Articles and nouns

The masculine nouns:


 Words that end in (er, el, en) tend to be masculine.
 Cognates that refer to men tend to be masculine.
 Nouns that end in (ling, ig, ich) are always masculine.
 Many words of one syllable that end in consonant are masculine.

The feminine nouns:


 Words that refer exclusively to women are usually feminine.
 Words that refer to women and inanimate objects ending in (e) tend to be
feminine.
 Words ending in (ung, in) are feminine.
 Feminine nouns ending in (in) usually have a masculine counterpart that
doesn’t have that ending.
 Nouns ending in (heit, keit, ie, schaft, tät) are usually feminine.
 Words that end in (tion) are always feminine.

The neuter nouns:


 Diminutives are always neuter, they end either in (lein, chen).
 Words that end in (um, ium) are always neuter.
 Words that begin with the prefix (Ge) tend to be neuter.
