC power technology
All Cargo E series models feature AC power technology, which improves perform-
ance, adaptability and general driving functions.
Thanks to the simplicity of the electric motors with AC technology and the reduc-
tion of components due to the absence of carbon brushes and direction contacts,
maintenance and operating costs have been reduced.
This technology consist of an inverter (MOSFET), electronic device able to con-
vert direct current into alternating current.
The motor consist of a rotor (rotating part fixed to the main axle) on which are
present different magnetic poles of alternate polarity and a (Fixed) stator.
The polar expansions of the stator creates a rotating magnetic field that drags the
polar expansions of the rotor (Turning the motor). The frequency of rotation is in
link with the frequency of current.

Technical information

Ramp start
The AC technology allows a permanent torque control of the truck’s electric drive
unit. The truck can be controlled on ramps without using the brake pedal, and the
stop on ramp is guarantee by the APB Automatic Parking Brake.

Better performance
The AC technology improves performances, adaptability and facilitates any driv-
ing operation.
• Change of direction and braking effect are quicker and more prompt, control on
ramp safer.
• This technology offers a wide range of parameters that can be adjusted in order
to modify performance (acceleration, speed, regenerative braking).
• The high torque output as well as the high efficiency of the AC motor allowed
the designers to optimise the power of the drive units.

Technical information

CAN bus technology

CAN (Controller Area Network) is a serial network that was originally designed
for the automotive industry. Now it has also become a popular bus in industrial
automation as well as for other applications. This system is well suited for high-
speed applications using short messages. The CAN Bus technology, featured on all
electric CARGO Range, has allowed to obtain a digital data transmission between
all functions and controls of the forklift, creating an easier and safer communica-
tion among components. For example, this system allows to fit electronic Finger-
tips or Mini-joystick in the arm rest. CAN Bus technology is a very reliable system
in terms of safety on the messages transmission. This is one of the reasons why the
E-Series features this system.

Batteries and chargers

One of the decisive factors in the choice of battery is the specific truck application.
In the case of long cycle applications, an “L” version that can accomodate higher
capacity batteries is available. The batteries respect the DIN norms in terms of di-
mensions and weight. Also the battery compartment follows the DIN norms.
The charts below show the available batteries for the different trucks, the battery
compartment dimensions and the suggested charger for each battery.

Technical information

Electric motors

Traction
This range is equipped with two 6 kW (48 V) electric traction motors. This drive
system with AC Power provides a top travel speed without load of 16 km/h avail-
able only for 4 wheels (for safety reasons, the maximum speed of 3 wheels truck
is reduced).
Thanks to the electronic differential, the motors can counter-rotate. This feature
improves the manoeuvrability of the truck in terms of turning radius and stacking
aisle operation.

Counter-rotating front wheels

The wheel angle sensor (potentiometer), mounted on top of the steering unit, con-
trols the current fed to the two electric motors (electronic differential), enabling
counter-rotation of the front wheels in curves. Counter-rotation of the front wheels
enhances traction and manoeuvrability of the truck in confined spaces, allowing the
truck to turn around a rotating point located in the centre of the front axle (avail-
able for both, 3 and 4 wheeler). Through the rear wheel angle / position sensor the
traction motors always provide the right torque and maximize the truck manoeu-
vrability.
Between the two motors there is a valve that would help to unlock the negative
brakes in case of system failure.

Technical information

Lifting motor
The 12 kW lifting motor AC technology provides top performance and reliability,
ensuring a top lifting speed of 0.60 m/s.

Lifting motor Hydraulic pump

Hydraulic power steering

The fully hydraulic power steering is designed to
reduce the operator’s steering effort in any given
condition. The hydraulic steering cylinder works on
the rear wheels of the truck instead of using a chain.
This reduces wear and tear of components and the
need for maintenance. The power steering system is
engaged whenever the operator presses a pedal.

