ABSTRACT

Drug addiction is a serious global issue causing millions of deaths and contributing to the spread of
diseases like HIV. India is experiencing a rising trend in drug abuse, with alcohol being the most
common followed by cannabis and opiates. Men are more likely to use drugs, but the impact on
women is often greater due to limited access to care. Drug abuse leads to various health problems,
economic burdens, family issues, and violence. Adolescents are especially vulnerable, with over
half of those with substance use disorders starting before age 15. There's a significant gap in service
delivery, highlighting the need for proper management through treatment and prevention efforts.

We're planning to use a Google Form to ask some questions and also visit a rehab center to talk to
people there. We want to help them see that there are better ways than addiction. After we collect all
the info, we'll share it with a counseling person who can use it to help others in the future. To make
it happen, we'll create a simple survey online and visit the rehabilitation center with permission.
We'll talk to people there to understand their experiences with addiction and how the rehab center
helps. We promise to keep everything private and won't share any personal details. Once we have
all the information, we'll give it to a counseling professional. They can use it to figure out how to
help people better in the future. We want to make sure everyone knows there are good options out
there.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION
1.1 Introduction

Adolescence is a period of transition from childhood into adulthood. It is a period of physical,

psychological and social maturation. This is a crucial phase in one’s life where an individual is no
longer a child but not yet achieved adulthood. Young persons in the age group of 10 to 15 are
usually referred as adolescents. Adolescents in the age group of 15 to 20 are referred as early
adolescents and those in the age group of 20 to 25S are treated as late adolescents. also they lack
the mental capacity to truly understand the consequences of their action. Young people start their
substance abuse with cigarettes and alcohol, which are referred as ‘Gateway Substances’. Drug
abuse has been showing rising trend during these days. Objectives of the research study are to find
out the reasons and consequences of drug abuse prevailing in adolescents. The details of the
accused and addicted adolescents who involved in NDPS cases and availed treatment in de
addiction centers respectively during the year 2020.

1.2 Scope
The scope of our initiative involves collecting data on individuals to analyze the challenges they are
facing and identify their specific needs in relation to addiction. This data collection will enable us to
offer tailored guidance, personalized suggestions, and motivation to help individuals avoid or
overcome addiction. The scope encompasses a comprehensive understanding of each person's
situation, allowing for the development of specific and effective interventions. Our goal is not only
to provide immediate support but also to establish a framework for ongoing assistance and
motivation. The scope holistic approach to address the unique requirements of each individual and
contribute to their long-term well-being by steering them away from the path of addiction.

1.3 Objectives
1.Identify high-risk populations for drug addiction through demographic analysis.
2. Develop a predictive model to anticipate relapses in individuals recovering from addiction.
3. Analyze socioeconomic and geographic factors to understand regional patterns of addiction.
4. Assess the effectiveness of various treatments and create an early detection system.
5. Investigate genetic influences, integrate insights with electronic health records, and contribute to
public awareness campaigns.

1.3 Problem Statement

Understanding and tackling drug addiction involves looking at who is affected, why people start
using drugs, and how well prevention programs work. We need to check the types of drugs people
use and patterns of use, as well as how mental health is connected. Access to treatment and its
impact on society and individuals' lives is important, along with figuring out the best ways to help
people recover and avoid going back to drug use. Considering how genes and the environment play
a role, exploring new technologies, and reviewing existing policies are also vital. Finally, we must
look at the long-term effects of drug use on people's health. This approach helps create effective
solutions and support systems for those dealing with drug addiction.

1.4 In Global Scenario

In 2019, drug use led to nearly half a million deaths, with 18 million years of healthy life lost due to
drug use disorders, mainly from opioids. People who inject drugs often face serious illnesses like
HIV and Hepatitis C. The illegal drug trade hampers social and economic progress, affecting
vulnerable communities and threatening security. Despite known dangers, drug use is increasing
globally, expected to rise by 11% by 2030 and up to 40% in Africa. Public perception often doesn't
match actual risks; for instance, cannabis potency has risen, but many teens don't see it as harmful.
The COVID-19 pandemic intensified issues, pushing more people into extreme poverty and making
drug access easier, particularly online. Communicating facts and science-based interventions is
crucial to reducing drug demand and supply and providing proper care for those with drug use
disorders.

1.5 Indian Context

Drug abuse is a growing issue in India, with an increasing number of addicts, especially to heroin.
Officially, one million heroin addicts are registered, but unofficially there could be as many as five
million. It started with high-income youth in cities, but now it affects all parts of society. The use
of heroin has shifted from inhaling to injecting, often combined with other drugs, making addiction
more intense and recovery harder. Cannabis, heroin, and pharmaceutical drugs are commonly
abused. The reasons behind drug abuse are complex, involving social, cultural, biological, and
economic factors. It leads to a rise in crime, affecting the financial stability and emotional well-
being of families. Adolescent drug abuse is a major concern, and its impact on health and society is
substantial, with variations across different regions in India. The government has taken measures
to combat drug trafficking and abuse, threatening stability at national and international levels.

LITERATURE REVIEW

A literature review is an in-depth synopsis of earlier studies on a certain subject. By

providing background knowledge and outlining what is known and what is still unknown, it aids in
the development of new research.

