Verbs
to communicate: to share information with others by speaking, writing, moving your body, or
using other signals.
to respect: to feel or show admiration for someone or something that you believe has good
ideas or qualities.
to adjust: to change something slightly, especially to make it more correct, effective, or
suitable:
ex: If the chair is too high you can adjust it to suit you.

New words
confidence: the quality of being certain of your abilities or of having trust in people, plans, or
the future. (confiança)

homestay: a type of vacation or visit in which you stay in the home of a person you do not
know. (homestay)

dorm: a large building at a college or university where students live. (dormitório)


ex: Smoking is not permitted in college dorms.

diversity: the fact of many different types of things or people being included in something; a
range of different things or people. (diversidade)
ex: Does television adequately reflect the ethnic and cultural diversity of the country.

preference: the fact that you like something or someone more than another thing or person.
(preferência)
ex: Her preference is for comfortable rather than stylish clothes.

difference: the way in which two or more things which you are comparing are not the same.

quality: how good or bad something is. (qualidade)

barrier: a long pole, fence, wall, or natural feature, such as a mountain or sea, that stops
people from going somewhere. (barreira)

guest: a person who is staying with you, or a person you have invited to a social occasion,
such as a party or a meal. (convidado)

temporary: not lasting or needed for very long. (temporário)

permanent: lasting for a long time or forever. (permanente)

shocking: offensive, upsetting, or immoral.(chocante)


ex: There are few crimes more truly shocking than the murder or abuse of children.

flexible: able to change or be changed easily according to the situation. (flexível)


ex: My schedule is flexible - I could arrange to meet with you any day next week.

Useful phrases
Certain: particular but not named or described.
ex: We have certain reasons for our decision, which have to remain confidential.
unlikely: not probable or likely to happen.(improvável)
ex: It's pretty unlikely (that) they'll turn up now - it's almost ten o'clock.

likely: If something is likely, it will probably happen or is expected:. (provável)


ex: Do remind me because I'm likely to forget.

unacceptable: too bad to be accepted, approved of, or allowed to continue. (inaceitável)
