INTRODUCTION
This liturgical guide, BIHILYA SA PASKO SA PAGKABANHAW SA GINOO
[EASTER VIGIL IN THE HOLY NIGHT] 2023 EDITION, Archdiocese of Davao, is
prepared for the use of the Holy Week celebrations in the parishes of the Archdiocese of
Davao.
The parts and texts for the commentator in this printed guide are added to ensure an
active and conscious participation of the assembly in the liturgy. Minor adaptations are
also added to guide us in the actual celebration in the context of the parishes.
It must be noted that apart from these minor additions and adaptations in the rubrics and
in the parts for the commentator, the texts of the order of the mass, the proper prayers for
Bihilya sa Pasko sa Pagkabanhaw sa Ginoo [Easter Vigil in the Holy Night], and the
readings of the Liturgy of the Word are all taken from the following official sources:
May our Blessed Mother Mary and our dear Patron Saint, Señor San Pedro Apostol,
continue to intercede for us to be faithful in our worship and prayer in the Archdiocese of
Davao.
+ ROMULO G. VALLES, DD
Archbishop of Davao
NB. This Holy Week 2024 edition is an unofficial edition done by Rev. Amiel Arado for
the use of San Antonio de Padua Parish, Agdao.
The entire celebration of the Easter Vigil takes place at night. It should not begin before
nightfall; it should end before daybreak on Sunday. Even if the Vigil Mass takes place
before midnight, the Easter Mass of the Resurrection is celebrated.
Those who participate in the Mass at night may receive communion again at the second
Mass of Easter Sunday. Those who celebrate or concelebrate the Mass at night may
celebrate or concelebrate the second Mass of Easter Sunday.
The Priest and deacon wear white Mass vestments. Candles should be prepared for all
who take part in the vigil. The rite begins outside, in the grounds in front of the church.
All lights in the church and in the church grounds are turned off.
A pile of firewood is prepared at the center of the area/ground fronting the church ready
to be lit. The people are instructed to assemble around it. The Priest, concelebrating
priests, liturgical ministers and servers - no processional cross and no candles are carried
-enter and go to the prepared place for them on. When everything is ready the
commentator says:
INTRODUCTION
3
Ang Seremonyas sa Kahayag magsugod sa gawas
sa simbahan taliwala sa kangitngit, timaan sa
kadautan ug kasal-anan sa kalibutan. Sa atong
mangitngit nga agianan, si Cristo ang atong
Kahayag.
PART ONE
SOLEMN BEGINNING OF THE VIGIL:
THE SERVICE OF LIGHT
Tanan: Amen.

sa pagtigom aron pagtukaw ug pag-ampo.
Then the fire is blessed. The Priest with hands outstretched, says:
O Gamhanang Amahan,
nakaambit kami sa kahayag sa imong himaya
pinaagi sa imong Anak, ang Kahayag sa
kalibutan.
Tanan: Amen.
After the prayer, the altar servers carrying the thurible and boat, prepare by getting
charcoal from the newly blessed fire and placing them inside the thurible.
5
Commentator: Karon andamon ang Kandila Paskwal aron
sindihan.
Pari:
1. Si Cristo gahapon ug karon [as he traces the vertical arm of the
cross],
5. Iya ang mga panahon [the first numeral, in the upper left
corner of the cross],
7. Kaniya ang himaya ug gahom [the third numeral, in the lower left
corner]
6
When the cross and the other marks have been made, the Priest may insert five grains of
incense into the candle. He does this in the form of a cross, saying:
Pari:
3. magbantay 4 2 5
The Priest lights the Paschal Candle, held by the deacon/assisting minister from the new
fire, saying:
The Priest puts incense into the censer. The thurifer carries the censer swinging it a little
bit as he accompanies the procession of the Paschal Candle.
7
PROCESSION
The Priest and assisting ministers will proceed into the church after the commentator
says: Karon manulod na kita sa simbahan. At the start of the procession, two candles of
concelebrants may be lighted from the Paschal Candle. These lighted candles may be
useful/needed if the light of the Paschal Candle dies out during the procession.
The Priest and other ministers stop and wait at the area in front of the main entrance of
the church to let the people enter first and settle down.
Very important: the persons in charge of opening the doors, not only the main door but
also the side doors/entrances, must be ready to open them when it is time for people to
enter.
When the people are settled inside the church, the Paschal Candle is carried in procession
into the church, preceded by a thurifier with the smoking thurible, followed by the Priest,
concelebrating priests and other liturgical ministers.
The commentator waits for the people to settle down. When the commentator sees the
Priest with the Paschal Candle start to move in procession and enter the church he/she
says:
Candles in the congregation may be lighted at this point. Servers assist in the lighting of
candles.
Third pause, at the foot of the sanctuary, the Priest/deacon with the Paschal Candle faces
the people.
8
Diakono/Pari: Si Cristo, ang atong Kahayag!
The Priest, with the help of the deacon/assisting minister places the Paschal Candle on
the prepared stand. Then most of the lights of the church are turned on.
After this, the Priest goes to his chair. [If the Priest will sing the Exsultet, he will proceed
to the ambo instead together with servers bearing thurible and incense.]
Then the deacon or, if there is no deacon, a priest who who will sing the Exsultet, goes to
the ambo together with servers bearing thurible and incense. The Priest stands holding a
lighted candle to hear the Easter Proclamation. All stand and hold lighted candles.
EASTER PROCLAMATION

