WILLIAM BANTING DIET 1862

At age 66 years, with 5’5’’ height with more than 200


pounds (around 100 KG) after the retirement he started his
diet journey.
British journal called him as the “Notorious man of
Corpulence”
No family history of obesity. Not lazy. Not foody.
But his obesity started in his 30+ years.
Then he increased his exercise.
But weight increased further with icreased hunger.
He tried walking, horse riding, manual labour.
But his weight increased further.
He tried purgatives and diuretics.
But his weight increased further.
His life turned when he met Dr. William Harvey, an aural
surgeon (Ear surgeon).
Earlier, Dr. Harvery attended a lecture of Dr. Claude
Bernard, Physiologist on diabetes.

Dr, Harvey prescribed the Dr. Bernard’s diabetic diet to
“William Banting”.
Banting started his diet in Aug 1862.
Diet: 3 meals a day. Meat / fish / or game.
Each time 5/- ounces of food. i.e 150-160 grams with 1or 2
ounces stale bread or cooked fruit on the side for munching.
He had his evening tea with a few more ounces of bread
or fruit.
Avoided bread, milk, beer, sweets, potatoes, and other
carb food.
Taken 4 or 5 glasses of wine each day in the morning.
A tumbler of gin or whisky or brandy in the evening.
Banting reduced 35 pounds or 16 KG by May 1863 i.e. in
10 months.
He reduced by 50 pounds or 23 KG by Jan 1864 i.e in one
and half year.
He cured his obesity and all other related issues in the body.
He published a pamphlet or mini book with 16 pages in
1863 by the name “Letter on Corpulence – Addressed to the
Public” in the England.
Later his book translated and sold in USA, Germany,
Austria and France.
British Medical journal wrote” The Emperor of French
trying the Banting system and he is benefitting”
In 1864, the name Banting had entered the English language as
a verb with the meaning “Diet”
In 1965, Pall Mall Gazette published “If any one is gouty, obese
and nervous, we strongly recommend him to do bant (Diet).
