1.1.1 Basic precautions on use

Do not operate the machine in any way other than as instructed in this manual.

● Do not modify this machine. Doing so could result in fire or electric

shock. Moreover, if the machine were modified, the semiconductor
laser contained in the machine could expose the user to laser
radiation.
● Do not remove covers and parts that are fastened with screws. Doing
so could result in injury or electric shock.
● If the machine emits smoke, emits an unusual odor or noise, or
exhibits any other abnormality, or if its external parts become
unusually hot, continued operation of the machine could result in a
fire or electric shock. In such a case, turn OFF ( ) the power switch
immediately, remove the power plug from the outlet, and contact your
dealer.

● Do not operate the machine while purposely pressing any of the

machine's door open/close detection switches. Those detection
switches are designed to work as safety switches. If the switch of an
open door is depressed, the machine will interpret the door as closed
and activate, resulting in possible injury to the user.
● To clean the machine, do not use a spray cleaner containing
combustible substances. A fire may break out.
● Do not drink the water in the water bottle or use it for animal drinking
water.
● When you need to remove a jammed sheet, do not touch the thermal
development section immediately after opening it. As the thermal
development section will be very hot, resulting in possible burns.
● Close the thermal development section carefully (after clearing paper
jams, for example) to avoid catching your hand.
● In case the machine will not be operated for long periods of time, such
as over consecutive holidays, be sure to pull out the power plug from
the current outlet as a safety measure.

IMPORTANT ● To clean the external surfaces of the machine, do not use an organic solvent
such as benzine or paint thinner. Wipe it using water or a neutral solvent.
● Be careful not to allow paper clips, staples, or other foreign articles to fall
inside the machine.
● Do not lean or sit on the machine. Do not place heavy objects on the

8
machine or subject it to shock.
● If a machine part needs to be replaced, use a replacement part 1
recommended by Fujifilm. Use of parts other than those recommended by

Safety Precautions
Fujifilm will invalidate the product warranty.
1.1.2 Precautions on electric shock
● Do not operate the machine on other than the supply voltage
specified. Do not use an extension cord with an insufficient capacity
and do not plug the machine into an outlet to which other loads are
connected. Such actions could result in fire or electric shock.
● Operating this machine from an ungrounded two-conductor outlet
may subject the user to electric shock if a ground fault occurs. This is
because such outlets do not provide a safety ground.
● Be careful not to damage, break, or alter the power cord. Do not place
a heavy object or tug on it, and do not bend it excessively. Such
actions could result in fire or electric shock.
● Do not place a flower vase, plant pot, glass, or any other container
filled with water on the machine. Likewise, do not place metallic
objects on the machine. If water gets inside the machine, it may
cause fire or electric shock.
● Do not touch the power plug with wet hands. You might suffer an
electric shock.

● To pull out the power plug from the outlet, always hold the plug.
Tugging on the power cord could cause the conductor wires to be
exposed or broken, leading to fire or electric shock.

1.1.3 Precautions on installation and relocation

● Do not install the machine in an unstable place, such as on a rickety
base or uneven surface. The machine could topple over, causing
injury to anyone nearby.
● Once the machine is set up, lock the casters. Otherwise, the machine
could move or topple over, causing injury to anyone nearby.
● When the machine is going to be relocated, always remove the power

1.4 Operating Environment

To operate the machine, replace consumables, or perform daily maintenance and checks,
secure enough space as indicated in the figure below.

IMPORTANT ● There is a ventilation hole at the back of the machine. Provide a clearance
of 20 cm or more between the wall and the ventilation hole.

200mm

390mm 430mm

1341mm

580mm

1470mm AO1F002E

To ensure proper operation and safety, install the machine in a place that meets the
environmental conditions described below.

● Temperature: 15 C to 28 C (without condensation).

If the room temperature exceeds 28 C or falls below 15 C, printing quality may be impaired.
Moreover, if the machine is operated at low temperatures, printing or error messages may be
delayed. If the room is chilly and heated up abruptly, condensation may form on the inside of
the machine, causing paper jams or degraded printing quality. Use the machine in a place free
from abrupt temperature variations.

● Humidity: 30% R.H. to 70% R.H. (without condensation).

If the humidity in the room exceeds 70% R.H., the donor and receiver may not be transported
correctly inside the machine, and the receiver may not be sufficiently dry, leading to poor
printing quality. Avoid installing the machine near a water tap, water heater, humidifier, air-
conditioner, space heater, stove, or the like, and be sure to keep the humidity in the room
between 30% R.H. and 70% R.H. at all times.

● Ventilation
Install the machine in a well-ventilated, dust-free location.
IMPORTANT ● In an environment heavily laden with dust, spot faults* are likely to form on
the images.