LITERATURE SURVEY

➢ Dr.Lalitha.K (2021):
2. Use and abuse of drugs and alcohol by teens is very common and can have serious
consequences. Possible stages of teenage experience with substance abuse include abstinence
(non-use), experimentation, regular use (both recreational and compensatory for other
problems), abuse, and dependency. Repeated and regular recreational use can lead to other
problems like anxiety, depression. Some teenagers regularly use drugs or alcohol to compensate
for anxiety, depression, or a lack of positive social skills. Teen use of tobacco and alcohol
should be minimized because they can be “gate way drugs” for other drugs (marijuana, cocaine,
hallucinogens, inhalants, and heroin)

Raekha Prasad, 2019

Reports the increasing production, distribution, and promotion of alcohol has already seen drink-related
problems emerging as a major public-health concern in India. Sales of alcohol have seen a growth rate of
8% in the past 3 years. Officially, Indians are still among the world's lowest consumers of alcohol-
government statistics show only 21% of adult men and around 2% of women drink. But up to a fifth of
this group-about 14 million people-are dependent drinkers requiring “help”. The concern, say experts, is
that there has been a rapid change in patterns and trends of alcohol use in India. Chief among them is
people are beginning to drink at ever-younger ages. The percentage of the drinking population aged less
than 21 years has increased from 2% to more than 14% in the past 15 years, according to studies in the
southern state of Kerala by Alcohol and Drugs Information Centre India, a non-governmental
organization (NGO). Alarmingly, the study found that the “average age of initiation” had dropped from
19 years to 13 years in the past two decades. (Gaidhane AM and others, 2008) Almost three‐quarter (70
%) of all substance users wanted to quit and about 40% had tried to quit but cannot, due to the associated
causes of substance abuse.

2. Childline India Foundation(2020):

This study showed the most common reasons for substance abuse of street children was peer
pressure (62.1%), experimentation (36.3%) and to boost self‐ confidence (28.7%). Various
Indian Foundations states that children abuse substances for several reasons, from curiosity,
recreation to coping with stress as personal factors, however drug abuse and addiction lead to a
complex set of social, medical and economic problems.(Karimzadeh Ali, Ziaaddini Hasan,
NakhaeeNouzar, 2019) conducted a study to assess the prevalence of drug abuse among
teenagers in Kerman. A randomly selected sample of652 first and second-grade high school
students (256 boys, 396 girls). They were informed that their answers would be classified and
nameless before they fill questionnaires. Schools and classes were selected using a stratified
sampling method. From the total of 652 students participated in this study, 39.2% (256) were
boys and 60.7% (396) (21.4%). The results of this study indicated dangerously increase of drug
abuse amongteenagers.

3. Elnager et al (2020):
4. Reported a prevalence rate of 13 per 1000 in West Bengal, while Nandi et al gave a figure of
0.94 per 1000 of the total population for the same state. Similarly, in Uttar Pradesh, Dube and
Handa reported that 22.8 per 1000 were dependent on alcohol and drugs while Thacore from
Lucknow gave a figure of 18.55 per 1000. An important finding of these studies is that
alcohol was the commonest substance used (60-98%) followed by cannabis use (4-20%).
Epidemiological surveys also revealed that 20-40% of subjects above 15 years are current
users of alcohol and 10%

4.Kays NS, Torabi M, Perera, B, 2021)

Conducted study that examines the prevalence of alcohol use, alcohol related problems,
psychological distress, anxiety and depression, mood and the relationship between these
variables in a sample of 534 college students in INDIA. In college men, 91% were current
alcohol users(those who use alcohol at least once a month) and in college women 80%were
current alcohol users. Current users were further divided two groups, moderate and heavy,
considering the amount and frequency of alcohol use. Beer was more popular among moderate
users than heavy users in both sexes. Blackouts, getting into fights and not being able to meet
school responsibilities were the common alcohol-related adverse outcomes reported by the
participants.

Gaps Identified:

Identifying gaps in the analysis of drug addiction using Python involves recognizing key areas
where current approaches may fall short. Challenges include limited access to high-quality,
diverse datasets, the need for more robust and generalizable machine learning models, and a
lack of transparency in model decision-making. Integrating multi-modal data, exploring
temporal patterns, and ensuring ethical considerations are central to the analysis. Additionally,
there's a call for increased user engagement, particularly with healthcare professionals and
communities affected by addiction, to tailor interventions effectively. Addressing these gaps
necessitates a collaborative effort, combining expertise from data science, healthcare, ethics,
and community engagement, to develop more insightful, transparent, and actionable solutions
for understanding and combating drug addiction using Python.

Proposed system :

The proposed system for drug addiction analysis aims to create a comprehensive platform
integrating data from healthcare records, social services, and community sources while
prioritizing data privacy. Advanced machine learning models will predict addiction risk
factors, and a user-friendly interface will provide accessible insights for healthcare
professionals and policymakers. Real-time monitoring features will track evolving patterns,
triggering alerts for stakeholders. The goal is to offer an efficient, transparent, and user-centric
tool for understanding and addressing drug addiction through advanced data analysis in a real-
world context.

Advantages of proposed system:

The drug addiction analysis system has some cool benefits. It gathers information from healthcare,
social services, and the community, giving a full picture of addiction trends. The stats help us see
patterns and make smart decisions. Talking to the community helps us understand things better, and
educational stuff spreads awareness. There's also a hotline for quick help, making it easier for people
who need assistance. Basically, this system helps us deal with drug addiction by using data, talking to
people, and spreading knowledge.
