Assessment task description:

• This is the second (2) assessment task you must successfully complete to be deemed
competent in this unit of competency.
• This assessment task is a Skills Test.
• This assessment task consists of two (2) practical demonstration activities.
o Activity 1: Interpret technical drawing for occasion 1
o Activity 2: Interpret technical drawing for occasion 2
• You will be notified by your trainer/assessor when your results are available.
• You must attempt all activities of the project for your trainer/assessor to assess your
competence in this assessment task.

Applicable conditions:

• This skill test is untimed and is conducted as an open book assessment (this means you are
able to refer to your textbook or other learner materials during the test).
• You will be assessed independently on this assessment task.
• No marks or grades are allocated for this assessment task. The outcome of the task will be
Satisfactory or Not Satisfactory.
• As you complete this assessment task, you are predominately demonstrating your skills,
techniques and knowledge to your trainer/assessor.
• Your trainer/assessor may ask you relevant questions during this assessment task

Purpose of the assessment

The purpose of this assessment task is to assess the student’s knowledge and skills essential to
interpret technical drawing in a range of contexts and industry settings.

Task instructions

• This assessment task requires the student to interpret technical drawings.


• The student is required to complete the following two (2) activities in this assessment task:
o Activity 1: Interpret technical drawing for occasion 1
o Activity 2: Interpret technical drawing for occasion 2
• The trainer/assessor (Supervisor) will induct you to the worksite.
• You will be required to complete all parts of this assessment task.
• The templates for each activity are provided along with this assessment task.
• The student must follow the instructions of the trainer/assessor (Supervisor).
• The trainer/assessor must assess the performance of the student as per the performance
checklist provided.

Instructions for the student:

• The student must have basic understanding of drawing techniques, symbols before interpreting
drawings required to complete this activity.
• The student must follow the instructions provided by the Supervisor.

• The student must complete the activities specified.

When interpreting technical drawings, you are required to use the standard operating procedures (SOP)
given below.
Standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices for using engineering drawing tools

DO NOT use any sharp tool unless a trainer/assessor has instructed you in its safe use and operation
and has given permission.

• It is important to choose the right measuring tool for the job. They will vary widely and are all
designed for specific purposes.

• Never misuse or abuse any of these accurately machined and calibrated measuring tools.

• To attain an accurate measurement reading, carefully handle and align the device. Take the
time to “measure twice – cut once”.
• Always try to keep your measuring tools clean and protected – away from the regular hand
tools and power tools on your workbench.
• Some measuring instruments may require regular re-calibration to maintain their accuracy.

Housekeeping requirements:

• Leave the work area in a safe, clean and tidy condition.

• Return all measuring hand tools to their appropriate storage cupboard, in a dry environment.

• Regularly clean and maintain the condition of all measuring instruments.

• Lubricate the hinge point on all callipers. Adjust and sharpen as required.

• Inspect and clean the spindle and anvil of micrometres. Re-calibrate as required.

Job responsibilities:

As part of your job role, you will have the following responsibilities:

• Select, check and validate technical drawings against job requirements or equipment

• Interpret technical drawing through recognition of components, assemblies, objects and symbols

• Identify dimensions

Roles and responsibilities (Supervisor):

The Supervisor must:

• Ensure that the student is clear about the job specifications.

• Assign a supervisor or supervise the student performing each activity.

• Observe the student performing each activity and assess them against the observation checklist
provided after each activity.
