WHAT IS DISASTER ?

A disaster is a serious problem


occurring over a period of time
that causes widespread human,
material, economic or
environmental loss which
exceeds the ability of the
affected community or society
to cope using its own resources.
Classification of Disaster
What is Disaster Management ?

Disaster Management can be defined


as organization and management of
resources and responsibilities for
dealing with humanitarian aspects of
emergencies in particular
preparedness, response and recovery
in order to lessen the impact of
disaster.
Principles of disaster
Management
★ Disaster management is the
responsibility of all spheres of
government.
★ Disaster management should use
resources that exist for a day-to-day
purpose.
★ Organization should function as
an extinction of their core business
★ Individuals are responsible for
their own safety .
★ Disaster management planning
should focus on large-scale events.
Tsunami
★ Tsunami is a Japanese word in
which ‘Tsu’ means ‘harbour’ and
‘nami’ means ‘waves’.
★ They are called tidal waves but
they have actually nothing to do
with the tides. However, their
appearance from shore is similar
to rapidly rising or falling tides.
★ It is a gravity wave system,
triggered by vertical disturbances
in oceans. They are long waves
sometimes with hundreds of
miles between their crests.
Causes Of Tsunami

Effects of Tsunami
★ Hitting the shoreline.
★ It may spread diseases.
★ High food cost.
★ Loss of human and animal life;
increasing instant death, injury, illness.
★ Loss of livelihood.
★ A permanent change to the landscape.
★ Devastating property damage.
★ Contamination of soil and water.
★ Severe flooding causes to damages the
drain system.

★ Early warning system for tsunamis.

★ Knowing how to deal with the aftermath of a


tsunami is important. Additional severe
activity may follow initial quakes and early
waves so remain at a higher elevation until the
tsunami threat has completely passed.
★ Avoid wading or driving in flood water.
★ Be aware of the risk of electrocution.
★ Inspect damage.
★ Check your water and food supplies.
★ Document property damage with
photographs. Conduct an inventory and
contact your insurance company for
assistance.
