FAITH FORMATION RESOURCES FOR ADOLESCENTS (GEN Z)

Introduction:

The resources offered here have been carefully selected and tailored for the African

community, primarily Nigerians, at Christ Embassy Travis (Believers LoveWorld),

Carrington Congregation in Calgary. Among our African congregation, approximately half

consist of adolescents aged 10 to 19. They make up a significant portion of our church,

with many African families having 2-3 adolescent children. Recognizing this, it's crucial

as spiritual leaders that we proactively offer resources to foster their spiritual growth

during this pivotal stage of life.

To meet this need, we aim to provide them with a range of resources designed

specifically for their faith formation. These include materials like The Believers

LoveWorld Foundation School Manual, Rhapsody of Reality, podcasts, and more.

Moreover, we intend to extend similar resources to cater to other age groups, ensuring

continuous spiritual development across various life stages.

This project marks the initial phase of furnishing curated resources for our

adolescent population. We anticipate ongoing feedback and revisions as we strive to refine

and enhance the resources provided. Our goal is to ensure that every individual within our

community has access to resources that aid in their lifelong journey of faith formation.

Since this curated faith-formation resource is for a specified group, the following

characteristics will be the basis to select suitable resources for our Adolescents group.

Characteristics of Christ Embassy Travis (Believers Loveworld) Adolescents:

● Ethnic Background: 85% immigrants from Nigeria, the rest are immigrants

from Africa.
● Socio-economic background: 50% are dependent on their parents while 20%

do part-time jobs.

● Educational background: 90% are High School Students.

● English proficiency: 100% speaks, read and write in English.

● Technology Comfort: 100% owned a smartphone used in communication with

friends and family members. However, they are diverse in terms of usage of

online apps and other tools opened to use.

● General characteristics:

● 40% serve in at least one role in the church.

● 100% depends on parents even when some work during holidays.

● 25% engage in sports activities.

● They are committed and predictable to an extent.

● Explore and have passion for learning.

● Enjoy learning through stories.

● They are open to being built spiritually.

● Willing to learn new skills and embrace innovations.

RESOURCES FOR ADOLESCENTS: Four Content Areas.

Based on the characteristics of Christ Embassy Travis (Believers Loveworld) adolescents

population which is about 150-200 people, the following four major content areas of faith-

formation resources are selected for this curating paper. (Explanation is provided under

each content area in later sections.)

1. Caring Relationships.

2. Life Stage.

3. Milestones and Transitions/Celebrating Rituals.

4. Prayer and Spiritual Formation.

Under each content area, there are a few related topics to emphasize on resources

in a particular topic to enhance easy usage. There will be a list of resources under each

topic. For each resource, there is a short description accompanied with an evaluation chart.

There will be six areas of evaluation as indicated in the chart as follows. Each resource is

evaluated on 1. Biblical content and interpretation (Faith based): how valuable the

resources based on Biblical and Christian values, 2. Ease of use: how easy it is to use the

resource for adolescents, 3. Respect for diverse ways of learning and teaching

(Relevant): how relevant is the resource to the adolescents, 4. Development

appropriateness (Practical): how practical adolescents would find this resource to be, 5.

Ability to be incorporated into daily and home life, and so on (Comprehensive): how

comprehensive is the resource regarding the particular area for adolescents. 6. Inclusive

of diversity: how culturally sensitive is the resource to a group of Nigerian (African)

Christian adolescents. The number of check mark in each area indicate the rating, with

five check mark as the best and zero indicating a poor performance in this area:

CONTENT AREA 1: Caring relationships

Given the steadfast and open-minded nature of our target audience—the adolescent

population—they demonstrate a strong commitment and enthusiasm for embracing new

ideas. Providing resources that facilitate deeper social connections within the faith

community and their families would greatly benefit them. This particular group

consistently exhibits high attendance in fellowships and groups, indicating a genuine

desire for community and meaningful bonds.

At Christ Embassy Travis (Believers LoveWorld), we're transitioning from large

fellowships to smaller, more intimate groups. This shift offers adolescents greater

opportunities to cultivate close relationships within their faith journey in a more personal

setting. However, many of them may lack the necessary skills to actively listen and offer

supportive engagement, given that their pre-frontal cortex, responsible for such complex

abilities, is still in its developmental stage during their search for identity as adolescents.

