When interpreting technical drawings, you are required to use the standard operating procedures (SOP)
given below.
Standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices for using engineering drawing tools
DO NOT use any sharp tool unless a trainer/assessor has instructed you in its safe use and operation
and has given permission.
What tools and equipment does this SOP apply to:
• Mechanical pencils
• Clutch pencils
• Technical pens
• Rulers
• Compass
• Drawing boards
• Erasers
• Sharpeners
• It is important to choose the right measuring tool for the job. They will vary widely and are all
designed for specific purposes.
• Never misuse or abuse any of these accurately machined and calibrated measuring tools.
• To attain an accurate measurement reading, carefully handle and align the device. Take the
time to “measure twice – cut once”.
• Always try to keep your measuring tools clean and protected – away from the regular hand
tools and power tools on your workbench.
• Some measuring instruments may require regular re-calibration to maintain their accuracy.
Housekeeping requirements:
• Return all measuring hand tools to their appropriate storage cupboard, in a dry environment.
• Lubricate the hinge point on all callipers. Adjust and sharpen as required.
• Inspect and clean the spindle and anvil of micrometres. Re-calibrate as required.
Job responsibilities:
As part of your job role, you will have the following responsibilities:
• Follow work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices
• Select, check and validate technical drawings against job requirements or equipment
• Interpret technical drawing through recognition of components, assemblies, objects and symbols
• Identify dimensions
• Observe the student performing each activity and assess them against the observation checklist
provided after each activity.
Task:
This assessment task requires the student to interpret technical drawings on two (2) occasions.
In technical drawings, the student may utilise perspective, exploded views or hidden view techniques,
including symbol glossaries.This includes:
• Following work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices
• Selecting, checking and validating technical drawing against job requirements or equipment
• Complete Template 2.
While completing each step, your trainer/assessor (Supervisor) will observe you performing this activity,
place a tick mark against each step and sign off the checklist after completion of each step.
