WESTCOAST KOBES #3 - GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION

1.0 INTRODUCTION
Golder Associates Ltd. (Golder) was retained by Westcoast Energy Inc. carrying on business as Spectra Energy
Transmission (Westcoast) to conduct a geotechnical investigation and to provide comments and recommendations
for Westcoast’s Kobes #3 LFERW Replacement Project (Kobes #3) which is a section of existing pipeline proposed
to be replaced by trenchless methods.

Golder’s scope of work is based on the Scope of Work outlined in Golder proposal dated 27 September, 2017
(Golder proposal No. P1788373). The work was authorized under service contract PO number 9550038893.

This report summarizes the methodology used and provides geotechnical comments and recommendations with
respect to soil stratigraphic conditions, engineering properties along the proposed route as input for design and
construction of the pipeline and facilities. Where comments are made on the general site conditions and
construction, they are provided to highlight aspects that could affect the design of the project. Those requiring
information on geotechnical aspects of the site beyond the scope of this report must make their own interpretation

T
of the subsurface information, particularly as it affects their proposed construction methods, costs, equipment
selection, scheduling and the like.

Use of this report is subject to conditions outlined in the “Important Information and Limitations of this Report”
AF
section which follows the main text and forms an integral part of this document.

2.0 SITE AND PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The proposed Site is located approximately 81 km northwest of Fort St. John, BC and is 3.4 km north of the
Halfway River and 5.3 km south of the Cameron River. It is dissected by a tributary to Chief’s Cabin Creek, a
tributary of the Halfway River. The site location is shown on Figure 1.
R
The proposed pipeline will consist of approximately 885 m of 323.9 mm diameter pipeline. The pipeline will be
installed using trenchless techniques.
D

Based on the available terrain maps, glaciolacustrine (comprising silty clay) are observed on the eastern portion
of the Site and glaciofluvial (comprising sandy silt) deposits on the western portion of the Site.

3.0 GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION

3.1 Terrain Analysis Summary
Golder completed detailed terrain mapping and analysis along the proposed Kobes #3. The terrain analysis
incorporated data from publicly available surficial geology, bedrock geology and soils data for the Project area
followed by detailed terrain mapping at scales ranging from approximately 1:2,000 to 1:500 using stereo black and
white imagery captured in 1997. Data from three boreholes has also been incorporated into the mapping; two of
the boreholes have been established on either side of the tributary stream to Chief’s Cabin Creek.

A total of 23 terrain units have been delineated, ranging in size from 0.5 ha (small till ridge) to 41.3 ha, a large
upland area. The mean polygon size is 7.2 ha.

A detailed description of the methodology, the results of the study, and a list of the terrains units are presented in
Appendix D along with the terrain maps.

3.2 Geophysical Investigation Summary

A geophysical investigation field program was commenced on November 7, and finished on November 9, 2017.
During the geophysical investigation, Golder has conducted:

 Electrical resistivity tomography and seismic refraction surveys between Stations 7+280 and 7+775 along
the existing right-of-way (ROW) to provide subsurface details such as soil stratigraphy, relative competency
of bedrock and discontinuities; and,

 A Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey between Stations 7+280, and Stations 7+775 and 8+075 to
provide Westcoast with a contiguous profile of organic soil depths for buoyancy control design along with a
limited number of discrete hand auger locations.

T
A detailed description of the methodology, the results and interpretation of the geophysical investigation are
presented in Appendix E.

3.3 AF
Geotechnical Investigation Scope of Work
The scope of work included advancing three boreholes and eight hand auger holes for the proposed trenchless
pipe installation. The geotechnical investigation commenced on 7 November, 2017, and was finished on
15November, 2017. All the approximate borehole locations were surveyed and selected by Westcoast
representative on site.
R
The scope of work as outlined in the above referenced proposal included the following:

 Review of existing information (e.g. geotechnical feasibility report, surficial geology, bedrock geology, soil
maps, and other pertinent geotechnical related data and reports);
D

 A site reconnaissance;

 A geotechnical drilling investigation to assess the near surface soil and groundwater conditions, and conduct
rock coring investigation if bedrock is encountered;

 Geotechnical laboratory index testing; and

 Preparation of this geotechnical report detailing the factual results of the investigation together with our
geotechnical comments and recommendations regarding the feasibility of the proposed pipeline replacement.

