Chema Chema Fund
guidelines launch

GABORONE - The
Ministry of Entrepreneurship
will launch the Chema Chema
Fund guidelines this month,
says Citizen Entrepreneurial
Development Agency (CEDA),
Chief Executive Officer, Mr
Thabo Thamane.
Therefore he advised Batswana
to remain vigilant of fake
messages regarding the fund.
Briefing the media recently, Mr
Thamane said the ministry had
appointed both Local Enterprise
Authority (LEA) and CEDA as
the custodians of the fund.
Mr Thamane dismissed recent
information circulating on social
media about the launch of the
fund being on April 6, at CEDA.
He said currently they were
busy with preparations leading
to the unveiling of this fund
to Batswana, citing that the
ministry will communicate
when the programme will be
launched.
Mr Thamane urged the
nation to look out for proper
and truthful reporting on the
fund from government media,
ministry, CEDA or LEA to avoid
being scammed.
To this juncture, Mr Thamane
said there was no information
regarding eligibility criteria
and steps to access the fund as

National Statistical System and
the data statistics management
system face challenges related
to data availability, quality, and
utilisation.
This insight was shared by Dr
Burton Mguni, the statistician
general of Statistics Botswana
(SB), during the recent National
Dialogue on the Power of Data

Mr Thamane cautioned that
this sector has been having
challenges with access to funding
and any other intervention meant

assessments government took
initiative to set up the fund with
anticipation that in the medium
term the programme would
graduate beneficiaries from
being informal to becoming
formal and ultimately help
reduce unemployment.
Upon launching the fund, Mr
Thamane said there shall be a
formal comprehensive education
on the programme which would
spread nationwide at various
places including dikgotla and
councils.
Mr Thamane said the time
was now for Batswana to benefit
from the P500 million Chema
Chema Fund, therefore, urged
all belonging to the informal
sector to take time to decisively
work on their business ideas
and perfect them to stand a
chance to be funded through the

data, could provide opportunities
for prioritising investment in
the national data and statistical
system, embracing open data,
harnessing technology to enable
countries to strengthen evidence-
based policy making and

partnership for a number of years,

technical assistance to Botswana
on a number of areas, including

values and the national capacity
for environmental climate
change and agricultural data and
statistical development, through
the Data for Now Programme,
which was a joint partnership
initiative with the United Nations
Economic Condition for Africa.

initiative, he said it would help

for societal benefit. It will also
address data gaps on key SDGs
indicators for better reporting.
The meeting agreed on how
to strengthen coherence and
collaboration between the
national statistical system and the
United Nations system and other
development partners, as well
as the private sector and civil
society.
At the end of the dialogue,
stakeholders were also expected
to have discussed and agreed
on a two-year draft plan for
consolidating gains and possible
financial models for harnessing
the data dividend and building
structures for continuous and

Soldiers graduate from swimming course

SHASHE - Botswana Defence
Force (BDF) graduates from
a three-month combat basic
swimming course have been
implored to put their acquired
skills to good use.
Giving a keynote address at
the end of the course at Shashe
Dam recently, Commander of
2 Brigade, Brigadier Kagiso
Kgaswanyane said swimming
was not just a skill, but a crucial
aspect of the readiness and
preparedness of a soldier.
“In time of crisis or conflict,
the ability to navigate the
volatile, uncertain, complex
and ambiguous operational
environment may include water
obstacles, which can be the
difference between success and
failure, life and death,” said
Brigadier Kgaswanyane.
He pointed out that swimming
enhanced operational
effectiveness and ensured a
soldier’s ability to adapt to diverse
and challenging environments.
Brigadier Kgaswanyane
explained that swimming
embodied the principles of
adaptability and versatility, the
qualities that were essential for
success in the ever-changing
tactical landscape of modern
warfare.
“Just as we must adapt our
strategies and tactics to meet
evolving threats, swimming
requires us to adapt our
techniques and approaches based
on the conditions of the water and
the formations,” he added.
He said this adaptability not
only strengthened their physical
abilities but also sharpened
mental agility, preparing them
to face any challenge with
confidence and resolve.
Brigadier Kgaswanyane stated
that swimming served as a
powerful symbol of resilience in
the face of adversity.
“In the water, we are confronted
with a vast and sometimes
daunting expanse of situations,
testing our resolve and pushing us
and kick, we learn to conquer
our fears and doubts, emerging
stronger and more resilient than
before,” he said.
In the face of contemporary
health challenges such
as COVID-19, Brigadier
Kgaswanyane explained that
maintaining physical fitness
and overall well-being was very
paramount. “Swimming offers a
low-impact, fully-body workout
that provides cardiovascular
health, muscular strength,
and mental resilience. It is an
invaluable tool in our arsenal as
we strive to uphold our duty to
protect and serve,” said Brigadier
Kgaswanyane.
Giving a course overview,
Warrant Officer 1 (WO1), Molefe
Engineers Regiment, explained
that the main aim of the training
was to enhance soldiers to
operate in wetlands environment
and subsequently equipping them
with skills to navigate and plan
tasks on wetlands effectively.
He said the objective was to
train students to be able to cross
or swim a wetland gap of at least
100 metres unassisted, be able
to retrieve objects of equipment
under water and perform riverine
operation drills as well as to have
knowledge of wet gap crossing
techniques.
The training saw 33 graduates,
amongst them 17 females and
16 males, started at Donga BDF
camp swimming pool and it was
shifted to Shashe dam in the last

