Words that end in (er, el, en) tend to be masculine. Cognates that refer to men tend to be masculine. Nouns that end in (ling, ig, ich) are always masculine. Many words of one syllable that end in consonant are masculine.
The feminine nouns:
Words that refer exclusively to women are usually feminine. Words that refer to women and inanimate objects ending in (e) tend to be feminine. Words ending in (ung, in) are feminine. Feminine nouns ending in (in) usually have a masculine counterpart that doesn’t have that ending. Nouns ending in (heit, keit, ie, schaft, tät) are usually feminine. Words that end in (tion) are always feminine.
The neuter nouns:
Diminutives are always neuter, they end either in (lein, chen). Words that end in (um, ium) are always neuter. Words that begin with the prefix (Ge) tend to be neuter.