3.3.1 Site Reconnaissance and Utility Locate

In advance of commencing the geotechnical investigation, a site reconnaissance was conducted by Golder and
Westcoast representatives on November 6, 2017. Both Golder and Westcoast retained subcontractors to complete
a BC One Call and onsite sweeps. These were carried out in conjunction with our site reconnaissance.

3.3.2 Drilling Investigation

Three boreholes were drilled (designated AH17-01 to AH17-03); two on the west side of the creek, and one on the
east side of the creek as shown on Figure 2. Gregg’s Drilling and Testing Canada Ltd (Gregg) of Prince George,
BC were subcontracted to Golder to advance the boreholes using their owned and operated track mounted Fraste
MDXL drill rig capable of both solid and hollow stem auger drilling as well as rock coring methods.

WESTCOAST KOBES #3 - GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION

The boreholes were advanced in soil using solid stem augers. In soil, Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) were
conducted at regular depth intervals at each borehole location (approximately every 1.5 meters). Then, upon
encountering weathered bedrock, HQ rock coring method was used to advance the borehole and additional
15 meters into bedrock. Upon completion, all boreholes were backfilled with a cement-bentonite grout mix in
accordance with the requirements of the BC Groundwater Protection Regulation.

Detailed descriptions of the subsurface soil conditions encountered at each borehole location, are presented in
the Record of Borehole Sheets in Appendix B.

Drilling operations were monitored and observed by a member of Golder’s geotechnical staff, who logged the
subsurface soil and groundwater conditions at each borehole location and collected samples for visual

T
classification and laboratory testing. All soil and rock core samples were transported to Golder’s Geotechnical
Laboratory for further examination, classification and testing.

3.3.3 Hand Auger Investigation

AF
A total of eight hand auger holes were advanced by Golder at pre-determined locations along the proposed pipeline
alignment. The results of the auger summary are presented in the Record of Borehole Sheets in Appendix B, and
the Geophysical Investigation in Appendix E Laboratory Testing.

Upon completion of the geotechnical investigation, soil samples and rock core samples were transported to
Golder’s geotechnical laboratory for further examination, classification and testing. The following laboratory tests
R
are in the process of being carried out as part of the laboratory test program:

 Natural water content determinations

 Particle size analyses (hydrometer analysis)

D

 Atterberg Limits

 Analytical tests for evaluation of soil corrosivity

 Uniaxial compressive strength tests on bedrock samples

The above tests are being carried out in accordance with their respective ASTM standards. At the time of preparing
this preliminary report, the only completed tests are the natural water content tests and analytical tests for soil
corrosivity and these are included in Appendix C. The complete laboratory test results will be included in the final
report.

4.0 SUBSURFACE STRATIGRAPHY

The soil and rock descriptions provided in this report are based on accepted standard methods of classification
and identification routinely used in current geotechnical state of practice and are defined in the Method of Soil
Classification and Terms and Terminology and Classification System for Borehole Descriptions and Logs included
in Appendix B. Detailed descriptions of the subsurface conditions encountered in each of the boreholes are
presented on the Record of Borehole Sheets shown in Appendix B. The stratigraphic boundaries shown on the
Record of Borehole Sheets are inferred from noncontinuous sampling, drilling observations, and the coring results.
These boundaries represent transitions between soil and rock types rather than exact planes of geological change.

WESTCOAST KOBES #3 - GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION

The following section describes the stratigraphic units encountered along the proposed pipeline alignment.

4.1 Encountered Subsurface Conditions

4.1.1 Organic Topsoil
Organic topsoil was encountered at ground surface at all borehole and hand auger locations, with the exception
of hand auger location HA17-03 and HA17-04. For the purpose of this report, organic soil thickness is treated as
organic material between ground surface and the top of mineral soil. This report makes no distinction between
subsoil salvaged for land reclamation purposes and the underlying mineral soil.