A. Learning to Listen
B. Group Sharing and Support.

C. Spiritual Companionship.

In this particular area, books, podcasts and audio messages are mostly chosen for

effectiveness as the adolescent population are used to it due to the availability of

technology. This comprehensively makes them understand the dynamics of active

listening. Since Christ embassy (Believers Loveworld) have various small groups, they

could practice what they have learnt from reading and interpreting the podcasts and audio

messages in their group or family settings.

TOPIC A: Learning to Listen

Spiritual listening embodies all of our senses as we offer ourselves to another

freely without expectation, providing the opening for deep communion is an exchange

from the deepest level of our humanity, we feel at home with one another, resting in the

grace and peace of our relationship also with God.

● The book Listening to Spirituality volume 1; Personal Spiritual Practices

among Friends by Patricia Loring guides us and the adolescents to listen to

themselves, listen to God, as well as listening to one another. Patricia,

encourages readers to serve each other through listening as it is a great and

important first step in building deeper relationships in a community.1

spiritual practice. The book expresses short reflections, accompanied with art

work, and very easy to read and comprehend. The book inspires us and the

adolescents to appreciate silence, reflection, and being presence. Lindahl also

offers simple questions and hints for us to be more attentive and open to listen

to others.2

of this book for spiritual guidance and as a small practical tool for small group

in order to build spiritual relationships based on studying and learning the

scriptures together.9

● A contemplative approach to youth ministry seeks to engage adolescents and

adults in authentic actions that reflects God’s mercy, justice and peace.

CONTENT AREA 2: Life Stage

During the transition toward adulthood, a significant number of adolescents within Christ

Embassy (Believers LoveWorld) often witness changes in their family dynamics. Effective

faith formation practices during this crucial phase emphasize open communication and

support within the family, congregational small groups, and within the church community

as a whole. Research consistently highlights parents as the primary influencers in

adolescents' lives, shaping their faith practices and beliefs.

Especially during the early adolescent years, parents play a pivotal role despite the

youths' aspiration for independence. Their influence remains significant in linking

adolescents to the church, with parents reinforcing faith through regular church attendance.

Concurrently, the church plays a vital role in nurturing adolescents, aiding them in

understanding and aligning with God's principles.

Collaboratively, the church and parents must engage in appropriate developmental

programs to foster a sense of belonging, purpose, and competence among teens. This

approach helps solidify their religious devotion. Furthermore, particular attention must be

paid to their education, considering the diverse beliefs present in high schools. Addressing

aspects of relationships and sexuality becomes crucial during this developmental stage.

The following topics are selected for this section:

A. Parental/Church Role

B. Educational/Work concern

C. Relationships and Sexuality

In terms of resources, numerous tools exist to reinforce discipline and solidify a

robust foundation for faith formation in adolescents, facilitated through their engagement

with parents and the church. This comprehensive approach not only shapes their

educational and career choices but also influences their understanding of relationships and

sexuality. By catering to diverse learning styles, these resources can be practically applied

within small church groups. Equipping parents with necessary materials will empower

them to nurture their children's faith, providing guidance in educational and sexual

decision-making.

TOPIC A: Parental/Church Role

● According to Lytch, in the book: Choosing Church: what makes a difference

for Teens, “one of the most important things parents do is choose a church that

is attractive to teens. If parents choose a church that attracts teens by

belonging, meaning, and competencies that it offers, parents facilitate the link

between the teen and the church that is crucial for developing religious loyalty

and faith.”11

● Congregations offer instruction and guidance that nurture parental faith and

equip parents for nurturing faith at home by equipping parents of teenagers for

their parenting roles and sharing of faith with teens through classes,

workshops, retreats, support groups. These include parenting classes, parent-

youth discussion times, parent support groups, seminars for parents of

adolescents as they provide for high school, and so forth. Give parents the

opportunity to socialize with other parents of teens. The church also plans

programs for parents and teens on common areas of interest and need, such as

parent-teen community, making vocational decisions, cultural/media

influences, social issues, and many others. Plan activities where teens and

parents do something together, such as parent-teen service intergenerational

programs. According to Smith and Denton in the book: Soul Searching; The

Religious and Spiritual Lives of American Teenagers, “In sum, therefore, we

think that the best general rule of thumb is this ‘we will get what we are.’ By

normal processes of socialization, and unless other significant forces intervene,

