What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master
Hypertext and Intertext. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different
learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The
lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you
read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Identify the context in which a text is developed.

2. Distinguish Hypertext from Intertext.
3. Examine the evidence that the text uses.

What I Know

Directions: Below are some descriptions of different stories. On the line before each
number, write I if the context of each story is in Intertext; write H if it is in Hypertext.

_____1. Snow, Glass, Apples is a short story by Neil Gaiman. This piece tells the story of
Snow White from the point of view of her stepmother, who was actually trying to save the
kingdom from her bloodthirsty stepdaughter.

_____2. Wicked by Gregory Mcguire revolves around the story of the Wicked Witch of the
West from Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz and reimagines her as the misunderstood
protagonist, Elphaba.

_____3. Fast City by Don Bosco is an interactive narrative which presents a set of conflicts
and psychological landscapes placed within a technology-obsessed urban space.

_____4. The Museum by Adam Kenney emulates the experience of being in a museum by
allocating a page to each part of the museum and giving the reader free rein as to where
he/she wants to go by providing links to different “areas” of the museum.

_____5. Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding is written in a diary format and chronicles
events within a year in the life of protagonist Bridget in the 90s; it is loosely based on Jane
Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

Lesson
Hypertext and Intertext

Being a critical reader also involves understanding that texts are always developed with a
certain context. A text is neither written nor read in a vacuum; its meaning and
interpretation are affected by a given set of circumstances. Among the many factors that
contribute to the context of reading is whether they are classified as intertext or hypertext.

What’s In

Directions: Read the following paragraphs.

Text 1
During the 21st century, the word Facebook (FB) came into our awareness. In fact, it is
one of the most popular social networking sites with over one million users. Almost ¾ of these
users are between 13 to 25 years old, and these people use FB every time they have an
opportunity to do so at school, at home, in the mall, and anywhere else. So, FB seems to just
be a waste of time. It is a complete distraction to students. Many students fail to complete their
assignments and projects because they are addicted to FB. Some use words and acronyms
that only they can understand, and it crosses over even during face-to-face conversations. FB
also becomes a tool for bashing and a venue for gossiping. These are just some of my
impressions of FB.

Text 2

There is no doubt that Facebook is a great technological innovation. It offers the

opportunity to connect and reconnect with people. It is a venue for self-expression. It can be a
tool for marketing and entrepreneurship. But according to new research, Facebook makes us
spend more. It also changes our appetite by making us eat more. Facebook users tend to be
more prone to pressure as well. They tend to like things they do not really like just because
some of their friends clicked the “like” button. Other psychologists claim that Facebook is a
butcher of self-esteem. In Facebook, we see happy faces enjoying parties and dining. We see
families bonding. We see posts about people’s achievements. All of these tend to make us more
envious of other people.

5
Analyze the two texts using the questions below.

1. What do you think prompted the writers to write the paragraphs?

_________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________

2. What are your thoughts and feelings about each of the paragraphs?
_________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________

3. Who do you think are the writers and their disposition in life?
_________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________

4. What do you think is the central claim of both texts?

_________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________

5. Do you share the same sentiments with the writers?

_________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________

6. Do you think the pieces of evidence presented are sufficient and valid to support the claims?
Why or why not?
_________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________

7. Are there evident flaws in reasoning in the texts? If yes, enumerate them.

What is It

An intertext refers to a work whose meaning is shaped by referencing or calling to

mind other texts. Basically, other texts help add meaning to the current text. The reader
gets to understand the context of the piece through other texts which parallel it in terms of
plot, characters, premise, and the like. In an intertextual work, the context is not given
immediately; only through the wealth of previous knowledge and experience or further
research will the reader be able to understand the text. It can occur in either online or
printed media, but it is not limited to literature; it spans other media such as movies, songs,
and the like. An example of an intertextual work is CS Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia: The
Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. It alludes to the Bible, and some of the parts parallel
some scenes in the Bible (such as Edmund’s betrayal and Aslan’s sacrifice vis-à-vis Judas’
betrayal and the crucifixion of Jesus).
On the other hand, a work set in hypertext is characterized by the external links
embedded in a text by the writer. In a hypertext, the reader can read the text in a non-linear
way, because he is led to other links outside the main text. A work in hypertext also enables
the reader to arrive at the intended interpretation, because he is led to where the author
exactly wants him to go. The context is taken through links or commentaries directly
connected to the text being read (i.e., definitions of some terms, explanations of certain
phenomena mentioned, direction to the next part of the plot, etc.) It is given directly, since
the author has already provided the links and explanations to the reader. In an online
medium, a hypertext is evident through the embedded links of the author while in printed
media, it is seen as the commentaries and footnotes in the margins. See examples of
hypertexts below.