Nagdan-ag kanimo ang Manunubos nga
nabanhaw! Ug sa awit sa tibuok katawhan sa
Dios nga nagkapundok dinhi kining dapita

10
Mao kini ang gabii
kanus-a giluwas mo ang among mga ginikanan
11
Tinuod nga bulahang gabii kanus-a ang yuta
Dios!
After the Easter Proclamation, the candles are put out and put aside and all sit down.

PART TWO
LITURGY OF THE WORD
Use the Lectionary for Mass. In this vigil, the mother of all vigils, nine readings are
provided, seven from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament namely the
epistle and gospel.
The number of readings from the Old Testament may be reduced for pastoral reasons, but
it must always be borne in mind that the reading of the word of God is the fundamental
element of the Easter Vigil. At least three readings from the Old Testament should be
read, although for more serious reasons the number may be reduced to two. The reading
of Exodus 14, however is never to be omitted.
The practice in the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Davao is to have only five readings
from among the seven readings from the Old Testaments. But as noted above, one of the
five chosen readings from the Old Testament must be that of Exodus 14. After the prayer
that follows the fifth reading, please go to page 42.
Before the readings begin, the Priest speaks to the people in these or similar words:
The readings follow. A reader goes to the lectern and proclaims the first reading. Then
the cantor leads the psalm and the people respond. After the Responsorial Psalm a prayer
is recited by the priest. All rise for this.

[Option B]
O Ginoong Dios,
ang paghimo sa tawo
maoy usa ka katingalahang buhat,
apan ang pagtubos kaniya mas katingalahan pa
gayod.
Itugot nga makasukol kami
sa kamadanihon sa sala
pinaagi sa paggamit sa imong mga gasa,
ug nga makadangat kami sa walay katapusang
kalipay sa langit.
Tanan: Amen.

man kini ug wala mo ihikaw kanako ang imong
bugtong anak.

24
Ang akong kusog ug akong kaisog mao
ang Ginoo, ug siya ang akong manunubos.
Siya ang akong Dios, daygon ko siya;
ang Dios sa akong amahan,
ako siyang bayawon.
25
Commentator: Palihug manindog.
PRAYER
Pari: Mag-ampo kita:
Amahan namo,
hangtod karong mga adlawa makita pa namo
ang mga katingalahan nga imong gihimo kanhi.
Kaniadto imong gitubos ang usa ka nasod
gikan sa pagka-ulipon,
ug karon gitanyag nimo ang maong kaluwasan
ngadto sa tanan
pinaagi sa pagbunyag.
Ang tanang mga tawo sa tibuok kalibutan
makapahimulos unta sa mga pribilihiyo
nga imong gisaad
sa mga anak ni Abraham,
ang lungsod sa Dios
ug mahimong takos nga kabilin sa Israel.
Tanan: Amen.

Dios.

SALMO RESPONSORYO Ps. 30:2, 4, 5-6, 11-12, 13
28
Commentator: Palihug manindog.

