THE SPECTRUM OF A q-DIFFERENCE OPERATOR

Martin Bohner

Missouri S & T, Rolla, USA

E-mail: bohner@mst.edu

Abstract
This talk reports on the three papers [1, 2, 3] related to the spectrum of a
certain q-difference operator. For a number q bigger than one, we consider a q-
difference version of a second-order singular differential operator which depends on
a real parameter. We give three exact parameter intervals in which the operator
is semibounded from above, not semibounded, and semibounded from below, re-
spectively. We also provide two exact pararameter sets in which the operator is
symmetric and self adjoint, respectively. Our model exhibits a more complex be-
haviour than in the classical continuous case but reduces to it when q approaches
one. For values of the parameter for which the difference operator is self adjoint, we
show that the spectrum of the operator is discrete and simple. When q approaches
1, the spectrum fills the whole positive or negative semiaxis.

Abstract
The most studied systems of fuzzy relation equations and inequalities were
linear systems. Recently, more complex non-linear systems, called homogeneous
weakly linear systems, have been introduced in [4]. These systems are composed
of fuzzy relations on a single set, and a method for computing their greatest solu-
tions has been provided. This method is based on the computing of the greatest
post-fixed point, contained in a given fuzzy relation, of an isotone function on the
lattice of fuzzy relations. The heterogeneous weakly linear systems of fuzzy relation
inequalities and equations were studied in [5]. These systems are composed of fuzzy
relations on two possible different sets, and an unknown is a fuzzy relation between
these two sets. The iterative method developed in [4] is adapted for computing the
greatest solutions of heterogeneous weakly linear systems, and relationships between
solutions to heterogeneous and homogeneous weakly linear systems is established.
Fuzzy relation equations and inequalities have been very successfully employed in
the study of simulation, bisimulation and equivalence of fuzzy automata [1, 2]. Also,
the techniques developed within theory of fuzzy relations can be modified and ap-
plied for computing the greatest solutions to the systems of multivalued relations
over max-plus algebra [3].
Here we give a brief overview of the main results concerning fuzzy relation
equations and inequalities, and theirs applications.

ON NEW NOTION OF COMPACTNESS IN FUNCTION SPACES

Xenofon Dimitriou

Department of Mathematics, University of Athens

E-mail: dxenof@math.uoa.gr, xenofon11@gmail.com

Abstract
The continuity of the limit function was an open problem to mathematicians
over the past two centuries. C. Weierstrass (1860) was the first to introduce the
notion of uniform convergence and obtained the following result: the limit function
is continuous if it is the uniform limit of a sequence of continuous functions.
Later on, C. Arzela (1884) showed that under a property (which we now call
Arzela property) the limit function of a sequence of continuous functions is contin-
uous. This type of convergence (now called Arzela convergence) is strictly weaker
than uniform convergence.
In this talk we study deeper the Arzela convergence and some of its variants
thus defining new types of convergence of function sequences.

A WHITEHEADIAN-TYPE DESCRIPTION
OF EUCLIDEAN SPACES, SPHERES,
TORI AND TYCHONOFF CUBES

Georgi D. Dimov

Dept. of Math. and Informatics, Sofia University,

5 J. Bourchier Blvd., 1164 Sofia, Bulgaria

Abstract
In the beginning of the 20th century, A. N. Whitehead [5, 6] and T. de Laguna
[1] proposed a new theory of space, known as region-based theory of space. They did
not present their ideas in a detailed mathematical form.
In 1997, P. Roeper [4] has shown that the locally compact Hausdorff spaces cor-
respond bijectively (up to homeomorphism and isomorphism) to some algebraical
objects which represent correctly Whitehead’s ideas of regions and contact rela-
tion, generalizing in this way a previous analogous result of de Vries [2] concerning
compact Hausdorff spaces (note that even a duality for the category of compact
Hausdorff spaces and continuous maps was constructed by de Vries [2]). Recently, a
duality for the category of locally compact Hausdorff spaces and continuous maps,
based on Roeper’s results, was obtained in [3] (it extends de Vries’ duality mentioned
above). In this talk, using the dualities obtained in [2, 3], we will construct directly
(i.e. without the help of the corresponding topological spaces) the dual objects
of Euclidean spaces, spheres, tori and Tychonoff cubes; these algebraical objects
completely characterize the mentioned topological spaces. Thus, a mathematical
realization of the original philosophical ideas of Whitehead [5, 6] and de Laguna [1]
about Euclidean spaces will be obtained.

