German 3

Introduction

Welcome to the Reading Lessons for German 3. In

this Level, you’ll begin by reading signs, words and
phrases you’re likely to see or hear when you’re
traveling in a German speaking country. (You’ve
got your trip booked, right?) There are a few les-
sons containing useful vocabulary for items you’d
find while traveling by train or plane, asking for
or giving directions, and some common phrases.
There are lessons that will help if you’re just head-
ing into a pharmacy, or if you should run into a real
emergency involving doctors and hospitals. One
lesson contains names of body parts, another will
help navigate a visit to a restaurant or checking
into a hotel. We’ll go shopping and to the bank,
visit a museum and go to the opera. There are les-
sons with weather terms, names of landmarks, and
we’ve wrapped it up with even more more typical
expressions and regional idioms, like this one: Er ist
nicht auf den Mund gefallen. (He’s never at a loss
for words, literally: He didn’t fall on his mouth.)

Level 3 Reading Lessons begin at audio lesson 11

and continue to the end of the course. As in earlier
levels, the words you'll see in the Reading Lesson
don't match up with the vocabulary in the corre-
sponding audio lesson. And remember, the Read-
ing Lessons require you to read and speak aloud,
so please do not attempt to do them if your eyes
are otherwise engaged, for example while walking
or driving.

It’s important that as you first read through each

lesson, you concentrate only on the recognition
and pronunciation of the German. We recommend
you first read the German text without looking at
the translations. Afterwards, you can review the
English meanings separately to help you add new
vocabulary.

Reading Lessons can be done along with the audio

lessons, or done entirely after you finish the rest of
the course. Instructions on how to proceed with
the readings are contained in the audio.