The encountered topsoil generally consists of brown organic silt, ranging in thickness of up to 0.15 m.

T
4.1.2 Glaciofluvial Sandy Silt
Fine grained non-cohesive sandy silt was encountered at all borehole locations. The encountered sandy silt is
generally described as brown, loose, moist sandy silt with trace gravel ranging in thickness of up to 1.2 meters.

4.1.3
AF
The encountered sandy silt was partially frozen at borehole location AH17-03.

Glaciolacustrine Silty Clay

The predominant mineral soil that was encountered during the geotechnical investigation is lacustrine silty clay
with varying portions of sand and gravel. This silty clay was encountered at all borehole. Based on visual
observations, the silty clay are described as containing some sand, generally brown transitioning to grey at depth,
R
moist, medium plasticity. In general, the relative consistency of this silty clay is described as stiff to very stiff, with
measured SPT N-values ranging from 12 blows/300 mm of penetration to 28 blows/300 mm of penetration. Details
of the encountered silty clay are presented in Table 1.
D

Table 1: Summary of Silty Clay at Kobes #3

Borehole No. Depth Encountered (m) SPT N-Value
AH17-01 1.2 to 4.0 17 to 19
AH17-02 0.6 to 4.3 12 to 28
AH17-03 0.5 to 5.5 13 to 25

4.1.4 Weathered Bedrock

Underlying the silty clay deposits, bedrock comprising mudrocks was encountered at all borehole locations. For
confirmatory purposes, the solid stem auger drilling method continued for additional 3.0 to 3.7 meters into the
bedrock before switching to HQ rock coring methods. Uncorrected SPT blow counts, or N-values, ranged from 43
blows for 0.3 m penetration to 50 blows for 0.08 m penetration (refusal).

All borehole locations were terminated within the mudrocks at approximately 20 meters below existing ground
surface. The obtained rock cores were transported to our laboratory storage at the end of each shift.

Rock core testing results will be included in our final report.

4.2 Groundwater Conditions

Seepage was encountered during the geotechnical drilling investigation at borehole locations AH17-01 and
AH17-02 at depth approximately 6.1 meters below ground surface. This is interpreted as a perched water table
that developed at the fined grained silty clay – bedrock interface.

5.0 GEOTECHNICAL ASSESSMENT

5.1 Geotechnical Parameters
5.1.1 Geotechnical Parameters

T
Based on the results of the geotechnical drilling investigation, the general stratigraphy encountered at the Site is
as follows:

Topsoil; overlying;

Sandy Silt; overlying;

Silty Clay; and

AF
 Bedrock.
R
The underlying bedrock generally comprises weathered mudstone. Recommended ultimate shear strength for the
weathered mudstone is 1 MPa.

5.1.2 Frost Penetration Depth

D

Based on Environment Canada climate data the anticipated frost penetration depth is 2.2 m; consequently, it is
recommended that the pipeline be provided a minimum 2.2 m soil cover.

Frost penetration depths may vary based on soil type, snow cover, and temperatures.

5.2 Seismic Parameters

5.2.1 Seismic Design Values
The National Building Code of Canada 2015 (NBCC 2015) contains updated seismic analysis and design
methodology. Seismic hazard is defined by uniform hazard spectra (UHS) at spectral coordinates of 0.2 seconds,
0.5 seconds, 1.0 seconds and 2.0 seconds and a probability of exceedance of 2 percent in 50 years. Using the
seismic hazard classification calculator, the resulting values for the Kobes 3 Site are presented in Table 2.

5.2.2 Site Class

The NBCC 2015 method uses a site classification system defined by the average soil/bedrock properties
(e.g., shear wave velocity, SPT resistance, undrained soil shear strength, etc.) in the upper 30 metres below the
ground surface. There are 6 site classes from A to F, decreasing in ground stiffness from A, hard rock, to E, soft
soil; with Site Class F used to denote problematic soils (e.g., sites underlain by thick peat deposits and/or
liquefiable soils). The site class is then used to obtain acceleration and velocity-based site coefficients Fa and Fv,
respectively, used to modify the UHS to account for the effects of site-specific soil conditions in design.