calling for the council to drill
boreholes in government schools’
premises in the district as a way
of reducing costs.
The motion was tabled by
Gabane North East councillor,
Mr Ofentse Mareme who argued
that his proposal was in response
to the high water bills that the
council had been incurring.
Presenting the motion recently,
Mr Mareme argued that if the
motion was approved, the funds
saved from the water bills could
be used for other development
projects.
He noted that the council spent
a significant amount of money
each month on water bills, and
that this money could be spent
elsewhere.
“In November and December
last year, three schools namely,
Mogoditshane, Pule
Moamogwe primary schools had
bills amounting to over P100 000
and
each with Mogoditshane primary
schools with the highest bill of
over P125 000,” he said.
He also noted that several
other schools such as Dihutso,
Mokolodi, Ramaphatle,
Nkoyaphiri and Seremane in the
same months had bills of over
P20 000.
Mr Mareme stated that there
was no legislation that prevented
the council from drilling
boreholes as long as the necessary
water rights were obtained from
the Department of Water Affairs.
However, he emphasised that
it was important to ensure that
certain safety measures were put
in place to protect school children
from potential contamination.
He also suggested that the
borehole water pipes could be
pipes, with borehole water used
for toilets and potable water used
for drinking and cooking.
In addition to the potential
cost savings, Mr Mareme also
highlighted the environmental
benefits of the initiative.
He stated that if the plan was
approved, the schools could
become greener, with gardens
and lawns maintained using the
water from the boreholes.
Mr Mareme also suggested that
a quality assurance manager or
officer should be hired to ensure
that the water was safe for the
intended uses.

researchers are working on a
project that could redefine the
coal industry landscape and is
funded by Botswana Digital and
Innovation Hub to the tune of
P500 000.
Beneficiation of Botswana coal
for the metallurgical industry, is
the name of the project which it
is hoped, would diversify the use
of coal to higher value use, than
predominantly thermal coal.
Through the project, which
started in 2021, the university
is experimenting avenues of
converting locally sourced
coal, into metallurgical value.
Presently, the university is
exploring transforming Botswana
coal to a special type called
coking coal, through a systematic
blending of coal sourced locally
with one mined in Zimbabwe.

potential to set Botswana apart in
construction and manufacturing.
Mr Bulayani reiterated that
the country does not have any
iron or steel source, hence much
dependence on imports since
there was nowhere in Botswana
iron was being processed.
He pointed to statistics that
indicated that in 2022, Botswana
imported 160 000 tons of steel
and steel products worth P3.2
billion.