50 Product guide – Cargo E4 series

Technical information

Hydraulic power steering (4-wheel models)

The rear axel features one cylinder which drives the steering wheels movement,
controlled by the hydraulic steering valve.
On the 4-wheels the rear axel is assembled on elastic mountings to ensure maxi-
mum comfort.

Hydrostatic power steering (3-wheel models)

Also on the 3-wheel models the steering axle is controlled by the hydraulic steer-
ing valve. In this case the steering actuator consists of a hydraulic rack that rotates
directly the twin rear wheels. The two independent rear wheels can counter rotate
while turning; this can reduce the tyres wear during the steering manoeuvre with
the truck standing still.

Technical information

Tyres
The tyre choices are:
A. Superelastic (SE)
B. Non marking (SE-CU)
C. Cushion (CU)
D. Pneumatic (PN)

A B C D
The choice of tyre should be made against the specific needs of the operating en-
vironment.
• The superelastic tyres (standard on all models) are suitable for a mixed use,
both indoors and outdoors. They also come in a “non-marking” version for
specific floors and conditions (clean environments).
• The cushion tyres have a lower shoulder profile and are made from a harder
material compared to that used in superelastic tyres. This helps the truck
achieve a higher rated capacity, while it is particularly suited to operate in envi-
ronments with metal chips and shavings on the floor.
• Pneumatic tyres are mainly used outdoors and on uneven floors. These tyres
absorb shocks and provide more comfort to the operator, while reducing shock
exposure to truck components.

Technical information

Wet brakes
The oil immersed disc brakes and the negative brakes, are positioned in the gear
box of the transmission and therefore use the same oil. The new Active STOP
system will activate the mechanic brakes whenever the truck stops. This feature is
very useful during tough handling operations: ramp, slopes, high lifting manoeu-
vres etc.
This guarantees high reliability and low maintenance costs.

Oil immersed brakes offer the following advantages:

• Minimum maintenance
The brake discs are immersed in the oil of the transmission and therefore wear
is reduced to a minimum.
• Progressive braking
Thanks to the large contact surface between the brake discs.
• Reduced operating costs
As the ordinary maintenance cost represents about one third of the operating
cost of the truck, a decrease in maintenance requirements directly results in a
decrease of the overall operating costs of the truck. Wet brakes reduce mainte-
nance costs up to 35%.
• Improved safety on ramps
Work on ramp is a safety activity in any condition, thanks to the Active STOP
brake: truck stop immediately when the operator release the pedals.

Technical information

Mast
The mast is extremely robust and solid. The mast
profile is designed to offer a maximum degree of
visibility. The rigid sections on the sides increase
torsion rigidity. The sliding parts of the profile are
specially finished, so the tolerance will be main-
tained over time to reduce vibrations and energy
consumption.
The free-lift function has being realised by two lat-
erally placed cylinders which offer greater visibil-
ity. The free-lift cylinder has a damping system that
automatically slows down the lifting process at the
end of the free-lift stage.
Each stage of the mast is coupled with two sets of
bearings (roller and slide) to offer maximum stabil-
ity at any height.
The cylinders feature a safety valve that automati-
cally blocks the fork plate in case of hydraulic sys-
tem failure.
The advantages of this mast design are:
• Strength
• Good visibility
• High torsion resistance and bending rigidity

Product guide – Cargo E4 series 55

Technical information

Rigid sections
The rigid sections are designed with a “Double C” profile that increases the overall
rigidity and sturdiness of the mast. This reduces the torsion, especially at elevated
heights, giving the operator the chance to work safely in any condition.

Specially finished profile

The internal part of the inner mast profile is specially finished, reducing the gap
between components. This means wear on the surfaces of the mast rail is reduced
to a minimum.
Lifting is the most energy consuming part of forklift truck operations. To enable
low energy consumption, it is important that the rollers can move smoothly. If this
is not the case, the energy autonomy of the forklift truck can be significantly af-
fected.
