LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

QUARTER 3 – WEEK 7
CLASSIFICATION/ TAXONOMY

Objective: Explain how the structural and developmental characteristics and relatedness of
DNA sequences are used in classifying living things.

Lesson Overview: In order to study living thing in an organized and efficient way, biologist find
it necessary to classify or group organism in a logical way. The most common basis for
classifying organism in similarities in structure or characteristic (anatomy) lately, they group
organism according to their evolutionary relationship (phylogeny) using biochemical and
genetic similarities.

Activity 1 Where you belong?

Procedure: Examine the table showing the classification of four organism and then answer the question.

Taxon House Cat Mountain Lion Domestic Dog Human

Domain Eukarya Eukarya Eukarya Eukarya
Kingdom Animalia Animalia Animalia Animalia
Phylum Chordata Chordata Chordata Chordata
Class Mammalia Mammalia Mammalia Mammalia
Order Carnivora Carnivora Carnivora Primates
Family Felidae Felidae Canidae Hominidae
Genus Felis Felis Canis Homo
Species domesticus concolor familiaris sapiens
Guide Questions:

1. Which two organisms are most closely related?

______________________________________________________________________________
2. What four taxa do all four organisms have in common?
______________________________________________________________________________
3. Which taxon includes organisms that have hair or fur and produce milk?
______________________________________________________________________________
4. Which taxon includes animals with notochord and dorsal nerve cord?
______________________________________________________________________________
5. Write the scientific name for each of the organisms above
House cat ________________________
Mountain Lion ________________________
Domestic Dog ________________________
Human ________________________
6. Of the following, the most closely related groups of organisms are known as:
Genus Species
7. Modern classification is based on evolutionary relationship common ancestry.
8. The member of a family do do not have more in common than do the member of an
order.
9. The member of the phylum do do not have more in common than do the member of a
class.
10. Classification of organism based on their evolutionary relationship is called:
cladistic phylogeny