Abstract
In this paper a study of fuzzy relations is presented. In the first section, related
notions, notations and properties connected with the relations, lattices, continuous
t-norms and residuated lattices (Heyting algebra) are introduced. The main section
of this work deals with the fuzzy relations and associated indicators, where several
indicators of fuzzy relations on residuated lattices are defined, corresponding to the
reflexivity, transitivity, and other relational properties. These indicators represent
a degree and measure the extent to which the fuzzy relation has some property.

Keywords. Relations, lattice, residuated lattice, fuzzy sets, fuzzy relations, indi-
cators of fuzzy relations.

ATTACK ON SMALL PUBLIC RSA EXPONENT

Bernadin Ibrahimpašić

Abstract
RSA public – key cryptosystem is the most popular form of public – key
cryptography. In order to make encryption more efficient, one can use a small
public exponent e. The smallest possible value, and one commonly used, is e = 3,
which requires only one modular multiplication and one modular squaring. It is
known that sending the same message to three different entities allows recovery of
the plain text. In this paper we show how a plain text message can be recovered
if it is enciphered with public exponent e > 3 and sent to three different entities
having pairwise relatively prime moduli (i = 1, 2, 3). We use Chinese Remainder
Theorem. CRT is the method for solving systems of linear congruences. CRT is
very applicable in several areas of mathematics and computing science, including
algebra, number theory and cryptography.

Keywords. Cryptography, Chinese Remainder Theorem, RSA.

ON SOME CATEGORIES ARISING IN THE THEORY

OF LOCALLY COMPACT EXTENSIONS

G. Dimov and E. Ivanova

Abstract
In 1967, S. Leader ([4]) described the ordered set of all (up to equivalence)
locally compact Hausdorff extensions of Tychonoff spaces using the notion of sep-
arated local proximity in which the boundedness and proximity are both primitive
terms. Some other descriptions of the locally compact extensions were given by V.
Zaharov ([5], [6]) (by means of some special vector lattices of functions), by G. Di-
mov and D. Doitchinov ([2]) (on the basis of the notion of supertopological space),
by Dimov ([1]) (using the notion of LC-proximities) and recently by G. Dimov and
D. Vakarelov ([3]) – a purely proximity-type description by means of the socalled lc-
proximities. In all these theories, a description of the class of functions which have
a continuous extension over corresponding locally compact extensions was given.
Therefore, some categories arise in this way whose objects are the corresponding
structures and whose morphisms are the classes of functions just mentioned. It is
clear that these categories must be at least equivalent. We show that in fact they
are isomorphic (this is done for the categories arising from the descriptions given
by Leader ([4]), Dimov and Doitchinov ([2]) and Dimov ([1])), and the proof is an
internal one, i.e. the locally compact extensions are not used in it. Surprisingly, the
proof found by us is not easy. In the course of it we had to generalize some basic
statements from the theory of Efremovich proximities to the case of local proximity
spaces. The isomorphism between the categories of Leader ([4]) and Dimov and
Vakarelov ([3]) was proved in [3]. We do not discuss here the theory of Zaharov.

Abstract
A metric space (X, d) is called pseudo-totally bounded if every real- valued
uniformly continuous function on (X, d) is bounded. Every totally bounded metric
space is pseudo-totally bounded, while every pseudo-totally bounded metric space
is bounded. But the converses need not be true, that is, a pseudo-totally bounded
metric space need not be totally bounded, and a bounded metric space need not
be pseudo-totally bounded. In this talk, we discuss several equivalent characteriza-
tions of pseudo-totally bounded metric spaces. In particular, we talk about a new
sequential characterization of pseudo-totally bounded metric spaces.

Abstract
A small portion of the theory of semigroups with apartness from a constructive
algebra point of view will be given. The focus is on E. Bishop’s approach, [1], to
constructive mathematics (BISH) ([3, 4]). Proving a constructive version of the
Spectral Mapping Theorem D. Bridges and R. Havea, [2], used constructive semi-
group with inequality. This motivate us to give a little progress in that direction.
The starting point is the structure (S, =, 6=, · ) called a semigroup with apartness.
Our primary objective is to prove isomorphism theorems for such constructive semi-
groups.

WINTGEN IDEAL SUBMANIFOLDS

Abstract
For all submanifolds M n of real space forms M̃ n+m (c), with constant sectional
curvature c, for all dimension n ≥ 2 and all co-dimension m ≥ 1, the so-called Wint-
gen inequality asserts that ρ ≤ H 2 −ρ⊥ +c, whereby ρ is normalised scalar curvature
of the Riemannian manifold M n (which is an intinsinc inariant), and whereby A2
and ρ⊥ are the squared mean curvature and normalised normal scalar curvature
of M n in the ambient space M̃ n+m , respectively (which are extrinsic invariants).
Submanifolds which satisfy the equality in this optimal “soft” inequality are called
Wintgen ideal submanifolds.
