5.7 SCHEMATICS
5.7.1. Fluidics
The FID-T NM PLUS generator produces pure Hydrogen (and Oxygen as a by-product) through
the electrolysis of water. The key element of the generator is an electrochemical cell assembly
which contains a solid polymer electrolyte. No free acids or alkaline are used. Deionized or pure
distilled water is the only liquid which may come into contact with the cell. As this is consumed it
must be refilled from time to time as required. The generated Hydrogen gas is accumulated in the
Hydrogen/water separator and the desiccant housing. The internal pressure is controlled by a
pressure transducer. The outlet pressure is controlled by a proportional valve. The Hydrogen is
dried by passing through the automatic dryer. The Hydrogen then passes through the outlet port
at the rear.

The FID-T NM PLUS generator must be placed on a flat, level, vibration- and shock-free surface.
Do not place the generator near a heat source, as this may cause the generator to overheat. The
unit should not be in contact with any other objects on any side, and the Air inlet must not be
blocked. Leave at least 30 cm of free space at the rear for ventilation. Do not operate the generator
in a sealed or unventilated room, near open flames or other sources of ignition. Do not operate
the generator at temperatures below zero degrees C. Operation is guaranteed at temperatures
between +15 and +35°C.
Normal precautions as for any Hydrogen supply should be taken when using the
generator.
DO NOT use in sealed or unventilated rooms.
DO NOT use near open flames or other sources of ignition.
Pure dry Hydrogen at regulated pressure is available at the Hydrogen outlet port at the rear of
the generator. This port must be connected to 1/8” tubing using a stainless-steel or copper
Swagelok connector. Teflon connectors are not suitable. The pressure at this port is adjusted and
shown on the display. The Hydrogen release port at the rear of the unit can be connected to an
exhaust hood or other venting system.
Plug the oil-free compressed Air source to the inlet (AIR IN) of the generator. Use the Air filter
provided in the package.

In order to protect the cell from bad water quality, it is necessary to use a deionization bag.
Inspect the bag thoroughly for holes or tears, indicated by loose deionizer beads on the outer
surface. If the bag is damaged in any way, discard and replace it with a new one. Only use original
parts. Wash the deionizer bag with deionized water before proceeding.
Insert the free end of the “T” fastener through one of the small holes at the edge of the
cover/holder (red circle), until it is securely fastened. The bag should not block the outlet at the
bottom of the tank. Once in place, the bag should not be allowed to dry out.
The internal tank is located behind the front panel:

The FID-T NM PLUS Zero Air generator option utilizes a 3-stage process to purify ambient Air into
Zero grade Air. All main components are manufactured with high grade stainless steel, oriented
neatly in the cabinet for easy access and service.
Stage 1: Prefiltration and Pressure Regulation
Air is initially passed through a highly efficient combination of coalescing/particulate pre-filters to
ensure that only quality Air enters the system. The pre-filter removes bulk moisture and larger
particulates greater than 5 microns in size. The filter is supplied with an automatic float drain to
remove periodic moisture build up.
The Air pressure is then regulated with an adjustable forward pressure regulator, pre-set to 7 bar.
The minimum allowable pressure is about 3 bar; the maximum 7.5 bar.
Stage 2: Hydrocarbon and CO Removal
Air is next channelled into a stainless steel catalyst chamber where any background hydrocarbons
and carbon monoxide are oxidized. This chamber is filled with a highly efficient platinum catalyst,
heated to a very high temperature to ensure hydrocarbon removal to less than 0.1 ppm.
Stage 3: Final Filtration
A final high-grade filter is used to remove 99.99% of particulates greater than 0.5 microns in size.
This will ensure that no harmful particles will be able to enter your GC-system.
Shutdown Procedure
Before performing any service or maintenance to the Zero Air generator, be sure to complete the
following steps:
• Turn the power off using the main switch of the unit.
• Disconnect the outlet tubing, and freely run Air through the unit for several minutes to cool
the catalyst. Allow a minimum of 2 hours to cool the catalyst before replacing it.
• Shut the Air supply off.
• De-pressurize the unit and disconnect the power source before servicing.