Based on the NBCC 2015 and a review of actual subsurface conditions encountered at the Site, a seismic site
response designation of Site Class C is recommended for the site. The Site Class C is based on the SPT ‘N’
values and undrained shear strength of the soils encountered in the boreholes. It should be noted that boreholes

T
were not drilled to depths of 30 m; however, it is expected that consideration in selecting the seismic site
classification will be primarily dominated by the stiff to very stiff silty clay to weathered bedrock encountered at the
site.

5.3.2 Assessment of Aggressiveness to Concrete and Steel

The results presented in Table 3 show the soluble-sulphate content ranged from 0.00061 to 0.00159 percent,
indicate the tested soils are in general, not aggressive towards concrete.

In addition, the test results indicate that there is a moderate corrosion potential towards steel elements in contact
with the ground. Consideration may be given to increasing the thickness of steel elements in contact with the
ground to act as sacrificial steel, corrosion resistant coatings, or cathodic protection to minimize steel corrosion.
The test data should be reviewed by the steel manufacturer, supplier/installer and designer to provide suitable
recommendations for corrosion protection, if required.

WESTCOAST KOBES #3 - GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION

5.4 Construction Considerations

5.4.1 Stripping Depth
The existing organic materials should be completely stripped over the entire footprint of proposed pipeline
alignment and proof-rolled. Based on the drilling investigation, surficial topsoil thicknesses or stripping depths are
anticipated to be up to 0.15 m below existing ground surface.

Native silty clay proposed for re-use as fill should be stockpiled separately from the organic topsoil, and should be
protected from freezing and/or wetting.

5.4.2 Temporary Excavations

T
All temporary and permanent excavations, including trenches, must be carried out in accordance with the British
Columbia Occupational Health and Safety Regulation (OHSR). Specifically, Part 20 of the OHSR deals with
construction, excavation and demolition.

AF
Control of groundwater seepage (if encountered) is expected to be managed by pumping from properly
constructed and filtered sumps located within the excavations. Care should be taken to direct surface water away
from the open excavations. The easterly section of the site is expected to have higher ground water and will have
sections where it will remain near the ground surface through the year.

Based on the results of the investigation, it is anticipated that temporary excavation open cut slopes as steep as
R
1.5 Horizontal: 1 Vertical (1.5H: 1V) may be utilized when personnel or equipment are to enter. Flatter side slopes
will likely be required over the portion of side slopes where seepage enters the excavation or areas of deeper
sandy silt. Steeper temporary slopes may be feasible, subject to detailed inspection and confirmation by
experienced geotechnical personnel. Shallower side slopes may be required if the excavations indicate the
D

presence of fissures. Stockpiling or storage of excavated spoils, construction materials or heavy equipment shall
not be permitted within 2 m of the crest of excavation slopes to prevent overloading of the crest.

5.4.3 Permanent Slopes

Permanent slopes should be cut no steeper than 2H: 1V and similarly, permanent embankment slopes should be
no steeper than 2.5H: 1V, and road embankment fills for support of heavy traffic loads should be no steeper than
3H: 1V. These recommendations are provided on the assumption that fills are compacted to a minimum 98 percent
of the Standard Proctor Maximum Dry Density (SPMDD).

It is recommended that suitable re-vegetation or other erosion protection measures be installed as soon as
possible to minimize the risk of excessive softening or erosion of the exposed slopes.

Ditches should be provided with side slopes no steeper than 2.5H: 1V.

Within the weathered bedrock, permanent cut slopes should be no steeper than 1.25H: 1V. As the properties and
particularly the weathering state of the bedrock may vary across the site, it is recommended that a qualified
geotechnical engineer review the exposed rock should slopes steeper than 1.25H: 1V be required or considered.

5.5 Buried Pipeline Design (Bi-Linear Soil Springs)

This section provides general recommendations for pipeline design for typical overland sections which are to be
used in conjunction with the Guidelines for the Design of Buried Steel Pipe (American Lifelines Alliance, 2005).

