I. SCOPE:
This practice covers procedures for preparation, process of installation – removal and safety
consideration during retrieval corrosion coupon and probe.
II. REFERENCED DOCUMENTS:
III. EQUIPMENTS:
• Retractable
• Mechanical tools set/tool kit
• Diverter hose assembly and testing equipment
IV. SAFETY:
• Importance Test and check should be done to all equipment before attempting to use in field.
• Safe operation requires, trained operator.
• Make sure you have complied with all plant safety requirements and environmental
regulations.
• Identify the type media its pressure and temperature. Review material safety data information
on the media prior to operation.
• Ensure you have all the required safety equipment and used, i.e.: protective clothing, safety
helmet, safety glasses, safety gloves, ear plug, safety shoes and breathing apparatus when
toxic atmosphere exists.
• Any actions, which could vary system pressure such as surges, caused by opening and closing
of valves and chokes should be delayed until completion of retrieval operations.
• Insure you have enough clearance for safe operation; there must be sufficient space available
for head room as well as enough shoulder room to allow free movement of the equipment as
well as of the operator.
For shoulder room above ground level requires 3 feet radius circle and below ground level a
minimum diameter of 4 feet is required with the fitting located off to one side of the hole.
Note: Wind direction prior to starting operations involving hazardous products. The Use of
Diverter Hose Assembly is recommended.
• Ensure you have scaffolding if the fitting that to be serviced is mounted above the operator.

V. PROCEDURE OPERATION
CAUTION: DO NOT STAND DIRECTLY BEHIND A COUPON IN SERVICE WHICH HAS A SAFETY
CLAMP REMOVED OR ON WHICH THE NUT CLAMP IS LOOSENED, UNLESS SUFFICIENT BACK
PRESSURE IS MAINTAINED ON THE COUPON, ALL PERSONNEL SHOULD BE FAMALIAR WITH
THE PROPER PROCEDURE FOR COUPON INSERTION AND REMOVAL.
A. INSTALLATION STEP:
1. Mount the Coupon onto the coupon holder and tighten, marking the coupon orientation with
pen, pull/retract the coupon using handle above. Corrosion coupon should be at inside of
packing gland body or nipple.
2. Make sure Close position the existing Ball Valve. The vessel may now be pressurized if
desired.
3. If Safety Clamp Assy has been installed, remove the outer two nuts closes to the coupon
holder connector end / Rod holder.
4. Loosen the Nut Clamp and Nut Gland little bit, slowly, but do not remove.
5. Pull slowly rod coupon holder as possible.
6. Apply thread sealing compound to the threads of the valve outlet nipple (with seal ptfe)
7. Install the nipple to the valve and make sure the bleed valve are closed
8. Tighten the Nut Gland Hand-tight (prevent leak from seal)
9. While maintaining counter pressure on the coupon holder end, open the ball valve slowly to
equalize pressure in the assembly until pressure balance on above valve. (if leak indicate
close valve immediately and maintenance)
10. Push/Insert the handle coupon holder to the pipe as desired orientation and penetration
as marking pen orientation.

11. While continuing to maintain counter pressure, tighten the Nut Clamp hand tight (prevent
leak from seal)
12. While continuing to maintain counter pressure, tighten the Nut Gland hand Tight (for
locking coupon holder position)
13. Install Safety Clamp thread rod, check all connection if any leak on thread connection
should be tighten again as necessary. Do not over tighten the Nut Gland, as this may damage
the packings seal.
B. REMOVAL STEP:
1. Hold/Apply counter pressure to the coupon holder connector and before loosening any
nipple/fittings.
2. If a Safety Clamp Assy/kit has been installed on the coupon, remove the outer nuts to the
Coupon holder connector end (upper safety clamp)
3. Loosen slowly the Nut Clamp until it can be turned freely. Gradually loosen the Nut Gland
slowly until the coupon can be pull/moved out slowly. (Pulling the handle slowly and don’t
stand above the stick, prevent from back pressure)
4. Allow the coupon to retract until either the shield contacts the bottom of the Packing Gland
Assembly or the safety wire is fully extended (pull the handle fully)
5. When the coupon is extracted/full, close the valve slowly. Extract coupon fully before closing
valve will result in damage to the coupon and valve.
6. Caution, slowly release all pressure above the valve (packing gland) using bleed valve
slowly, unscrew the nipple on packing gland assembly from the valve.
7. Make sure the coupon was removed, check in the inside nipple or packing gland body.
8. Push/retract the coupon and remove or change with the new coupon. Write and record the
coupon on envelope
