problem.
much does each weight?

Let’s Elaborate

Discussion for activity1:

You can solve the problem using the steps below:

❖ Understand
Know what is asked: Number of packs of 0.25 kg of onions.
Know the given facts: 0.95 kg of onion and 0.55 kg of onion
Determine the operation to be used: Addition and Division
Write the number sentence: (0.95 + 0.55) ÷ 0.25 = N
Solve: Show your solution:
(0.95 + 0.55) ÷ 0.25 = N
1.50 ÷ 0.25 =6
Mother was able to pack 6 packs of onions.
❖ Check and look back: Did I do the operation correctly?
Is my answer reasonable? Did I write my answer in a complete
sentence?

72
Discussion for activity2:
STEP 1. Understand the problem. (Know what the given facts are and what is/are
being asked.)
Given:
1 polo shirt, 2 undershirts, and 3 pairs of socks cost ₱494.25
1 undershirt and 1 pair of sock cost ₱106.00
What to find: cost of 1 polo shirt and a pair of socks
Hidden question: How much does 1 polo shirt, 1 undershirt, and 2 pairs of
socks cost?
STEP 2. Plan. (Think of a strategy to solve the problem.)
Draw a diagram to solve the problem.

₱494.25

Polo shirt Undershirt ₱106.00 Pair of

socks

STEP 3. Solve the problem by using the chosen strategy.

Write the number sentences.
1 polo shirt + 2 undershirts + 3 pairs of sock = ₱494.25
1 undershirt + 1 pair of sock = ₱106.00
1 polo shirt + 1 undershirt + 2 pairs of sock = ₱388.25
1 polo shirt + 1 pair of sock = ₱282.25

₱494.25

₱282.25 ₱106.00 ₱106.00

STEP 4. Check if the answer is correct.

₱282.25 + ₱106.00 + ₱106.00 = ₱494.25

Discussion for activity 3:

You can draw a diagram to find the answer to the problem. Find two numbers whose
sum is 120.2 such that one number is thrice the other.
Ben 120.2 kg

Lea

73
To find the value of 1 unit, divide 120.2 by 4. Since 120.2 ÷ 4 = 30.05, then this means
that 1 unit is 30.05 and 3 units is 3 × 30.05 = 90.15
Therefore, Ben weighs 90.15 kg while Lea weighs 30.05. Together, they weigh
90.15 + 30.05 or 120.2 kg.

EXAMPLE 1:
James has a bamboo stick that is 70 cm long. He cuts it into 3 pieces. The first is half
the length of the second piece, which is the longest. If the longest piece is 28.4 cm,
how long is each of the other two pieces?

SOLVE:
Draw 3 pieces of rectangles to represent the sticks.

70 cm
28.4 ÷ 2 = 14.2 cm 28.4 cm 70 – (28.4 + 14.2) = 27.4 cm
First Piece Longest Piece Third Piece

Therefore, the first and the third pieces are 14.2 cm and 27.2 cm
The first piece is half the
long, respectively.
length of the second
piece, which is the
longest.

EXAMPLE 2:
Lily bought some doughnuts and pork empanada in the ratio of 4:3. Each doughnut
cost ₱45.00 and each chicken empanada cost ₱14.30 each. If she spent ₱1,114.50
altogether, how many doughnuts did she buy?

You may draw a table and make a systematic list to solve the problem.
Doughnuts Pork Empanada
Total Cost
(P45.00) (P14.30)
4:3 ₱180.00 ₱42.90 ₱222.90
8:6 ₱360.00 ₱85.80 ₱445.80
12:9 ₱540.00 ₱128.70 ₱668.70
16:12 ₱720.00 ₱171.60 ₱891.60
20:15 ₱900.00 ₱214.50 ₱1114.50

This means that Lily bought 20 doughnuts.

You may also draw a diagram to solve the problem.

Doughnut Pork Empanada

₱1, 114.50
74
Four doughnuts cost ₱180.00
Three pork empanadas cost ₱42.90
The cost of 4 doughnuts and 3 pork empanadas is equal to ₱222.90.
Dividing ₱1,114.50 by ₱222.90 yields 5.