It is assumed that the following design philosophy will be adopted for analyses of pipe stress using soil springs:

 When analyzing loading cases for changes in temperature and pressure, it is assumed that the loading rate
is considered sufficiently quick for cohesive soils such that the undrained shear strength is a suitable
parameter to estimate the resistance of the soil. In these cases the peak effective friction angle would be
zero. For other loading cases the use of undrained shear strength may not be considered suitable and should
be discussed with the geotechnical engineer.

T
 All granular soils should be modelled as frictional material using the peak effective friction angle with no
cohesion.

AF
If the pipe traverses through poorly drained areas it is recommended that a submerged unit weight be used.
Otherwise it is recommended that the bulk unit weight be used.
If modelling identifies areas of high stress or displacement the stress engineer and the geotechnical engineer
should discuss the details of those bends to ensure that the geotechnical soil parameters being used are
considered suitable.

R
The geotechnical soil parameters are provided as a range of values so that the stress analyses could
investigate what would be the worst case (i.e. lower friction angle may not necessarily be the ‘worst’ case).
It is the responsibility of the stress engineers to satisfy themselves that the geotechnical soil parameters used
from the table below produce a reasonable worst case.
D

 Engineering judgment is required when using these geotechnical parameters and continued discussion
between the stress engineer and the geotechnical engineer is highly recommended.

The geotechnical soil parameters for use with bi-linear soil springs are provided in Table 4. These soil parameters
should be used in conjunction with Table 5 which contains the start and stop of each of the terrain units by kilometer
post. The parameters provide in Table 4 are for pipe stress calculation purposes only and should not be used for
foundation design.

5.6 Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Crossing

This section of the report provides engineering discussion and recommendations for the geotechnical design
aspects of the proposed Horizontal Direction Drill (HDD) crossing. The information in this portion of the report is
provided for planning and design purposes for the guidance of the design engineers. Where comments are made
on construction, they are provided only in order to highlight aspects of construction which could affect the design
of the project. Contractors bidding on or undertaking any work at the site should examine the factual results of the
investigation, satisfy themselves as to the adequacy of the information for construction and make their own
interpretation of the factual data as it affects their proposed construction techniques, schedule, equipment
capabilities, costs, sequencing and the like.

WESTCOAST KOBES #3 - GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION

5.6.1 Inferred Subsurface Conditions

In general, the subsoil conditions are considered suitable for HDD installation methods although there will be
challenges to be overcome through proper equipment selection and fluid pressures.

The stiff to very stiff clays at this site will generally be readily penetrated during directional drilling; however, are
susceptible to hydraulic fracturing with increased fluid pressures.

The presence of medium plastic clays can be problematic. Medium plastic clays have a tendency to swell when
exposed to moisture (i.e. drill fluid) which could cause problems during the bore reaming or installing the pipe.
Swelling or expanding clays are not represented in the logs and the assessment of plasticity is still underway
(awaiting Atterberg test results); however, the HDD contractor should be aware of the possibility for expanding

T
and swelling clays.

Bedrock was encountered at all augerhole locations at elevations ranging from approximately 699 to 704 meters

AF
above sea level (approximately 4.0 to 5.5 meters below ground surface). Based on field observation only, the
bedrock consisted of weathered mudrocks. Based on field observation, the drilling fluid had almost 100% return
rate during coring. The laboratory testing results for the bedrock are currently underway and will be reported in the
final version.

5.6.2 Hydraulic Fracturing / Drilling Fluid Pressures

The potential for hydraulic fracturing (fracout) to occur during directional drilling is influenced by several factors,
R
including the depth of cover below ground surface, the ground conditions (including fractured or high permeability
materials), the hydrostatic head acting in the drill hole and the dynamic drilling fluid pressures that occur during
the drilling process. The HDD contractor and/or designer should complete a hydraulic fracture analysis before
D

finalizing the drill path. This evaluation should incorporate the specific equipment, materials, drill path geometry
and drill plan that will be used. Deeper burial depths, shorter bore lengths or a combination of these modifications
may be considered to reduce frac-out potential.

