Library Catalog Flipped Classroom Lesson plan

Audience:
High School - 9th grade

Learning Objectives:
Learn how to use the PHHS online catalog
Learn about SORA (ebooks/audiobooks)
Learn about the PHHS physical library materials and resources

At Home Portion:
Students will go to nearpod.com, and enter the following code: TRPY6.
They will work through the slides, videos, and activities in order to learn about the
library catalog/SORA.

In Class Portion:
Review -
How many students completed the at home nearpod?
What did you learn about the library catalog and SORA?

Quick individual challenge [each challenge is 1pt]-


Login to your chromebook, and pull up the PHHS library catalog (do you remember
how from the nearpod?)

Find a book that is -


-a historical fiction ebook (remember what tool to use for ebooks?)
-a fantasy audiobook (remember what tool to use for audiobooks?)
-a Beehive nominee
-a novel in another language
-a book by Neal Shusterman
-a novel from the elementary school
-a book in a series
-any book about science
-a book on one of our reading lists
-a novel you have checked out (if you don’t have anything checked out, just pull up
your account)

Bonus points [2pts each]: How would you find this book (show catalog record) in the
physical library? Where would you go to request the library buy a specific book? What
research help does the library offer & where do you find it?

If you received,
12-16 points you are a genius librarian

Now that you are more familiar with our online resources, let’s discover more about
our physical resources.

Intro to goosechase - you’ll be in teams of 3. Your goal is to become more familiar with
the physical layout and resources in the library. As a team, find the scavenger hunt
items around the library as quickly and accurately as possible. You have 15minutes.
Go!

***Note: I don’t think I can share the actual goosechase, but there are scavenger hunt
items for library clubs (posters hanging up), makerspace, different genre sections in the
library, chromebook checkout, phone charging, puzzles/games, displays, computer use,
and even specific books.

Discussion/Exit Ticket - what have you learned about PHHS library’s physical and
online resources? What questions do you still have? What would you like to learn
more about? How can you use the library during your high school experience?
