Abstract

Marriage are a socially or ritually recognized union between spouses that establishes rights and
obligations between them. Such event have the potentials of attracting tourists both locally and
internationally if properly packaged and publicized, unfortunately this aspect of tourism is yet to
be tapped of fully developed for global audiences and consumption. The purpose of the study is
to examine the contribution of Yoruba traditional marriages to tourism development in Ilaro
Ogun State. A descriptive design was adopted for the study as well as the use of purposive and
random sampling techniques. Study population includes selected indegenes of Ilaro. The study
used qualitative and quantitative method of data collection. A sample size of 25, comprising of 2
key informants and 23 respondents were used for the study, data gathered were analysed using
descriptive statistical tools such as; frequency counts, percentages and tables. It was found that
traditional weddings in Ilaro are quite colourful enough to attract tourists from others areas.
The study also showed that commercial activities in Ilaro are increased during the celebration of
Yoruba traditional weddings.