To minimize frac-outs, a clean, engineered HDD bore should be constructed in accordance with good industry
practice. This includes monitoring of variables including, but not limited to, drilling fluid pressures, fluid and solids
return rates and advance rates. Advancing the pilot bore drill bit with insufficient drilling fluid flow rates or unsuitable
properties, for example, may lead to insufficient cuttings removal and increased downhole drilling fluid pressures.
Selection and monitoring of these parameters, including design of the drilling fluid (with additives if needed), is the
responsibility of the HDD contractor. It is recommended that the HDD contractor utilize downhole measurement
devices to monitor drilling fluid pressures during pilot drilling. It is understood that the details of the HDD crossing
plan such as work space requirements, pipe layout, pilot bore tracking details, pipe stress analysis, frac analysis,
and excavations are being completed by others, and therefore are not discussed in this report.

The drilling fluid pressures that will develop within the drill hole must not be allowed to exceed the static confining
stresses in soil encountered below the river. Once initiated, hydraulic fractures occurring in soil will lead to fluid
loss and may continue to spread vertically causing fluid movement towards the surface (frac-out). Therefore, the
mud pressure in the drill hole should be carefully monitored and controlled while drilling.

WESTCOAST KOBES #3 - GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION

Drilling fluid and cutting return to the rig should be monitored as well as visually inspecting the condition of the
ground surface for fluid release. In addition, a drilling fluid management plan assessing the properties of the drilling
mud should be implemented to control loss of drilling fluid into higher permeable zones. A properly designed drill
plan that minimizes excessive drilling pressure and stationary circulation within high permeable zones is also
recommended to prevent scoured zones with an increased borehole annulus. The potential for formation of mud
rings, poor cutting clearance and difficulty pulling the pipe should be monitored during the drilling process to ensure
a clean, well-engineered bore is maintained. If reduced cutting returns or pressure spikes are recorded at the rig
occur, then drilling should be stopped and mitigative measures considered and incorporated.

Environmental monitoring of the crossing location should be carried out during construction. In addition,
contingency plans for drilling fluid containment should be implemented in the event of unexpected fluid release to

T
the ground surface or water body. Maintaining the minimum recommended depths of cover below the crossing
should reduce the possibility of fluid release by confining the drill path within more consolidated materials due to
the confining stress of the overlying soil.

5.6.3 AF
Entry and Exit Points
It is anticipated that the HDD entry and exit points will be at the existing ground surface. It is anticipated that
shallow excavations will be constructed at the HDD entry and exit points to assist with drilling fluid management.
Temporary excavations will be required following completion of the HDD installation to connect the pipe with the
adjacent trenched sections of pipeline.
R
Temporary excavations at this site (assumed to be less than 4 m below ground surface) are anticipated to be
advanced within the stiff to very stiff silty clay.

If the location of the entry or exit points is within close proximity to existing facilities, care will be required to ensure
D

that adequate support is provided for all existing utilities and portions of roadways which are located in the zone
of influence of the excavation, as defined by a line drawn from the base of the excavation upward at an inclination
of 1H: 1V. If required, properly designed temporary support systems could be used to limit the extent of the
excavations and reduce potential impacts on adjacent roadways or services.

5.6.4 Geotechnical Inspection and Testing

A program of geotechnical inspection and monitoring should be implemented during construction of the crossing,
as discussed above, to ensure that the intent of the design recommendations provided is being met and that the
various project criteria are being achieved; and this should be reviewed prior to the start of construction.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION AND LIMITATIONS

OF THIS REPORT (cont’d)

Unless otherwise stated, the suggestions, recommendations and opinions given in this
report are intended only for the guidance of the Client in the design of the specific
project. The extent and detail of investigations, including the number of test holes,
necessary to determine all of the relevant conditions which may affect construction costs
would normally be greater than has been carried out for design purposes. Contractors
bidding on, or undertaking the work, should rely on their own investigations, as well as
their own interpretations of the factual data presented in the report, as to how subsurface
conditions may affect their work, including but not limited to proposed construction
techniques, schedule, safety and equipment capabilities.