● Where this machine and its donor and receiver magazines are likely to be exposed to
direct sunlight, the studio electronic flash, or other intense reflected rays, use a curtain
or other shade to shield the machine.
NOTE: ● An intense light may cause "fogging"**.

12
1.5 How to Supply Power

● Set up the machine in a place free from ammonia, formalin, or sulfite gases. If exposed to
such gases, printing quality may be adversely affected and/or rust may form inside the 1
machine.

Safety Precautions
● Install the machine in a place free from inflammable objects, including paint thinners,
alcohol, and the like.

● Set up the machine on a level, stable floor that is not susceptible to vibration and that is
sturdy enough to bear the weight of the machine.
The weight borne by each caster is approximately 20 kg.

13
1.6 Donor and Receiver

* Spot fault: Phenomenon in which numerous white dots appear on the print.
** Fogging: Phenomenon in which prints are discolored because the sensitive material (donor) is affected by leaking or unintended
light.
● Connect the power plug directly to a 3-conductor outlet with ground terminal. The plug
should be rated 220 to 240 VAC – 10 V, 50/60 Hz, 7A or more.

● If the machine is powered via a two-conductor outlet that does not

have a ground terminal, the user may suffer shocks if an electric leak
occurs, since such current outlets do enable the machine to be
grounded.
● Do not operate the machine on other than the supply voltage
specified. Do not use an extension cord with insufficient capacity and
do not power the machine from a current outlet to which other loads
are connected. Doing so could result in fire or electric shock.

● Check the following aspects on a regular basis:

• Whether the power plug is inserted securely in a dedicated outlet.
• Whether the power plug or power cord is generating an unusual amount of heat.
• Whether the power cord has any cracks or nicks.

1.6.3 Storage of donor and receiver

When storing donor and receiver, pay attention to the following:

IMPORTANT ● Store the donor (Magazine D) and receiver (Magazine R) horizontally. If the
magazines are placed vertically, the rolls inside them will slacken, making it

14
impossible to draw them out of the magazines.
1

Safety Precautions
AO1F003E

● If the donor (Magazine D) and receiver (Magazine R) are left in a room for a
long time or exposed to high temperature or high humidity, printing quality
will be adversely affected. Store them in a dark, cool place away from direct
sunlight. If the donor and receiver are going to be stored for over one month,
provide an ambient storage condition of 10 C and 60% R.H. or less.
● The donor (Magazine D) should be opened in a place away from direct
sunlight.
● To maintain print quality, avoid placing the magazine in dusty areas (e.g. the
floor surface) after removing the magazine from the package.
● Once a donor or receiver roll is opened, load it into the magazine promptly. If
Magazine D is left in a bright room for a long time, the donor may be
exposed and become unusable.
● If you open the inner door of the loading section of Magazine D (See "2.1
External View"), the leading end of the doner will be exposed .
● For high printing quality, it is best to use up the donor and receiver within one
month.
● If this machine is going to remain out of service for one week or more,
remove Magazine D and Magazine R from the machine and store them in a
cool, dark place. Also, drain the water bottle completely.
● If Magazine D or R is opened and needs to be stored, slip it into the
protective laminated bag and then place it in the outer box. Then store it in a
cool, dark place with a temperature of 15 C or less.
In this case, you should fasten the leading end of the donor or receiver with a
rubber band to prevent it from being taken into the magazine. Do not fasten
the leading end with a piece of adhesive tape: the adhesive material of the
tape may stick to the inside, causing stains or malfunction.

15

AO1F004E

● If you are going to use a magazine that has been stored under refrigerated
conditions, remove it from the protective bag and use it only after it has
returned to normal temperature so as to prevent condensation from forming
(Leave the magazine outside for about one hour).

NOTES ● Use the donor and receiver before their expiration date.

Serial number and an expiration date

AO1F005E

● If the donor has been replaced or one month has elapsed since it was loaded, the

16
print color or density may change. Execute calibration to compensate for such
changes (See "5.3 Calibration (Standard Color Condition Setup)"). 1
1.6.4 Disposal of refuse (used donor)

Safety Precautions
■ Disposal of refuse (used donor)
Images remain on a refuse (used donor). If those images require the protection of
confidentiality, pass the donor through a shredder and dispose of it as industrial waste.

■ About the refuse

Fujifilm strongly recommends taking advantage of its Reclamation Program to properly
dispose of refuse. By reclaiming the usable materials from this refuse and returning them
to commerce, helps protect the environment and conserve resources.
Please contact your local Fujifilm representative for details on our Reclamation Program.