more than what parents might say they want as religious outcomes of their

children, most parents most likely will end up getting religiosity of their

children what they themselves are.”12

TOPIC B. Education/Work Concern

● Integrating faith into education and career decisions can help adolescents find

purpose and meaning in their pursuits. For example, using independent

learning; with the increasing number and variety of audio and video podcasts

and online learning resources, independent learning offers a sure 24/7

approach to faith formation of busy teens. Example of independent learning

include: Christ Embassy’s foundation school manual for learning, magazine

print or online, podcasts/audio learning, video podcasts, and video-based

learning, online Bible studies, and online learning centers, such as Disciples

Now (www.disciplenow.com) and Spirit and Song (www.spiritandsong.com).

TOPIC C. Relationships and Sexuality

Providing guidance for healthy relationships and a biblical perspective on sexuality by

parents and Christian congregation is very essential at this stage of adolescents.

● Friends are a high priority with young adolescents; making, meeting, and

maintaining friends is a major focus in any setting. Their affinity for

relationships shapes their spiritual lives as well. Providing avenues for social

interactions with peers and addressing relational issues is integral to effective

faith formation. As adolescents become conscious of their capacity for

relationships, it is an opportune time for us to encourage them in establishing

and/or deepening their relationship with Jesus as their ultimate friend. This

involves both a cognitive understanding and a relational experience. During

adolescence, the relational aspect of spirituality is most impactful. Gospel

values of human dignity, inclusion, compassion, forgives and what it means to

truly “Love one another '' as God loves us. That is why Christ embassy

provided foundational teaching manuals like the foundational school manual,

podcasts, youth rapsody of reality that will be used to teach the adolescents on

the biblical perspectives on relationships and sexuality. At times there are talks

on sexuality in youth classes.16

● Tending to the healthy social development of adolescents takes on even greater

significance in today’s world of networking and cyberbullying. Adolescents do

not understand the concept of “public and permanent” in the digital world. In

many cases they are not exposed to information and situations not appropriate

for their age, and without the awareness or supervision of their parents. This is

an issue the church ought to address with both youth and parents through

intergenerational efforts.17

Recognizing significant life transitions, such as entering high school or college, can help

tailor faith formation praxis. Providing mentorship and support during these transitions is

extremely vital. Adolescents experience many developmental milestones marking their

transition into adulthood. They face some normal developmental tasks during these

changes in physical, cognitive, emotional, social, language, career, and spiritual domain. A

teenager goes through three separate sub-stages of adolescence: early (12-14 years),

middle (15-17 years), and the late (18-21 years) adolescence.

Understanding what changes occur during each of these periods will enable adults

to better understand, connect, and communicate with teens. Information describing the

normal development, feelings, and behaviors that the vast majority of young people will

experience during adolescence, and will be helpful information for people working with

teens as we are in our faith congregation in modeling them as they grow. During age 12-14

years the adolescents experience the onset of puberty caused by hormonal changes with

girls starting puberty on average two years earlier than boys. Therefore, parents and church

leaders should always be there to guide them as they will begin to experience maturity of

organs needed for reproduction, and visible physical changes. From this stage, the search

for identity begins. At middle adolescence (15-17 years), girls have completed full

physical development while boys are close to finishing their growth. Late adolescence

occurs from (18-21 years), this is the age of biggest development as they transition from

high school into postsecondary education, work etc. At these stages they need guidance in

terms of socialization, technology use, authenticity, and many more. Therefore, the

following three topics are considered for discussion in this section:

A. Developmental Milestones

B. Celebration of Milestones/Rituals
C. Socialization

In terms of resources, books and technological corrective learning apparatus such as

podcasts, blogs, audio and video tapes, visual educative sections, retreats, milestones

celebrations, celebration of rituals and mentorship is considered.

TOPIC A: Developmental Milestones

● As the adolescents undergo transitional physical development, the brain

undergoes growth changes resulting in the ability of more abstract thinking and

improved problem-solving. At this stage they search for identity, which is

mostly driven by peer pressure and strong need for conformity and acceptance.