Tanan: Amen.
29
Pamati kamo ug duol kanako, aron dili kamo
mamatay; maghimo akog walay katapusang
ug magtutudlo nila. Tawgon ninyo ang mga nasod
nga wala ninyo hiilhi, ug magdagan sila nganha
kaninyo.
30
SALMO RESPONSORYO Is 12:2-3, 4, 5-6
31
Commentator: Palihug manindog.
PRAYER
Tanan: Amen.
32
Pagtuon hain ang pagsabut, ang kusog, ug hain
hikaplagi ang kahibalo. Unya mahibalo ikaw asa
kinabuhing dayon.
PRAYER
Pari: Mag-ampo kita:
O Amahan,
gidugangan mo ang imong Simbahan
pinaagi sa kanunay mong pagtawag sa tanang
katawhan ngadto sa kaluwasan.
Patalinghugi ang among mga pag-ampo
ug bantayi kanunay sila nga imong gihinloan
diha sa Bunyag.
Tanan: Amen.
35
katawhan miingon man, ‘Mao kini sila ang
katawhan nga pinili sa Dios, apan gihinginlan sila
gikan sa ilang nasod.’ Busa gipanalipdan ko ang
balaan kong ngalan nga gipakaulawan sa katawhan
sa Israel didto sa kanasuran nga ilang giadtoan.”
36
SALMO RESPONSORYO [Ps 42: 3–5; 43: 3-4]
kalag nangandoy kanimo, akong Dios.
Magbabasa: Ang akong kalag giuhaw sa Dios,
sa buhi nga Dios.
Kanus-a man ako moadto
ug mosud-ong sa nawong sa Dios?
37
Unya pasalamatan ko ikaw diha
sa alpa, O Dios, akong Dios.
Option A
Tanan: Amen.

38
Option B
O Amahan,
gitudloan mo kami diha sa Daan ug
Bag-ong Kasabutan sa pagsaulog niining
misteryo sa Pasko sa Pagkabanhaw.
Tabangi kami sa pagsabot sa imong dakong
gugma kanamo.
Ang kaayo nga imong gipakita karon kanamo
maglig-on unta sa among paglaum
diha sa imong kaluoy nga among gipaabot.
Kini among gipangayo
pinaagi ni Cristo among Ginoo.
Tanan: Amen.
_____________________________________________________________
After the prayer of the last reading and responsorial psalm from the Old Testament, the
commentator invites the people to remain standing.
Then the Gloria is sung with the ringing of bells! All lights (the final set) in the parish
are switched on. At the start of the Gloria servers/designated persons cover the altar with
the altar cloth, place flowers and light the candles. The last: deacon/assisting priest places
the Gospel Book on the altar. He gets it from the ambo.
PAG-AMPO SA KATILINGBAN
After the Gloria, the priest sings or says the Opening Prayer in the usual way.
39
Dasiga ang espiritu sa pagka-sinagop
dinhi sa imong santos nga Simbahan
aron tapos mabag-o sa lawas ug sa kalag
mag-alagad kami kanimo sa tibuok namong
kasingkasing.
Tanan: Amen.
40
Cristo Jesus.
ALLELUIA
After the epistle, all rise. The Alleluia is intoned three times by the presider or the
deacon, raising the note a little higher each time. The people respond after each
intonation.
Priest/Deacon: Alleluia.
Tanan: Alleluia.
At the third response the cantor of the psalm goes to the ambo to sing the Psalm.
41
Magbabasa: Ang tuong kamot sa Ginoo
mibakyaw uban sa gahom;
While people is singing the last response, the cantor of the psalm returns to his place.
Then the deacon proceeds to the ambo for the proclamation of the Gospel. If necessary,
the response is repeated until the deacon reaches the ambo.
GOSPEL
Incense is used at the gospel; candles are not carried.
CYCLE B
GOSPEL Mk. 16. 1-7
Diakono/Pari: Kinutlo gikan sa Balaan nga Ebanghelyo
sumala ni San Marcos
42
Ug nag-ingnanay sila sa usa’g-usa, “Kinsa may
moligid sa bato alang kanato gikan sa pultahan
sa lubnganan?” Ug sa ilang pagtan-aw, nakita
nila nga ang bato nga hilabihan kadako, naligid
na.