■ Image Security/Confidentiality
● The refuse retains negative images, which may or not contain confidential information.
Please shred any refuse before returning it to the Fujifilm Reclamation Center if you
believe such refuse may contain confidential information.
● Fujifilm shall not be responsible in any manner for the contents or confidentiality of any
returned refuse.

17
1.7 Prohibitions on Reproduction

1.6.5 Storage conditions for prints

● Store finished prints away from direct sunlight and ultraviolet rays.
● Printed images are affected by a variety of environmental conditions including heat,
moisture, light, and atmospheric pollution. The effects of these conditions on printing
are complex.
The recommended storage conditions for prints are as follows:
• Well-ventilated place at a temperature of 25 C or less and a humidity of 30% R.H. to 60% R.H.
• When stored for a long time, prints should be kept at 10 C or less and from 30% R.H. to 50%
R.H.
● Do not stack prints with the images facing each other. The coloring matter on the images
could be transferred or the prints could stick to each other.

1.6.6 Print guarantees

● The image quality of finished prints is guaranteed for all areas excluding a 5-mm of
margin on all sides.

5mm

5mm AO1F006E

● The last part of a receiver roll has a hole that is used to detect the end of the receiver.
When the receiver is exhausted, the last print from the machine may have a hole in it.
This print is not counted within the guaranteed number of prints.
● The leading end of a roll is not also counted within the guaranteed number of prints.
The possession of a duplication equipment does not entitle one to making duplicates of
anything and everything. There are cases where legal restrictions are enforced.

● There are items whose duplication is prohibited by law. DO NOT

duplicate such items, or make duplicates that may be used for illegal
purposes.
● With materials that are protected by copyrights, you must obtain the
permission of the copyright owner. Reproduction without such
permission constitutes an infringement of law.

43
5.1 Color Adjustments for Pictrography 3500

The Pictrography 3500 provides a color calibration function, a color control function, and a
color-matching function.
To get the best performance out of the Pictrography 3500, make sure you have a good
grasp of each of these functions.

● Calibration
The Auto-Calibrator attached to the machine main body is used to adjust color conditions to ensure
stability(See "5.3 Calibration (Standard Color Condition Setup)").

● Color control
This function matches colors and color density on the monitor to print values. The set values will
vary depending on various monitor adjustments. For example, if the monitor is set somewhat
brighter than normal, an appropriate image as viewed on screen will tend to result in comparatively
dark print, since the corresponding image data created is that of a darker image. In such cases,
use the color control function to increase the brightness of the print to match it to the screen image.
The color control function enables the following adjustments. Several test prints should be made
and necessary adjustments carried out.

● Brightness: Adjusts print brightness (see page 50).

● Contrast: Adjusts the contrast between light and dark regions of the print (see page 51).
● Color balance: Adjusts the print color balance (R-G-B). (see page 51)

IMPORTANT ● Remember that the different adjustment items for color control are
interdependent. Make adjustments by closely observing the overall balance.

● Color matching
Function to match colors and color density of the screen image to those of the print (see page 53).

performance.

AO5T001E

IMPORTANT ● Before making adjustment with the color control function, you must perform a
calibration and confirm that the printer performs properly.
● Use the color control function to produce a specific image in the desired
colors. Restore the original settings once you are done.
● To perform color matching on the monitor, select a sample image that clearly
shows changes in grayscale and color balance. Using an image in which
one color predominates will result in poorly balanced colors in prints of other
images.
● When precise color matching is required, consider the following aspects:
• When temperatures fall significantly overnight, wait at least one hour after
switching ON ( ) the machine before printing.
• Recalibrate if room temperatures shift by 5 C or more.
• To conduct the calibration, wait for one hour or more after switching on the
machine, until the room temperature and the machine's internal
temperature have stabilized sufficiently.
• Take care to ensure that the time elapsed between delivery of a calibration
sheet and the start of the next measurement is held as constant (30 sec or
so) as possible.

45
5.3 Calibration (Standard Color Condition Setup)

The printer itself can be adjusted to provide consistent prints. Perform a calibration

6.2 Replacing Magazine D

● Magazine D contains a rolled donor (sensitive material).

● The trailing end of the donor has a hole designed to detect the end of donor. When the
machine detects this hole, it performs the donor trailing end ejection process described
below.
● When the [DONOR EMPTY] indicator lamp comes on, replace Magazine D.

IMPORTANT ● Replace magazine D with the machine ON ( ). If you replace magazine D

when power is OFF ( ), no leading-end cutoff processing is performed for
the donor, causing the next print to be fogged.
● Never open/close the inner door unless absolutely necessary, since doing so
may expose the first sheet of donor and prevent the machine from outputting
a normal print.
● The print produced when the end of the donor is detected may not constitute
a high-quality image.
● After replacing the donor, perform calibration (condition setup for standard
colors)*. (*: See "5.3 Calibration (Standard Color Condition Setup)".)

