Practice Paper - HOTS

Subject: Science Std: IX

Chapter 4: Structure of the atom

General Instructions:
1. The Practice Paper comprises HOTS.
2. Attempt all questions.

1. An atom of an element has 5 electrons in L-shell.

(a) What is the atomic number of the element?
(b) State its valency.
(c) Identify the element and write its name
(d) Write the formula of the compound when the element combines with
oxygen.

2. There are 10 electrons in the species R +3. If the number of neutrons is 14, then
deduce its atomic number and mass number.

3. In a sample of ethyl ethanoate (CH 3COOC2H5) the two oxygen atoms have the
same number of electrons but different number of neutrons. What is the reason
for it?

4. Two elements M and N contain equal number of protons, electrons and neutrons.
N contains double the number of electrons, protons and neutrons than in M. M
contains 8 electrons in L-shell, N contains 2 electrons in N-shell. Identify M and N.

5. An atom of an element has no electron, will that atom have any mass or not?

6. What is the number of maximum number of electrons which can be filled in Z-

shell of an imaginary atom?
