A Friend Indeed

Below is a situation that needs your attention and response. As a good friend, what
could be your response to each situation? Ponder on these and realize the importance of
friendship and compassion in every situation.

Situation 1: As you entered the library, you have noticed your friend sitting alone
in a corner, crying. As you comfort her, you happen to know that she and her
mother has a big fight. What could be your advice?

Situation 2: Tomorrow will be your periodic test. You saw your friends going to the computer
shop instead of studying. What could be your advice to your friends?

In the above situations, it is imperative in our nature as persons to be compassionate

and emphatic especially when we want to make our relationships stronger. We give firm pieces
of advice and suggestions to our friends especially when we feel that they really need some.

INTRODUCTION

When we communicate tactfully, we can preserve relationships, build credibility, and

demonstrate thoughtfulness. Being tactful and careful in communication is important when you
have to deliver bad news or provide critical feedback, whether in a personal or professional
situation. Moreover, it strengthens your reputation and allows you to preserve existing
relationships and build new ones. It can therefore be an important asset in negotiations and in
conflict resolution.

This lesson will help you increase interpersonal skills and language adeptness. Carry on
with enthusiasm.

RING-A-BELL

Take time to reflect on these questions as you go on with the lesson. Enjoy!
1. Why is it important to say the right things at the right time?
2. What is the importance of being decisive in coming up with a better
decision-making ability?

MODALS
(The Condiments of English)
What is a modal?

 A modal verb is a type of verb that is used to indicate

modality – that is: likelihood, ability, permission,
request, capacity, suggestions, order, obligation, or
advice.

List of Modal Verbs (Modals)

 Can  Will
 Could  Would
 May  Shall
 Might  Should
 Must  Ought to

Modal verbs are, essentially, auxiliary verbs, or helping verbs, as they’re also called.
However, perhaps the best way to think of modal verbs is as verbs that modify the meaning of
the main verb.

Modal verbs are really easy to use, as we’ll see later on, and when you learn how to use
them properly, you’ll enter a whole new world of language use. You’ll be able to express more
meaning more easily, and isn’t that great?

IMPORTANCE OF MODALS
Do I have to use modal verbs?

Modal verbs open up a whole new way of speaking and writing with their ability to
quickly change the meaning of a verb and a sentence. Why should I use modal verbs?

 Easy - They’re really easy to use and you’d be missing out by not taking advantage of
such a favorable linguistic opportunity.
 Meaning - By using modal verbs, you’re able to express nuances in meaning that you
wouldn’t be able to otherwise.
 Politeness - Finally, some modal verbs are “polite”, meaning that you’ll sound more
polite when you use them to ask questions or propose suggestions, which is important
when speaking a foreign language.

TAKEAWAY
“It is always a much easier task to educate uneducated people than to re-
educate the mis-educated.” ― Herbert M. Shelton

The goal of educating is not only to spread awareness but also to

share insights that can help improve man’s understanding of a lot of things.
While it is true that it is better to educate the uneducated, it is not safe to say
that to re-educate the miseducated is impossible. Herbet Shelton pronounced
this quote because an uneducated person is someone who believes the things
with much curiosity. He who educates people is sharing love, care, and kindness
to everyone.

TAKEAWAY
“In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right
thing.”

Every decision you make, from your choices to how you respond to the
circumstances of your life shapes your destiny and how your life will turn out.

A decision you make today could affect your life tomorrow, a week from now or 10
years now. Destiny is the ripple effect of every decision you make over a lifetime. Life is full of
choices. Some are easy, such as what to have for dinner (cheeseburger thank you), and
others, more serious, like, for instance, choosing a career. Regardless of how important a
decision is, good decision skills are useful in life, especially if you feel indecisive about
something and it’s getting you down. Get tips on how to make good decisions and find out
what to do when you can’t figure out a plan.

Ma’am Xyza’s Notes

o Crucially, modals and other hedges and indirect speech

are commonly used by all of us to indicate a kind of
cooperative politeness and reduce face threatening
acts (as well as for other purposes, such as when one is
unsure or trying to avoid saying something).
o Models are auxiliary verbs that are used in English
language to show certain functionalities like showing
possibility, certainty or ability making a request or an inquiry. Can, could, may as
well as might, should, would are considered as some of the major modal verbs
that are used in English grammar.

Generalization

Modality is about a speaker's or a writer's attitude towards the world. A speaker or

writer can express certainty, possibility, willingness, obligation, necessity and ability by using
modal words and expressions. Speakers often have different opinions about the same thing.
These speakers are looking at the same thing.

Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs, also known as “helping” verbs. These auxiliary verbs
help change the meaning of main verbs to express a variety of things, such as: ability,
possibility, obligation, necessity, etc. Modal verbs help when speaking about ability, making
requests and offers, asking permission, and more. The modal verbs in English differ from other
verbs because they are not used separately, and do not indicate a specific action or state, they
just reflect its modality, the attitude of the speaker to the action.

Maintain the Louisian smile as you carry on with the task expected of you to accomplish.
God speed!
