7. Definitions:
Visual Inspections:
All parts are subjected to visual inspections. Visual inspection are surface discontinuity
which can be observed without magnification or aid, which may indicate the presence of
surface flaws.
1. Dents:
An impression on surface of the part, which is shallow, compared to its minimum surface
dimensions and has smooth edge and rounded bottom such imprint of the still ball.
2. Scratches:
A shallow, narrow appearances on the surface as a caused by a sharp object moving lightly
along the surface.
3. Nicks:
A gouged depression with steep side “V” impression in the bottom such as imprint made by a
sharp object, not interrupted as a crack or is crack like.
4. Discoloration:
A noticeable changes in color from the adjacent area of the surface. The Discoloration may
be the result one or more of the following,
a. A defect, such as a material flow
b. A previous process
c. Contaminations, such as corrosion or Dirt.
5. Corrosion:
The metal surface are oxidized, damaging the entire surface due to the environmental
condition like Humidity
Pitting corrosion occurs when the cathode (damaged coating) is large and the anode
(exposed metal) is small.
6. Burrs:
A burr is a raised edge or small piece of material that remains attached to a workpiece after
a machining process. It is usually an unwanted piece of metal.
6. Procedure:
1. Visual inspection of an Inside & Outside surface including to detect apparent visual
imperfections such as a pit marks, Blow holes, pin holes, dents, cuts FOD’s and other
visually detected imperfection.
2. Burrs, other edges to be checked for deburring as per drawing and customer part
quality requirements.
3. Internal surface examination shall cover entire inside surface can be adequately
examined by the inspector using light source.
4. All threading should be cleaned thoroughly ensuring that no threading burr, dirt or
cleaning materials on the threads.
5. For Long bore or hole & interconnected holes inspection should be use borescope.
6. Inspect for imperfections on the face, chamfer, Internal & external threads. Use thread
gauge to detect machining errors.
7. Mark all imperfections located on the ID, OD and surfaces shall be evaluated with
whatever inspection tool that gives best determination of actual cause.
8. Visual inspection of the parts to be inspected and assessed by comparing with master
part accepted by Customer.
Examples:
1. Burrs:
2. Dents:
3. Corrosion:
4. Pit marks:
5. Nicks:
