PRESENTATION

Thank you for choosing a dot marking system (also called micro-percussion) for your
marking applications.

SIC MARKING systems contribute to improve the tracability of your products while
complying with the industrial standards.

We would like to welcome you as a user of our systems.

This guide contains the installation and use instructions of the dot marking type machines.
We recommend that you read it carefully before installing the system.

Please contact our technical department for any further information..

NOTE8V5US - R01.doc 6/33
I - INSTALLATION AND START-UP

1 - Marking Machine Pack definition

A standard marking pack is composed of:

• Mechanical marking head,
• Electronic controller,
• Start/stop button box (not for hand held systems),
• Cables.

2 - Unpacking
Except if we deliver the system, it is generally supplied in an appropriate packaging, which needs to be kept for any
return of the material.

Remove the sub-systems carefully (controller, control handbox, possible options …) from their packages

The machine should only be lifted by the column and the base ; it
should never be lifted by the head housing.
Weight of the machine 41 kg

3 - Installation

a) Fastening
Column-type machines
o Install the machine on a rigid and stable support frame
o After installing the entire marking machine, fasten the base with 2 M10 screws.

Integrated-type machines
o Install the machine on a rigid and stable support frame
o Fasten the marking head onto the machine by complying with the indications of the integration plan, available
thread length 12 mm max.

Portable-type machines
o No fastening : marking gun designed to be held manually

Note : The integrated and portable type machines are designed to function in all positions (vertical, horizontal,
stylus towards the bottom or the top)

b) Connections
• Using the SUB-D 25 connector or USB cable, connect the marking machine to the "marker" connector located at the rear
of the controller. For the integrated type machines, proceed the same way using a connection cable.
• Correctly fasten the screws of the connector.
Note : for more details about the connections, please check the controller manual.

NOTE8V5US - R01.doc 7/33

Never unplug the controller when it is under tension as it may
seriously damage the material

A ALTHOUGH IT IS PROTECTED AND MEETS THE STANDARDS REQUIREMENTS,

THIS ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT MAY BE SENSITIVE TO EXTERNAL DISTURBANCES.
THEREFORE, IT MUST BE CONNECTED TO AN INSTALLATION WHICH COMPLIES
WITH STANDARDS AND IT MUST BE PROTECTED FROM POSSIBLE RADIATIONS.

II - USE OF THE MACHINE

1 - Safety

An intense use may cause the temperature of the system to rise

up to 100 °C

It is recommended to wear safety glasses

It is also recommended to wear a noise reducing helmet.

Acoustic value of the machine : 76 dB* on a piece of steel at
medium speed
(caution : this value could be higher, it depends on the part to be marked)

The marking system should never be used without any surface

to mark as the marking head may break

The machine must be surrounded by a housing or by a

light curtain.

The Auto sensing option is not a security function of the

digital Z axis

NOTE8V5US - R01.doc 9/33

2 - Marking machine

a) Positioning and clamping of the part to be marked

Even if the part is not submitted to high forces, it is necessary to immobilize it in order to reach an optimal marking quality.
Depending on the type of parts and the working conditions, the clamping system can vary from the simple manual fastening
of the part against an angle iron (bracket) to the mechanical, magnetic or pneumatic fastening.

When using a marking gun, place the universal non-skid support against the surface to be marked and manually hold the
gun during the marking.

The fastening device should maintain the part so that the stylus movements are parallel to the surface to be marked.

For the portable type machines, if the marking is always conducted on the same type of parts, we advise you to
make a customized tooling to always keep the same marking position.

b) Machine adjustment
The marking quality highly depends on the part to be marked ; a smooth and flat surface is much easier to mark than a
rough and irregular surface.

It is generally necessary to adapt the marking force to the height of the character. The smaller the character is, the lower the
impact has to be to obtain a good legibility. The software also enables to choose various widths for the marking matrix.

To obtain a good marking quality, it is fundamental to adjust the force and the distance. When using marking guns, the
distance between the stylus and the part can be modified by adjusting the position of the front plate.

For your information, hereafter are some values about the distance between the stylus and the part depending on the
marking force :

Force 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Minimum distance 0.5 0.5 0.5 1 1 2 3 5 6
Maximum distance 1 2 3 5 6 7 9 9 9

Maximum distance between the stylus and the part : 9 mm

We recommend that you make trials before marking a new part.

c) Launch / Stop the marking

o Set the controller in marking mode (for more information, please see the software manual)
o Position the part to be marked
o Launch the marking by pressing the "Start" button on the control handbox or the "Marche" button on the gun handle
(portable type machine)
o To stop the marking, press the "Stop" button on the control handbox or press the "Marche" button of the gun handle for
more than 2 seconds

(for a radiating mark, used for pointing to the center of the circle)

NOTE8V5US - R01.doc 23/33

2 - Use of variable fields
When part of the text to be marked requires regular modifications to the wording, the incrementation of a meter, or time-
date stamping, it is better to use variable functions rather than reprint each time the complete parameter set (and thus risk
making errors in modification).
These variable areas are available with two file editors.

In addition, when using passwords, the variables and incrementations enable the operator to modify even so part of the
markings, without necessarily having access to the print parameters.

There are three types of functions: the time, alphanumeric, incrementation variables and the special characters

The special characters are used for printing the °, ü, 2, characters, or an ASCII code for the Data-Matrix.

The alphanumeric variables and the implementations are attached to a single file or are common to all of the files (in which
case we refer to overall variables or overall increments)
The time variables are common to all the files.

