4.1.2. Cascading

This option requires the I/O board option

The RS-485 interface allows up to 10 generators to be operated in parallel mode. The generators
are connected with an external no return valve to a gas line. The pressure must be controlled with
an external pressure regulator. The outlet pressure is fixed to 10.3 bars. This mode allows up to
10 generators in a cascading group.

How does cascading work?

The communication between the generators is done via the RS-485 Interface. For a correct
communication, each generator needs a unique ID number. Each generator must know how many
generators are connected in the cascading group. As soon as the generators are powered up, one
generator becomes the master, and controls the others (slaves). If there is a problem with the
master, one of the slave generators will become the master.
Every generator can be forced to be the master, in the menu you will find the function “force to
master”, just select this function and acknowledge.
When a generator is the master, the letter “M” is displayed in the menu, whilst the slaves show
the letter “S”.

5.7 SCHEMATICS

5.7.1. Fluidics

The FID-T NM PLUS generator produces pure Hydrogen (and Oxygen as a by-product) through
the electrolysis of water. The key element of the generator is an electrochemical cell assembly
which contains a solid polymer electrolyte. No free acids or alkaline are used. Deionized or pure
distilled water is the only liquid which may come into contact with the cell. As this is consumed it
must be refilled from time to time as required. The generated Hydrogen gas is accumulated in the
Hydrogen/water separator and the desiccant housing. The internal pressure is controlled by a
pressure transducer. The outlet pressure is controlled by a proportional valve. The Hydrogen is
dried by passing through the automatic dryer. The Hydrogen then passes through the outlet port
at the rear.

System Test This offers several test functions - see below
Internal Leak Test The outlet valve is closed, the pressure is set to the max.,
when the pressure reaches the max., production is stopped
and the pressure drop is measured during 2 minutes. The
pressure drop should be below 0.7 bar or 10 PSI
Important: The leak test will only work if the generator is
in standby mode.
External Leak Test Works similar to the internal leak test except that the outlet
valve is open and the test pressure is equal to the set
pressure
This function can be used to test the external gas lines
Important: The external leak test will only work if the
generator is in standby mode.
Flow Test This function sets the outlet valve to provide a certain flow
adjustable from 0 to 100% of maximum flow.
Important: This function will only work if the generator is
in standby mode. It will take approx. 2 minutes to get a
stable flow!
Rinse Flow Test This test checks the amount of gas flow, for the dryer
regeneration

7.2 AIR PART

The FID-T NM PLUS Zero Air generator option utilizes a 3-stage process to purify ambient Air into
Zero grade Air. All main components are manufactured with high grade stainless steel, oriented
neatly in the cabinet for easy access and service.
Stage 1: Prefiltration and Pressure Regulation
Air is initially passed through a highly efficient combination of coalescing/particulate pre-filters to
ensure that only quality Air enters the system. The pre-filter removes bulk moisture and larger
particulates greater than 5 microns in size. The filter is supplied with an automatic float drain to
remove periodic moisture build up.
The Air pressure is then regulated with an adjustable forward pressure regulator, pre-set to 7 bar.
The minimum allowable pressure is about 3 bar; the maximum 7.5 bar.
Stage 2: Hydrocarbon and CO Removal
Air is next channelled into a stainless steel catalyst chamber where any background hydrocarbons
and carbon monoxide are oxidized. This chamber is filled with a highly efficient platinum catalyst,
heated to a very high temperature to ensure hydrocarbon removal to less than 0.1 ppm.
Stage 3: Final Filtration
A final high-grade filter is used to remove 99.99% of particulates greater than 0.5 microns in size.
This will ensure that no harmful particles will be able to enter your GC-system.

7.2.1. AIR GENERATOR STARTUP

Warm-up and normal Function

After starting the generator, please wait 20 minutes before providing Air to it.
The Zero Air generator option is designed to run continuously. Continuous operation preserves
the functionality of the catalyst. Shutdown should only be performed for maintenance.
After the warm-up cycle, verify that:
• “POWER” green LED is on
• “READY” LED is on

Shutdown Procedure
Before performing any service or maintenance to the Zero Air generator, be sure to complete the
following steps:
• Turn the power off using the main switch of the unit.
• Disconnect the outlet tubing, and freely run Air through the unit for several minutes to cool
the catalyst. Allow a minimum of 2 hours to cool the catalyst before replacing it.
• Shut the Air supply off.
• De-pressurize the unit and disconnect the power source before servicing.

Error during Operation

If the Air part has problems or errors, the red LED on the display will be on. Through the hole in
the front plastic cover you can see a number. It indicates the type of error.
