DIRECTIONS
**Please note that the center activities in this packet are
designed to be printed (on cardstock) and laminated, and to be
used and enjoyed for many years to come. J
Bugs and Insects - Patterning - Have children cut and glue to

complete the patterns. Discuss the patterns and encourage
young learners to describe and identify them.
Bugs and Insects – Counting Sets - Instruct children to use

one-to-one correspondence to count (touch each bug/insect with
their finger as they say its number name) and to color or dot
the number.
Friendly Fleas – Number Order - Students will determine the

missing numbers and write them. Learners should be working
on/using their pincer grips and writing top to bottom.
During this activity, be sure to facilitate conversation about
the basic concept of ordinal numbers (Before, after, in
between).

DIRECTIONS
Growing Grasshoppers – Size Skills - Children will cut out the
grasshoppers and arrange them by size. They will then glue them
onto a piece of construction paper from smallest to
biggest/shortest to longest or vice versa. Discuss other words
to describe big and small.
Bugs and Insects – Length and Height – Young learners will

color the longer pictures and the taller pictures.
Buzz Off! – Graphing – Instruct children to count one group of

bugs/insects at a time and to color the corresponding boxes.
Students can then count the colored squares again and write the
numbers. Discuss which there are more of and which there are
less of.
Ladybug Roll & Color – Set Recognition – Provide a die and some
crayons. Learners will then roll the die and color all of the
matching sets. Younger children will count the sets of dots while
older children should be practicing set recognition.
Bugs and Insects – Measure and Record – This worksheet is to

be used in conjunction with the Measuring Cards. Students will
measure and record their measurements. Discuss which bugs and
insects are longer, shorter, or the same length.

Got Wings? – Classification – Prompt students to study the
pictures and determine which bugs/insects crawl and which fly.
Children can then cut, sort, and glue the pictures onto their
appropriate spaces.
What is Missing? – Children will determine which picture is

missing from each row, then cut and glue. Depending on the
child’s ability, a sheet of paper may be used to cover the other
pictures as he/she works one row at a time.
A Fly on the Wall - Beginning Sounds - Encourage learners to

sound out the pictures and find their matching letter sounds.
They may then color, cut, and glue the pictures.
Garden Buddies - Matching Letters - Students will identify and

circle the matching letters on each line.
Diggin’ Up Dirt – Association - Students will study the pictures

in each circle and color the ones that go together. Facilitate
conversation as to why the items do or do not belong together.

Critter Clap & Count - Segmenting Syllables - Instruct children
to cut out the pictures. Have them say each picture name and
clap and count each word part. Students will then sort the
pictures by the number of syllables, and glue them onto their
appropriate spaces. Note: For more syllable fun, be sure to see
the Bugs in a Jar center activity (with 3 syllable words)
included in this packet.
Make a Beeline – Letter Sound Association – Students will draw

a line to connect the pictures with matching beginning sounds.
They will then color the pairs the same color.
In the Mud – Letter Formation – Children will trace the words.

As they form each letter, encourage them to place their writing
utensils on the starting point (black dot) and to write from top
to bottom.
Munching Leaves – ABC Order – Learners will cut out the

lettered leaves and glue them onto their appropriate spaces to
complete the ABC order.

Bugs and Insects Measuring Cards - Provide pom poms, vase
gems, Unifix Cubes, mini erasers or some other manipulative for
children to measure (non-standard) the length of the bugs and
insects. Discuss which are shorter and which are longer, and which
are the same length.
NOTE: The included worm and snail measuring cards are optional.
While the snail and worm are neither bugs nor insects, they ARE
“creepy crawlers”, and these cards have proved to be a hit with
children. If you decide to use the snail and worm, be sure to
explain why they are not bugs or insects. Please know that these
two cards are not featured on the Bugs and Insects Measure and
Record worksheet.
Build a Bug Playdough Activity Cards - Supply students with

playdough, googly eyes, foam hearts, buttons, acrylic jewels
and/or sequins, and cut pieces of straws and pipe cleaners/fuzzy
sticks. Students will choose a card and build a bug using the
“recipe”. The hearts can be used as wings, and the straws and
pipe cleaners as legs and antennae. OR the items may be used
ANY way the children see fit. J

Bugs and Insects Number Match Up Puzzles - Cut the cards in
half. Young learners will complete the puzzles by matching the
quantity of bugs and insects to their corresponding numerals.
Ladybug Number Quantity - Provide students with black vase

gems or some other small manipulative. Learners will give the
ladybugs their spots by placing a numbered group of items on its
corresponding task card. Encourage younger children to use one-
to-one correspondence while counting. Older children can use this
activity to practice set recognition.
Bugs and Insects Rhyming Task Cards - Students will say the
names of each picture and find and mark its rhyming partner.
Provide clothespins, small plastic bugs or some other manipulative
for children to use as markers.

Bug Out! Letter Spin & Cover - Cut out the spinner card and
attach a paperclip spinner with a round head fastener (brad).
Provide vase gems, mini erasers, pom poms, or some other small
manipulative for students to use as markers. Dot markers may
be used for the black and white sheets.
Young learners will spin, identify the letter, and cover it on

their sheet. Continue until the sheet is completely covered. When
using this activity in small group, children will take turns
spinning. First player to cover his/her sheet wins. Trade cards
and play again!
Bugs in a Jar Syllable Clap & Count - Cut out the jar cards
along with the syllable cards. Students will say the picture (bug)
name and clap and count each word part. Learners will then
place the picture card on the appropriate jar labeled with the
amount of syllables. Note: Be sure to see the Critter Clap &
Count worksheet (included in this packet) for more fun with
syllables.
Bugs and Insects Writing Tray Letter Cards - Provide a shallow

tray filled with sand (salt or sugar may also be used) for
children to use. Using a small branch or their fingers, learners
will practice letter formation using the letter cards as guides.