PART THREE
LITURGY OF BAPTISM
A designated minister now reads the names of those who will be baptized. As each is
called, he/she steps forward together with his/her godparents. As practiced/instructed they
form a nice line facing the altar.
INVITATION TO PRAYER
After the reading of the names, the Priest stands and says:
The candidates for baptism together with their godparents remain standing facing the
altar.
44
Pari /Cantor
Ginoo, kaloy-i kami Ginoo, kaloy-i kami.
Cristo, kaloy-i kami Cristo, kaloy-i kami.
Ginoo, kaloy-i kami Ginoo, kaloy-i kami.
45
Santa Catalina Iampo mo kami.
Pinaagi sa misteryo
sa Imong pagkatawo Ginoo, luwasa kami.
Pinaagi sa Imong
Kamatayon ug Pagkabanhaw Ginoo, luwasa kami.
Pinaagi sa Imong pagpadala
sa Espiritu Santo Ginoo, luwasa kami.
46
Tudloi ug panalipdi Nangamuyo kami, ug pamatia
ang Imong Simbahan ang among pag-ampo.
47
Ug ang buhat sa among mapaubsanon nga
pagpang alagad modangat unta sa kahingpitan
pinaagi sa imong gamhanang kusog.
Tanan: Amen.
The candidates for baptism with their godparents remain standing near the baptistery for
the Blessing of the Baptismal Water.
48
nga magpawagtang sa sala ug magpasugod sa
kaayo.
Then the Priest may lower the Easter candle into the water either once or three times, as he
continues:
Nangamuyo kami kanimo Amahan, ug sa
imong Anak: ipadala ang Espiritu Santo dinhi
sa mga tubig niining Tuburan.
49
He holds the candle in the water.
Tanan: Amen.
Then the candle is taken out of the water and is placed back on its stand as the people
sing the acclamation:
The Priest with servers – microphone bearer, book bearer, etc., - go to the center of the
sanctuary facing the congregation. Very important to prepare: bring in a special
vessel which is easy to use to get water from the baptismal font to be used in
baptizing. Also prepare Oil of Catechumens and Chrism.
PROFESSION OF FAITH
RENUNCIATION OF SIN
The candidates with godparents are led by the facilitators/catechists to the center facing
the altar/Priest, forming a line as they did earlier. Those who are to be baptized renounce
the devil individually. They are questioned about their faith and then are baptized.
50
Candidates: Amen.
The Priest anoints each candidate with the oil of catechumens on both hands, on the
breast, or, if this seems desirable, on the other parts of the body.
PROFESSION OF FAITH
Then the Priest, questions the candidates individually, responding with answers as their
Profession of Faith.
51
Candidate/s: Nagatuo ako.
Tanan: Amen.
BAPTISM
The Priest baptizes each candidate. He with ministers assisting him gets water from the
font for baptizing. The godparents place their right hand on the shoulder of each
candidate as he/she is baptized.
EXPLANATORY RITES
The garment used in this rite is white. The designated person presents the baptismal
garment to the Priest, who in turn gives the garment to the godparents.
After which, the Priest says the following formulary, and at the words “Receive this
baptismal garment” the godparents place the garment on the newly baptized.
52
Pari: N… and N…, bag-o na kamo karon nga mga
binuhat, nagsul-ob na kamo kang Cristo.
Dawata kining maputing sapot sa bunyag. Ug
ampingi kini ninyo nga wala’y buling hangtod
sa hukmanan sa atong Ginoong Jesucristo aron
kamo makabaton sa kinabuhing wala’y
katapusan.
A designated minister brings to the priest the candles. The Priest gives each godparent a
candle lit from the Paschal Candle. Before doing this, he says:
53
CELEBRATION OF CONFIRMATION
INVITATION
Adults are confirmed immediately after baptism if a bishop or a Priest with a faculty to
confirm is present.
The Priest first speaks briefly to the newly baptized in these or similar words.
54
Ang maong Espiritu maglig-on unta kanila
pinaagi sa naghinangpin Niyang mga hatag. Iya
unta silang dihogan aron mahisama sila kang
Cristo ang Anak sa Dios.
LAYING ON OF HANDS
The Priest holds his hands outstretched over the entire group of those to be confirmed and
says the following prayer.
Tanan: Amen.
55
Pari: Ang kalinaw maanaa kanimo.
56
Busa, mangutana ako kaninyo…
The commentator must lead/help the people in their response.
57
Ginoong Jesucristo, mihatag kanato’g bag-ong
Bantayan unta kita niya aron
magmakanunayon kita sa atong Ginoong
Jesucristo hangtod sa kahangturan.
Tanan: Amen.
When the sprinkling is concluded and the Priest has returned to his chair, the
commentator says:
KATILINGBANONG PAG-AMPO
Pari: Uban sa tumang kalipay sa pagkabanhaw sa
atong Ginoo, mangamuyo kita ngadto sa atong
langitnong Amahan, kansang gugma walay
katapusan, kita moingon:
58
Mag-ampo kita:
59
Pari: Mahigugmaong Amahan, sa kanunay nagasalig
kami nga Imong patalinghugan kining among
mga pag-ampo kung kini makahatag og
kaayohan kanamo.
Tanan: Amen.
PART FOUR
LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST
The Priest goes to the altar and begins the Liturgy of the Eucharist in the usual way. It is
fitting that the bread and wine be brought forward by the newly baptized.
It is strongly suggested that from here on, the SAKRAMENTARYO will be used.
Tanan: Amen.
60
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
Tanan: Amen.
CONCLUDING RITE
