A SERIES OF WOMEN’S SAFETY JEWELLERY

This series of products is an exquisite fusion of tradition and

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN COMPETITION

modernity, where the timeless artistry of Kashmiri paper
mache meets cutting-edge technology to redefine women’s
safety.

Inspiration was drawn from the rich cultural heritage of

Kashmiri paper mache—a centuries-old craft that has
adorned homes and hearts alike. Each piece in our collection
embodies the delicate intricacies and vibrant colors
synonymous with this traditional art form, creating a
captivating narrative that resonates with grace and strength.

This is a collection that speaks to the empowered

woman—a woman who cherishes her cultural roots while
embracing the future.

4
DESIGN STORY

The motivation comes from the idea for a ‘self-reliant’ safety mechanism for women when faced with menace. Keeping women safe-guarded
is a collective responsibility. Even so, due to insensitive social setup, women are forced to adopt prudent safety measures for themselves. The
aim was to give women a new perspective on their ordnance.
Existing products do cater to the issue of women’s safety, but carrying such bulky types of equipment is not the most pragmatic. This was the
main concept behind creating a product women can proudly wear, carry with ease, and use efficiently.

The jewellery market is huge in itself; with the added incentive of compacted defence measures, there would be a higher demand for the
product. Connecting it with our chosen craft would create a worldwide recognition for the product, increasing its demand and production, further
providing work to craftsmen.

As the name suggests, this bangle doubles as a pepper spray when required. The bangle, divided into 2 parts, is attached at
one end with a hinge. One half is hollowed out to comprise the pepper spray and the other half is completely solid but at the

DESIGN STORY

From the outset, we learn the vital necessities of life: food, shelter, and clothing. The sight of PROBLEM SOLUTION
someone living on the streets is a shared experience. In India, approximately 1.77 million
individuals are homeless, with 938,384 residing in urban areas. The capital itself has between
150,000 to 200,000 homeless residents.
HOMELESSNESS CAUSES STABLE INCOME
In societal eyes, these individuals are often deemed “Invisible People,” appearing UNAFFORDABLE HOUSING

ECONOMIC AFFORDABLE HOUSING
Our design inspiration is drawn from a commonplace sight on Indian streets—handcarts,

colloquially known as “Redi” or “Thela.” Whether in urban or rural settings, these wooden or

steel structures are utilized by various individuals. Redi not only serves as the livelihood for SOCIOLOGICAL
many in India but also serves as a makeshift resting place in times of need. SOCIAL SECURITY

The idea of repurposing these structures to address the challenges of homelessness and
unemployment is a simple yet impactful solution. It resonates particularly well with those
accustomed to seeing Redi as a basic and accessible structure everywhere.