NOTE: ● If Magazine D is not installed in the machine, turn ON ( ) the power switch and
begin operations from Step 4.

6.2.1 Donor trailing end ejection

¤ When Magazine D runs out of donor, the
EndProcess AO6F008E
displayed message changes to
"EndProcess" and the machine begins to
eject the donor trailing end for about 7
minutes.

¤ Once the trailing end has been ejected, a

Warning "Warning" message is displayed and the
[DONOR EMPTY] indicator lamp comes
on. The buzzer will repeatedly emit a
"beep-beep-beep-beep" sound.
Replace Magazine D by following the
procedure detailed in "6.2.2 Replacing
Magazine D".

stop flashing and either go off or remain
on continuously.

62
6.3 Replacing Magazine R

● Magazine R contains a rolled receiver.

● The trailing end of the receiver has a hole designed to detect the receiver’s end. When
the machine detects this hole, it ejects the receiver trailing end as described below.
● When the [PAPER EMPTY] indicator lamp comes on, replace Magazine R.

IMPORTANT ● Replace Magazine R while the power is ON ( ). If it is replaced while the

power is OFF ( ), the machine will not cut off the receiver leading end.
● Before changing Magazine R, make sure that the [PROCESS] indicator lamp
is not flashing.
● When the message indicating that Magazine R needs to be replaced
appears, subsequent prints from the machine may not be of the specified
size or may suffer from poor image quality.
● When handling Magazine R, be careful not to soil the receiver.

NOTE: ● If Magazine R is not installed, turn ON ( ) the power switch and start at Step 2.

● If the [WATER CHANGE] indicator lamp comes on, change the water.
● If the water level in the water bottle drops due to evaporation, or if the machine does not
have a water bottle installed, the message display will change to "CheckWaterTank" and
the [WATER CHANGE] indicator lamp will flash.

IMPORTANT ● You should generally change the water in the bottle once a week. If the
water is changed less often, unpleasant odors may be generated and the
print image quality (whiteness) may be degraded.
● Use distilled or deionized water (but not well water) at a temperature from
20 C to 40 C. If the water temperature is lower than 20 C, it will take longer
for printing to begin, but this does not indicate a malfunction.
● If the machine is not going to be operated for a period of one week or more,
drain the water bottle.
● Always change the water while the power is ON ( ). Changing the water
while the power is OFF ( ) will not clear the "Warning" indication.

¤ If a week elapses since the last time the

Warning water was replaced and nearly 150
papers in A4 size printed, a "Warning"
message will be displayed, the [WATER
CHANGE] indicator lamp will come on,
and the buzzer will make a "beep-beep-

8.1 About Handling Paper Jams

● If the donor or receiver do not feed through properly during print operations, the
machine's transport mechanism will stop and the following indications will be given:
• The message indication section on the operation panel will indicate that there is a paper jam.
• Numbers or letters will flash in the message indication section, indicating the location of the
paper jam.
• The buzzer will repeatedly emit a "beep-beep-beep-beep" sound (Opening a door silences
the buzzer sound). However, notice that the buzzer sound will not be deactivated if Buzzer
Sound Off was chosen under "Configuration".
● Open the front door and remove the jammed donor or receiver by following the
procedure given below.

¤ In case a paper jam occurs, the message

JXX 123456789DR display area will produce the following
indication:
● The error code of the paper jam
appears as "XX" in a message "JXX".
● The location of the paper jam is
indicated by blinking numbers and
letters.

¤ The numbers and letters correspond to

● If smoke is emitted during a paper jam, there is a danger of fire or

electric shock. Turn OFF ( ) the power switch immediately, pull out
the power plug from the current outlet, and contact your dealer.

IMPORTANT ● Remove the jammed donor or receiver with care, ensuring that it does not
break or tear. If it tears, remove all fragments from the machine.
● After removing the jammed sheet, close all the doors. The machine will not
prepare for printing if any of the doors is not closed properly. Moreover, if
any doors are left open for a long time, the donor may be exposed and dust
may get inside the machine.
● Do not open the inner door unless absolutely necessary. The leading end of
the donor could be exposed.
● If Magazine D or Magazine R is removed when handling a paper jam, the
machine will automatically cut the unusable portion off the leading end of the
donor or receiver and eject it after the jam has been cleared.

* Printing does not occur within the 4-mm-wide area along the periphery of the image data.
* The "Borderless" setting is not provided for special sizes.

The maximum number of pixels for each size that can be printed on the Pictrography 3500 can be
calculated from the following equations:
X = (Effective Image Size X mm) x (dpi-value)/25.4
Y = (Effective Image Size Y mm) x (dpi-value)/25.4
