What is It

Tools

Crimping Tool is basically an RJ-45 or RJ-11 cable pinching tool that curls
the little wires inside so that they attach to the connector head. The crimping
tool is used on both computer network and landline telephone cable.

LAN Tester assists users in the installation and control of networks. It is

normally used by technical service professionals and network
administrators.

Wire stripper designed to remove insulation or outer sheath of a cable.

Materials

UTP cable is commonly used for network cable especially for Ethernet cable.
Ethernet cables can be wired as straight through or crossover. The straight
through is the most common type and is used to connect computers to hubs
or switches. You most likely will find it when you go to your local computer
store and buy a patch cable.

12
RJ-45 connector is a
plastic plug that is used
the ends of cables.68A and
T568B
Wiring Standard Basis

A RJ45 connector is a modular 8

position, 8 pin connector used for
terminating Cat5e patch cable or
Cat6 cable. A pinout is a specific
arrangement of wires that dictate
how the connector is terminated.
There are two standards
recognized by ANSI, TIA and EIA
for wiring Ethernet cables. The
first is the T568A wiring standard
and the second is T568B. T568B
has surpassed 568A and is seen
as the default wiring scheme f or
twisted pair structured cabling.

2. Green 2. Orange
3. White Orange 3. White Green
4. Blue 4. Blue
5. White Blue 5. White Blue
6. Orange 6. Green
7. White Brown 7. White Brown
8. Brown 8. Brown

13
1. Straight through cable is a type of
twisted pair cable that is used in
local area networks to connect a
computer to a network hub such as
a router. This type of cable is also
sometimes called a patch cable and
is an alternative to wireless
connections where one or more
computers access a router through
a wireless signal. On a straight
through cable, the wired pins
match. Straight through cable use
one wiring standard: both ends use
T568A wiring standard or both ends
use T568B wiring standard. The
following figure shows a straight
through cable of which both ends
are wired as the T568B standard.

Use straight through Ethernet

cable for the following cabling:

• Switch to router
• Switch to PC or server
• Hub to PC or server

14
1. Crossover Ethernet cable is a
type of Ethernet cable used to
connect computing devices
together directly. Unlike straight
through cable, the RJ45 crossover
cable uses two different wiring
standards: one end uses the
T568A wiring standard, and the
other end uses the T568B wiring
standard. The internal wiring of
the Ethernet crossover cables
reverses the transmission and
receive signals. It is most often
used to connect two devices of the
same type: e.g. two computers (via
network interface controller) or
two switches to each other.

Use crossover cables for the following

cabling:

• Switch to switch
• Switch to hub
• Hub to hub
• Router to router
• Router Ethernet port to PC NIC
• PC to PC

1. Straight-Through refers to
cables that have the pin
assignments on each end of
the cable. In other words, Pin
1 connector A goes to Pin 1 on
connector B, Pin 2 to Pin 2,
etc. Straight-Through wired
cables are most commonly
used to connect a host to a
client. When we talk about
cat5e patch cables, the
Straight-Through wired cat5e
patch cable is used to connect
computers, printers, and other
network client devices to the
router switch or hub (the host

15
device in this instance)

2. CROSSOVER CABLES - The

purpose of a Crossover Ethernet
cable is to directly connect one
computer to another computer
(or device) without going through
a router, switch or hub.

Cable and connector pinouts

Pin name and function:

1. Transmit Data Plus (TD+): The positive signal for the TD differential pair. The
signal contains the serial output data stream transmitted onto the network.

2. Transmit Data Minus (TD-): The negative signal for the TD differential pair.
This contains the same output as pin 1.

3. Receive Data Plus (RD+): The positive signal for the RD differential pair.
The signal contains the serial input data stream received from the network.

4. Not used.

5. Not used.

6. Receive Data Minus (RD-): The negative signal for the RD differential pair.
The signal contains the same input as pin 3.

Making Ethernet Cables

When talking about cable pinouts, we often get questions as to the difference
in Straight-through, Crossover, and Rollover wiring of cables and the
intended use for each type of cable. These terms are referring to the way the
cables are wired (which pin on one end is connected to which pin on the
other end.

Materials needed:

• RJ45
• UTP cable (minimum of 1.5 meter)

Tools needed

• Crimping Tools
• Wire Stripper
• LAN Cable Tester

Safety Tips/Rules:

1. No food or drink.
2. Wear safety glasses.
3. Wear protective aprons.
4. Keep hands away from face.
5. Clean up afterward.
6. Use proper tools.

Here's how to make a standard cable:

1. Cut into the plastic sheath
about 1 inch (2.5 cm)
from the end of the cut
cable. The crimping tool
has a razor blade that
will do the trick with
practice.

2. Unwind and pair the

similar colors.

17
3. Pinch the wires between
your fingers and
straighten them out as
shown. The color order is
important to get correct.

4. Use a crimping tool to

make a straight cut
across the 8 wires to
shorten them to 1/2 Inch
(1.3 cm) from the cut
sleeve to the end of the
wires.

5. Carefully push all 8

unstripped colored wires
into the connector. Note
the position of the blue
plastic sleeve. Also note
how the wires go all the
way to the end.

6. A view from the top. All the

wires are all the way in.
There are no short wires.

18
7. CRIMPING THE CABLE
... carefully place the
connector into the Ethernet
Crimper and cinch down on
the handles tightly. The
copper splicing tabs on the
connector will pierce into
each of the eight wires.
There is also a locking tab
that holds the blue plastic
sleeve in place for a tight
compression fit. When you
remove the cable from the
crimper, that end is ready to
use.

8. For a standard "Straight

Through" cable, repeat all
steps and wire color order on
the other end of cable. For a
cross-over cable, the other
end will have a different
color order as shown by the
crossover picture above.

What's More
General Directions: Read the items very carefully. Write your answers in a clean
sheet of paper.

Activity 1.3

19
