PAINT PROCEDURES

INTERCOOLER SHELLS/INTERSTAGE PIPING

SUBJECT & SCOPE
This specification covers the materials and procedures required to protect the compressor's interstage
cooler and gas (air) piping. This paint system consists of a two-part epoxy resin mixture which, when
properly mixed and applied, provides excellent resistance to "undercreep" type corrosion. These
paints also exhibit abrasion and general chemical resistance.

MATERIAL

PRIMER Hempadur 1540, Shade No. 5090; Curing Agent 9510

(Cooper P/N P1405340-107)

FINISH COAT Gloss Epoxy 151U, Shade No. 1115; Curing Agent 995U
(Cooper P/N P1405340-99)

THINNER Epoxy Thinner #729 (lacquer) (thinner only manufactured by Riverside

Chemical Co. Cooper P/N P1405340-110)

PROCEDURE
1. All surfaces to be painted must be cleaned by sand or shot-blasting. No trace of oil or dirt
must remain. Use the above thinner or an equivalent for final cleaning operation.
Temperature of the surface should be above 50°F, and must be completely dry.
2. Mix 4 parts (by volume) HEMPADUR 1540 with 1 part (by volume) curing agent 9510. Let
pot stand for 15 to 20 minutes before applying. Apply by air spray to film thickness of 2 to 3
mils (dry).
(NOTE: Pot life of primer after activation is approximately two hours.)
Allow primer to cure 8 hours (minimum) to 3 days (maximum) before reapplication or
topcoating.
3. Mix 4 parts Glass Epoxy 151U with 1 part curing agent 995U. Let pot stand 20 to 30 minutes
before applying. Apply by air spray to film thickness of 2-3 mils (dry).
(NOTE: Pot life of epoxy after activation is approximately 8 hours.)
