What is an Essay
An essay is a literary composition that describes, analyzes, and
evaluates a certain topic or an issue. It typically contains a
combination of facts and figures and personal opinions, ideas of the
writer.
An essay typically consists of
❖ a brief introduction,
❖ a body that consists of supporting paragraphs, and
❖ a conclusion.
❖ However, the structure, content and the purpose of an essay can
depend on the type of the essay.
An essay can be classified into various types depending on the
given essay title, or the style of the essay writer.
E.g. Narrative, Descriptive, Argumentative, Expository, Persuasive,
etc. are some of these essay types.
❖ Narrative essays tells a true story from a writer's personal
experience.
E.g. My first day at school
❖ Descriptive essays paint a story using words,
E.g. Best summer vacation ever, A rainy day
❖ The argumentative essay is a genre of writing that requires the
student to investigate a topic, collect, generate, and evaluate
evidence, and establish a position on the topic in a concise manner.
E.g. Is social media bad for relationships ?
Should schools abolish homework?
How important is art education?
❖ Expository essays present facts about a topic,
E.g. Causes of global warming, What makes a good friend? What are
the benefits of working out?
❖ Persuasive essays argue a point and try to convince readers to agree
on that point,
E.g. Is social media good or bad?
Each type of essay has its own structure to be followed but all should

analyze, present, or describe a specific topic.


Difference between persuasive essays and argumentative
essays

While persuasive writing can get by with a heartfelt emotional


appeal or a well-defended opinion, argumentative writing must
cite scientific studies, statistics and quotes from experts.
What is a Composition
The term composition can refer to any creative work. A composition
can refer a poem, short story, essay, drama, novel or even a research
paper. It refers to an original and creative literary work.
Essay is a relatively short piece of writing on a particular topic.
Composition is a creative work.
Interconnection
Essay is a type of composition.
Not all compositions are essays.
Categories
Essay can be categorized as narrative, descriptive, persuasive,
argumentative, expository, etc.
A composition can be a short story, novel, poem, essay, drama,
painting, piece of music, etc.
Prose vs verse
Essay is always written in prose.
Composition can be prose or verse.
