Background (Significance)
I. INTRODUCTION
● Depression casts a long shadow across the globe, affecting million regardless of

gentle whisper to a defening roar, and candisrupteverycorneroflife, fromschool

D
Dr. Aaron T. Beck, a psychiatrist and a pioneer in cognitive therapy, introduced the Beck
●
Depression Inventory (BDI-I) in 1961. This tool, initially comprising 21 items reflecting
depressionsysmptoms,aimedtogaugedepressionseverityandserveasscreeningtool.Dr.
Beck and colleagues affirmed its reliability and validity, leading to widespread adoption in
research and clinical settings. The revised version, BDI-II, has sustained its significance.
II. DEPRESSION
● A number of studies have indicated a high prevalence of mental healthproblems among
s tudents, including depression, compared to the rest of the population (Yusoff et al., 2013).
More importantly, recent studies in this area indicate that the psychological and mental
problems of students continue to increase (Field, Diego, Pelaez, Deeds & Delgado, 2012).
For example, research from Centers for Disease Control (CDC) the over a third of high
school students have poor mental health recently. Worse, nearly half struggle with persistent
sadness and hopelessness.
● During their academic life young people face many contradictions and obligations to
succeed, especially at university (Arslan, Ayranci, Unsal & Arslants, 2009). Also, university
students should make the efforts to embrace new experiences and changes in social
aspects, and in behavioural, emotional, academic and economic situations (Ginwright &
James, 2002). Therefore, it is important to understand concerns regarding students’ mental
health.
Depression rates in young people have risen sharply in the past decade, especially in
●
females, which is of concern because adolescence is a period of rapid social, emotional,
and cognitive development and key life transitions. Adverse outcomes associated with
depression in young people include depression recurrence; the onset of other psychiatric
disorders; and wider, protracted impairments in interpersonal, social, educational, and
occupational functioning. Thus, prevention and early intervention for depression in young
people are priorities. In fact, based on the World Health Organization, around 3.8 percent of
the world’s population grapples with this burden, with adults bearin the brunt. Among them,
women stand at a hiher precipice, with 6 percent facing the depths of depression compared
to 4 percent of men. Older adults, too, find themselves more susceptible, with 5.7 percent
navigating this challenging terrain. Tragically, this darkness can lead to to the unthinkable.
Each year, over 700,000 lives are extinguished by suicide, a chilling testament to the
prfound impact of depression. This stark reality makes it the fourth leadig cause death for
young people aged 15-29, a stark reminder of the urgency in adressing this global chalenge.
● In recent years, mental health concerns, particularly depression, have become increasingly
r ecognized in educational settings. This research aims to explore the prevalence and
severity of depressive symptoms among senior high students at Bonifacio D. Borebor.

research projects, including those addressing mental health and psychological issues. This
endorsement is rooted in the belief that student-led research can foster a deeper
understanding of critical issues affecting their community. Furthermore, it aligns with
educational objectives of developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This
research not only aligns with DepEd's directives but also seeks to contribute to the growing
body of knowledge on student’s mental health, a crucial step in developing effective
strategies and interventions.
According to the article of “Manila Bulletin”, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian secured a P210

million boost for DepEd’s mental health initiatives in the 2024 budget, exceeding his initial
proposal of p160 million. This increase comes in response to a concerning rise in school
suicides and attempted suicides, with DepEd data revealing 1,686 deaths and 7,892
attempts between 2017 and 2023. This funding will bolster DepEd’s efforts to address the
mental health crisis among Filipino students..