Individuals with similar behaviors, interests, and attitudes tend to form peer

groups but not necessarily close friendships. They spend more time with peers

than family at this stage, this can lead to conflict because they begin to show

less overt affections toward their parents, and, frequent increase in rudeness if

not properly nurtured and guided towards discipline and our culture in Africa

demands. At the early adolescent age they need constant attendance of church

activities and intent involvement in faith formative activities. Just as the

biblical teaching in the book of (Proverbs 22: 6) “Train up a child in the way

he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Adolescents value

authentic faith experiences and avoiding cliché and fostering genuine

encounters with God is crucial. Since adolescents are very self-concerned, we

try to engage them in discussion by asking how the ideas, subject, situation, or
outcome may impact their lives. Putting it in a way of making the discussion

personal and of interest to them. 21

● In terms of development, we should note that brain research has shown that the

pre-frontal cortex (PFC) of the brain is still under construction during

adolescence, and into young adulthood. The PFC functions as the CEO of the

brain, the center for decision making, planning, impulse control, and

consequences. Just when adolescence needs it most, the PFC’s ability to act

rationally and think through problems and challenges breakdown. Even though

the adolescent PFC is much closer to being mature, it is no match for the

overwhelming hormone-driven impulses during these years. As David Walsh

describes it, during adolescence “the brain gets the gas before the brakes.”23

During this stage, adolescents ask questions about identity, belonging, and

purpose and they grapple with various aspects of their lives, including family

dynamics, work, education, leisure activities, relationships, sexuality, social

and political issues. Christian faith formation plays a vital role in helping

adolescents navigate these challenges and develop a strong faith foundation in

their faith.

● As a young person enters adolescence, their parents are still largely responsible

for all aspects of their health. By the end of adolescence, health issues will be

almost entirely the responsibility of the young person. The challenge is to

maintain an effective clinical relationship while the health responsibilities

transfer from the parents to the young person. 24

TOPIC B: Celebration of Milestones/Rituals

● Confirmation, receiving a driver's license, graduation from high school,

moments of sickness (personal, family, friends), the death of a loved one, and

life decisions are all important milestones or a life transition that provide an

excellent opportunity for adolescent faith formation. Congregations would do

well to carefully plan: the preparation for making a milestone, the experience

of the celebration or remembrance of the milestone, and follow-up after the

● Adolescents should be carried along in the effective participation in all

Christian rituals. Their active participation would help establish the practices

of those rituals subsequently as they grow into adulthood. Rituals such as the

TOPIC C: Socialization

● Socialization which is a social process happens as an adolescent lives in a

religious community. It “builds knowledge of the symbols, rituals, narratives,

and it includes the habit, such as church attendance, praying, and Bible
reading, that compromise the Christian life.”29 Socialization for adolescents

occurs through the example and mentoring of others, education in the Bible

of the church, especially in the areas of church attendance, praying/Bible

degree of religious loyalty increases even more.”30

● During the adolescence age, their socialization should be mostly built among

Christian peers so they would not be easily influenced negatively in high

schools. Though it might seem boring to them but gradually the Christian life

will be part of them in terms of deep discipline. Richard J. Foster in the book:

Celebration of Discipline: The Path to Spiritual Growth, which is about the

central disciplines of Christianity. Though these disciplines may lead to a

boring life of restriction and missing out, but to a life of balance, freedom,

abundance, and celebration of Christ. A better life. Life to the fullest as it was

CONTENT AREA 4: Prayer and Spiritual Formation

Prayer and spiritual growth carry immense importance for spirited and dynamic

adolescents as they navigate the quest for identity, belonging, and purpose. As they

journey toward maturity, fostering a strong foundation in prayer becomes invaluable.

Through prayer, we openly lay our desires before God, shaping our aspirations and

guiding our endeavors. Introducing adolescents to spiritual practices such as Lectio

Divina, fasting as a discipline, embracing the Bible as a guiding light, active participation

in church events, retreats, and more can establish enduring habits, serving as a steadfast

compass for their future. This rationale led to the selection of the following topics in this

section:

A. Bible Study/ Prayer

B. Spiritual Disciplines and Practices

C. Spiritual Guidance