attempts to adequately service
the local market were through
a few companies where by-
products or scrap materials
were used to improve some
concentrates.
Mr Bulayani said to produce
iron or steel, a certain grade of
iron ore which had at least 80
per cent of iron was needed in
direct production of steel and
iron, citing a shortage of such
quality in Africa and beyond.
He said the situation was
instigated by the fact that the
depletion of high-grade iron was
at its peak since infrastructure
development depended on steel
and iron, adding that steel and
iron remain fundamental in
every construction site.
For his prototype, Mr
Bulayani said he used raw
iron ore from one indigenous
mine to concentrate the iron,
mentioning that he pulverized
it into laboratory size and it
gave him a 66 per cent quality
which was still not sufficient
to be processed into anything
valuable, be it steel or iron.
He said through a reduction
roasting process he took
advantage of abundant coal from
Morupule Coal Mine which at
present does not have sufficient
market and has never been used
for metallurgical purposes, but
mostly for power generation.
Mr Bulayani dubbed his project
“The Future of Botswana”,
because of its simplicity to
attain and mentioned that he has
managed to get results from his
first trial through conversion
of waste into a more magnetic
concrete by removing impurities
and deriving purpose from the
used coal.
He said with availability of
212 billion metric tons of non-
coking coal from Mmamabula,
Masama and Morupule mines,
Botswana only used less than
30 per cent of its coal through
electricity generation.
Mr Bulayani said his project
had potential to create jobs.
He said quite a large number of
Batswana would be hired by this
project, mentioning that it was
not costly to set up either as the
iron ore and coal were equally
available and underutilized,
adding that the country had
about 2 billion metrics tons of
iron ore.
Mr Bulayani said the processes
adopted were energy efficient,
cost effective and not too
technical, saying now with the
availability of iron concentrate,
steel manufacturing plants could
take effect locally.
He said this was a continuous
project which he shall adopt into
his PhD studies where his aim
will be to produce steel using
green technology, citing that
Botswana was richly blessed
with abundant sunlight which
put the country in good stead to
make green steel.
Mr Bulayani said the process
demanded that he captured
sunlight and produce hydrogen
from electrolysis, and pump it
into the iron concentrate and
have green steel.
He said already trial runs
have been completed and await
funding to be developed into
commercialization stage, adding
that universities were better
positioned to uptake national
research and innovate products
that would curb challenges in
the society.
Mr Bulayani said his
project has been successful
elsewhere around the globe,
citing that Zimbabwe, India and
Mozambique have successfully
managed to set up iron and
steel plants using low grade raw
materials. However, Botswana
stood at a better position given
the quality of iron ore and coal
found locally.
He said support structures
towards research and innovation
at university level should be well
defined and adequately budgeted
for, with maximum monitoring
and supervision to ensure that
projects were completed to
commercialisation stage.
Mr Bulayani made a
call to the industry to find
investment opportunities within
universities, mentioning that
there were diverse projects that
were already at a trial phase
within campus which needed
funding to kick start.
He appreciated efforts done
by BIUST in setting up a legal
office that focused on initiating
processes towards patenting
products being developed
within the university, citing that
already the respective office
has registered two patents since

BIUST pyrolysis project underway

The growing high demand for
energy and energy sources are
always blamed on climate change.
Therefore researchers across
the globe are scratching their
heads to find greener and
sustainable solutions.

embarked on a pyrolysis project
as a way of solving the energy
problem.
A researcher at the chemicals
materials and metallurgical
engineering department, Dr
Daniel Botha, and a teaching
instructor at BIUST in the
same department, Mr Thapelo
Shomana, described pyrolysis,
which is the heating of carbon-
based substances, for instance
biomass in the absence of oxygen,
as a clean process.
They said pyrolysis was a clean
process with no emissions as all
the product and by-product were
beneficial and useful.
This includes solid products
(char), liquid fuel and non-
condensable gases (syngas). The
two scholars cited that, from
biomass pyrolysis, the liquids
were oil and pyroligneous acid
and those were liquid products
used in energy and agricultural
applications respectively.
According to them while
pyroligneous acid was used as
organic pesticides, herbicides and
fertilizer, the oil could be used
for heating purposes or redefined
into diesel equivalent-fuel.
The two experts said the gas
was basically a clean burning
fuel.
They said in pyrolysis the type
of biomass was critical, citing
that it should be a high volatile
content material.
“The pyrolysis of coal produces
a high amount of char in major
applications, owing to high fixed
carbon and gas contents and they
have only been able to produce
yields of 80 per cent, 20 per cent
and 20 percent char, oil and gas
respectively.”
The two scientists however said
further research activities were
planned to improve these yields
by co-pyrolysis, catalysis, plant
parameters enhancement and
heating process re-design among
other options.
They stated that work was in
progress as currently yield for
chicken litter pyrolysis was 40
per cent liquid, about 20 per cent
gas and 40 per cent biochar.
Mr Shomana said through the
chicken litter pyrolysis research
activities, they managed to
build a bigger plant of 2 tons
per day, and it was proving to
be a commercially viable plant,
thanks to Botswana Digital and
Innovation Hub funding.
“With chicken litter, other than
oil, there was char used as soil
enhancer and it was sold to arable
farmers to help in the retention
of valuable soil nutrients and
enable soil to be a suitable habitat
for microorganisms,” said Mr
Shomana adding that trials in the
lab had proved so.
He said with waste tires, they
had produced crude oil in the
past, but lacked financial muscle
to continue it.
“It may sound very easy but it is
complex, it depends on the huge
amount of data we get or gather
from trials,” he said. “We come a
long way, we still have a long way
to go.”
With process improvements
mechanisms outlined above,
he said their yields could be
improved. Mr Shomana said
maximization of yield needed a
lot of analysis equipment and lack
of such equipment was a major
bottleneck.
In pyrolysis- Morula nut
shells, he said they got up to 60
percent of oil yield while old tires
produced 50 per cent liquid , 30
per cent gas and 20 per cent char
and steel.
On co-pyrolysis, Dr Botha said
they mix coal with other products
like bio mass and various products
to optimize the liquid yield.
“We have done cow dung so far
and we want to expand to other
materials such as chicken wastes,
municipal waste, and abattoir
waste. There are still a lot of
things we still have to explore.”
He also said cow dung has

