Writing task 1 - Processes

Structure of a Process

I. Introduction
1.The diagram shows…
2.The number of major stages or number of steps

II.Body
1. Describe the major stages, giving more details by answering “why?” & “how?”
2. Can be 1 paragraph or divide into paragraphs (if clear stages)
3. If linear process: confirm the final stage
4. If circular process: “a new cycle begins”

Analysing a Process

1. Number the stages (if something leaves the process, number this step before
continuing the main process)
2. Write the past participles of verbs on the steps – for use with passive voice
(you may need to decide the verbs if they are not shown)
3. Note any step with a purpose (“in order to”)

Notes

- No need to try to paraphrase terms (unless verbs are used more than once)
- Describe in time sequence
- Use time connectors
- Use present simple (as past dates are not normally shown)
- Use passive voice
