The Homework Machine is a children's novel written by Dan Gutman, first published in 2006.

It tells
the story of four fifth-grade students who use a machine to do their homework for them, but soon
realize that cheating comes with consequences.

The book follows the perspectives of the four main characters: Brenton, Sam, Kelsey, and Judy.
Brenton is a genius inventor who creates the homework machine, Sam is the class clown who is
always up for a prank, Kelsey is the overachiever who is constantly stressed about her grades, and
Judy is the new girl in school who is struggling to fit in.

The four students become unlikely friends when they are assigned to work on a group project
together. Brenton reveals his invention, the homework machine, and the group decides to use it to
complete their assignments. The machine, named Belch, is able to scan any book and produce perfect
handwritten answers in a matter of seconds.

At first, the students are thrilled with their newfound free time and perfect grades. But as they
continue to use the machine, they start to realize the consequences of their actions. Their teacher
becomes suspicious of their sudden improvement and starts to investigate. The group also starts to
feel guilty about cheating and keeping such a big secret from their parents and classmates.

As the story unfolds, the four students must face the consequences of their actions and learn
valuable lessons about honesty, friendship, and the importance of hard work. The book also raises
important questions about the ethics of technology and the pressure students face to excel
academically.
