Chemical reactions between

Zinc and HCL

Zinc
and hydrochloric acid
By: Mohammed Hameed

Zn+HCL=ZnCl2 +H2
Safety precautions
For your safety, we will need you to stand away from the experiment, and please do not touch
anything. The reason being, we will be using hydrochloric acid, which is extremely corrosive.
Thank you!

The chemical reaction

In this endothermic reaction, the energy that is given off, is completely from the Zinc. Simply,
what you will be witnessing with your bare eyes, is oxidation, but sped up. The atoms of Zinc,
are giving electrons, while the atoms of the hydrochloric acid are gaining more electrons. So the
acid is the reduction, and the Zinc is the oxidation. The reaction will create Hydrogen gas,
which will be trapped in a balloon, so no one will breathe it in.

Oxidation and Redox

What is oxidation and redox? You may be asking, so I'll tell you what they mean. Firstly, the
definition of oxidation. Oxidation is the release of electrons when combining chemically with
Oxygen. While the definition of redox is: the oxidation and reduction considered as
complementary processes.

The reactants and products

The reactants in this experiment are:

1. Zinc ( Zn )
2. Hydrochloric acid ( HCL)

The products of this experiment are:

1. Zinc Chloride ( ZnCl2)

2. Hydrogen gas ( H2)
