Why Context matters?

Context is the interrelated conditions in which
something exists or occurs. Literary Context,
therefore is what surrounds the writer that
influences him as much as he influences it.
-Merriam Webster dictionary
The context of a literature can help you
understand the work better.

Context can include:

•the time and place the poem was written

•how the poem has been read at different

times and in different situations

•biographical details about a writer’s life

•how the poem relates to literary traditions

•times and places referred to in the poem

Text is the words written in order to create
literature. This is the form and structure. It usually
differs when it comes to its form and structure
depending on the genre. -21st Cent. Lit. Vibal of 2022

LESSON REVIEW

Literary Work

Literary Work
Types of
Literary
Context
Biographical
Biographical context is formed by the
beliefs, education, culture, and
experiences of the author.

The author features information about

his/herself in the literature. The literary
piece mirrors his/her life experiences.
Historical
Historical context refers to the
information given about a certain period
of time, events that occurred within that
period, and the situation of the people at
that point in time.
Historical context is the awareness that
the people who created sources were
living at a time. History is manifested in
the author’s literary piece.
Geographical
Geographic context is a way of
looking at a literature from the
perspective of the geography of events
that happened upon writing the work.

Geographical context includes the

setting, atmosphere, language and
localization of the author.
Political
Political context defines the political
scenario directly or indirectly influencing
the production of literature.

The significant political event occurred

affects the author’s writing. His/her
political beliefs may surface from his/her
composition.
Philosophical
Literature addresses age-old questions of
religion, ethics, and morality.

It ponders the purpose of life, the nature

of God or the universe, right versus
wrong, death and time.

Philosophical context may also present

possible behavioral attributes of the
author.
Sociological
Sociological context is the type of
environment and society pertaining to
humanity as a factor in which the
literature takes place.

Human behavior is shaped by the groups

to which people belong and by the social
interaction that takes place within those
groups.
Psychological
This context includes the mental and
emotional factors in creating the
literature.

Stress, anxiety, and emotions are just

some examples of psychological
influences that can affect writer’s tone
and mood in writing a piece.