cashes in on
revival of Hanfu
HANGZHOU - Standing
in front of a horse-face skirt
showcased in a garment factory,
Liu Wenyue, 24, meticulously
elaborated on the inspiration
she drew from when designing
it.
“I drew inspiration from the
shell carving process used to
create mother-of-pearl lacquer,
an intangible cultural heritage
in China.
I chose the chromatic silver
thread and images from
traditional Chinese paintings,
birds, flowers, hills and rocks,
as the motifs.
I also added window-frame
patterns on the edge to give the
entire piece the appearance of
lacquerware,” said Liu.
“It is the best-selling piece in
our store, with 20 000 pieces
sold so far,” said Liu, a young
Hanfu designer who majored
in pre-school education and
products,” Liu said, adding a
horse-face skirt is very versatile,
as it could be matched with tops
and fits all age groups.
Liu’s passion for Hanfu
started at college when she was
enthralled by the traditional
attire but could barely afford
the costumes herself.

type of Hanfu that features a

sides, which originated in the
Song Dynasty (960-1279) and
prevailed in the Ming and Qing
Dynasties.
The traditional Hanfu robe
embellished with intricate
embroidery can be traced back
to the Han Dynasty (202 B.C.-
A.D. 220).
Hanfu has evolved throughout
history, resulting in a diverse
array of designs seen in
different Chinese cities today.

future generations, Liu argued.
“I hope that the Hanfu pieces

Tennis Association (BTA)
president Oaitse Thipe said the
tournament was a benefit to the
country’s sport tourism since
the players, officials, coaches
and their families had used the
Botswana airlines to come to
Gaborone, and were lodging in
local hotels.
He said 90 players and their
officials were in Botswana to
compete in a tournament that
started on Monday and would
end on Saturday.

were from Southern African

United States, and Europe,

160 000 residents, football has

lives through the beautiful game.
“In the next decade, I will
try my best to keep chasing my
dream of establishing a football
club as great as Real Madrid on
the Loess Plateau,” said 45-year-
old Ding.
Recalling their trip to Germany
in March 2014, Ding said: That
was the first time my players
went aboard.
We all knew that Germany is a
powerhouse in the football world,
so everyone in my team cherished
that chance.”
For Zhou Xu, now a Chang’an
University student, those days
in Germany are etched in his
memory.
“One day, when I practiced on
the stairs of a stadium, a German
coach told me that one German
international had practiced at the
exact same point when he was a
kid.
Although I didn’t know many
football stars at that time, I
trained harder to become an
outstanding footballer in the
future,” Zhou recalled.
Zhou’s teammate Yao Jie was
very impressed while watching
Wolfsburg’s first team training
session.
“They had amazing skills
and fantastic tactics. When we
returned to our hometown, we
all had the determination to
become good footballers and
bring Zhidan more trophies and
glories,” Yao said.
This transformative experience
abroad reshaped Ding’s vision.
Rather than solely focusing on
grooming professional players,
he sought to embed football into
the lifestyle of Zhidan’s youth.
“I want to improve the

Summers 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 in a game played at the Notwane
Courts on Monday.
Molefe, who seemed to enjoy the homeground advantage,
managed to handle his opponent’s fast ball, exposing his
weaknesses and attacking the net.
Molefe said in a post match interview that he did well in the first set
while Summers came with guns blazing in the second set.
He said he enjoyed playing the third set, which he managed to win
though his opponent played fast balls.
His game plan, he said did not work given that he wanted to
accumulate the points fast as he was playing against a good opponent.
However he said he was happy that he managed to win the game.
Summers said his opponent played well in the first set, adding that
he was happy that he managed to win the second set, although he