The variables common to all the files are declared in the marking mode and are used in the edit mode. The other variables
are declared and used in the edit mode.
Each variable is represented by a name that the controller analyses and replaces by the corresponding value.

A value is assigned to a variable in the marking mode (shortcut key ).

IX - PRESENTATION OF ACCESSORIES

1 - The digital Z axis without auto-sensing

a) Presentation
The digital Z axis is a third axis that carries out approach and backing off of the digital head. This axis may be
vertical or horizontal.

With this option, for each line in the parameter settings table of this system, you may enter a specific value for Z
positioning. This will enable you to skirt around obstacles, mark inside cavities, or on more or less domed surfaces.

b) Parameter settings

- If the movement in Z moves the stylus away from the pierce,
then the machine will make the Z movement then position the
stylus in X, Y.

With the APPROACH function, it is possible to adjust all three axes: X, Y and Z.

NOTE8V5US - R01.doc 29/33

2 - The digital Z axis with auto-sensing

a) Presentation
The Auto-sensing function corresponds to an automatic Z axis. The Z coordinates can no longer be parameterized
but on the other hand, there will be additional functional features:
- Automatic positioning of the marking head with respect to the piece (with safety bearing)
- Manual clearing of the marking head
- Wizards calculating automatically the distance from the axis to the piece.

b) Parameter settings

MARKING mode: CONFIG:MACHINE menu or key

Choose: Z Num. from the accessories list and press the key to access the parameters.

D min : Minimum movement without encountering the workpiece

D max : Maximum movement without encountering the workpiece
DZ : Stylus/workpiece marking distance
1st point: Sensing is carried out using the XY coordinate or at the first points to be marked?
Operation:
- Movement of the machine in Z over a stroke of D mini, then search for workpiece at low speed over a stroke of (D max – D mini).
- If the workpiece is detected during the fast descent, or if no workpiece is detected during low speed movement, the Z origin is
resumed and the machine is declared defective.

Adjusting wizard:
Press for access to the approach functions:
The menu LEARN:TEACHING or a combination of keys + will allow the calculation of the
distance between the machine and the work piece origin.

TEACHING TEACHING

This distance can be used to adjust the D min and D max fields.

3 - D axis

a) Presentation
The D axis is a peripheral of the marking machine permitting marking on cylindrical parts. It appears as a small
chuck allowing the rotation of the parts to be identified,

If your controller has a 3rd axis card you can set the parameters of the system so that this option may be used. To do
this, go to the configuration menu then the machine selection menu. You may then activate the use of the D axis
option.

Subsequently, in the parameter edit mode, you will need to enter the diameter of the part present in the chuck (this
parameter will be requested on the general marking parameters entry screen), so that marking can be performed
accordingly. If the D axis option is present in the system, but you want to carry out plane marking, enter the value
‘zero’ for the diameter of the workpiece.

For normal use of the D axis, it must be mounted to the left of the marking head and the axis of the part must be
aligned exactly with the X movement head.

b) Parameter settings

Choose : D AXIS from the accessories list and press the key to access the parameters.
The following screen will appear :
D AXIS
RATIO (p/rev
V MIN (p/s)
V MAX (p/s)
V ORG (p/s)
+ are used for returning to the ACCEL.
Y OFFSET (mm)

ORIGIN RETURN

The parameters to be adapted are generally RATIO, V MIN, V MAX, V ORG, ACCEL, Y OFFSET. Refer to the mechanical
manual to obtain the values.

The ORIGIN RETURN value is used for returning or not returning to the end of marking origin.

c) Use in a file
To manage the D axis in a marking file, it is necessary to use the full editor.
In the full editor, go to the file parameters ( ) and specify the diameter of the workpiece.

The INDEXER option is used for large pieces:

The machine engraves the workpiece letter by letter with the X and Y axes and repositions the D axis
angularly at the beginning of each character.

NOTE8V5US - R01.doc 32/33

5 - Z binary :

a) Presentation
This is an « all or nothing » axis used for the approach and withdrawal of the marking head. The difference
compared to the digital Z axis is that there are only two different positions the « advanced » and « withdrawn »
positions. There is no possibility of obtaining different levels because the positions are determined by two
mechanical stops.

b) Parameter settings

Choose : Z binary from the accessories list and press the key to access the parameters.
The following screen will appear :
Z binary
ACTIVATION BY LINE
OUTPUT NUMBER
WITHDRAWAL DETECTOR
+ are used for returning to the WITHDRAWAL TIMEOUT (ms)

ACTIVATION BY LINE : (YES or NO)

OUTPUT NUMBER : Number of the output controlling this axis
WITHDRAWAL DETECTOR : Detects input number (if present)
WITHDRAWAL TIMER : Maximum time of actuator movement
OUTPUT DETECTOR : Detects input number (if present)
OUTPUT TIMER : Maximum time of actuator movement

It operates as follows in the course of a marking cycle:

• Positioning of stylus at the coordinates of the first point to be set

• Marking head approach
• Piece marking
• Withdrawal of marking head (while remaining within the coordinates of the last impact).
• Origin setting on the two X and Y axes

Example of Z axis pneumatic positioning

The head moves under the effect of a pneumatic actuator controlled by the marking controller.

It is noteworthy that if you wish to incorporate the machine into any positioning cycle, selecting the pneumatic
z axis may offer advantages. It is then simply necessary to wait for a head positioning request on the static relay
output and return the end of positioning information through a simple logic controller (instead of the travel end
detectors).
For instance, using this method, you can permit positioning at several levels so that the external logic controller
manages these levels.

c) Use in a file
There is nothing particular to report in the marking file.