Soil, Rock and Groundwater Conditions: Classification and identification of soils,

rocks, and geologic units have been based on commonly accepted methods employed in
the practice of geotechnical engineering and related disciplines. Classification and
identification of the type and condition of these materials or units involves judgment, and

T
boundaries between different soil, rock or geologic types or units may be transitional
rather than abrupt. Accordingly, Golder does not warrant or guarantee the exactness of
the descriptions.
AF
Special risks occur whenever engineering or related disciplines are applied to identify
subsurface conditions and even a comprehensive investigation, sampling and testing
program may fail to detect all or certain subsurface conditions. The environmental,
geologic, geotechnical, geochemical and hydrogeologic conditions that Golder interprets
R
to exist between and beyond sampling points may differ from those that actually exist. In
addition to soil variability, fill of variable physical and chemical composition can be
present over portions of the site or on adjacent properties. The professional services
D

retained for this project include only the geotechnical aspects of the subsurface
conditions at the site, unless otherwise specifically stated and identified in the
report. The presence or implication(s) of possible surface and/or subsurface
contamination resulting from previous activities or uses of the site and/or resulting from
the introduction onto the site of materials from off-site sources are outside the terms of
reference for this project and have not been investigated or addressed.

Soil and groundwater conditions shown in the factual data and described in the report are
the observed conditions at the time of their determination or measurement. Unless
otherwise noted, those conditions form the basis of the recommendations in the report.
Groundwater conditions may vary between and beyond reported locations and can be
affected by annual, seasonal and meteorological conditions. The condition of the soil,
rock and groundwater may be significantly altered by construction activities (traffic,
excavation, groundwater level lowering, pile driving, blasting, etc.) on the site or on
adjacent sites. Excavation may expose the soils to changes due to wetting, drying or
frost. Unless otherwise indicated the soil must be protected from these changes during
construction.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION AND LIMITATIONS

OF THIS REPORT (cont’d)

Sample Disposal: Golder will dispose of all uncontaminated soil and/or rock samples 90
days following issue of this report or, upon written request of the Client, will store
uncontaminated samples and materials at the Client’s expense. In the event that actual
contaminated soils, fills or groundwater are encountered or are inferred to be present, all
contaminated samples shall remain the property and responsibility of the Client for
proper disposal.

Follow-Up and Construction Services: All details of the design were not known at the
time of submission of Golder’s report. Golder should be retained to review the final
design, project plans and documents prior to construction, to confirm that they are
consistent with the intent of Golder’s report.

During construction, Golder should be retained to perform sufficient and timely

observations of encountered conditions to confirm and document that the subsurface

T
conditions do not materially differ from those interpreted conditions considered in the
preparation of Golder’s report and to confirm and document that construction activities
AF
do not adversely affect the suggestions, recommendations and opinions contained in
Golder’s report. Adequate field review, observation and testing during construction are
necessary for Golder to be able to provide letters of assurance, in accordance with the
requirements of many regulatory authorities. In cases where this recommendation is not
followed, Golder’s responsibility is limited to interpreting accurately the information
encountered at the borehole locations, at the time of their initial determination or
R
measurement during the preparation of the Report.

Changed Conditions and Drainage: Where conditions encountered at the site differ
D

significantly from those anticipated in this report, either due to natural variability of
subsurface conditions or construction activities, it is a condition of this report that Golder
be notified of any changes and be provided with an opportunity to review or revise the
recommendations within this report. Recognition of changed soil and rock conditions
requires experience and it is recommended that Golder be employed to visit the site with
sufficient frequency to detect if conditions have changed significantly.

Drainage of subsurface water is commonly required either for temporary or permanent

installations for the project. Improper design or construction of drainage or dewatering
can have serious consequences. Golder takes no responsibility for the effects of drainage
unless specifically involved in the detailed design and construction monitoring of the
system.

Dual Symbol — A dual symbol is two symbols separated by
a hyphen, for example, GP-GM, SW-SC and CL-ML.
For non-cohesive soils, the dual symbols must be used when
the soil has between 5% and 12% fines (i.e. to identify
transitional material between “clean” and “dirty” sand or
gravel.
For cohesive soils, the dual symbol must be used when the
liquid limit and plasticity index values plot in the CL-ML area
of the plasticity chart (see Plasticity Chart at left).

Borderline Symbol — A borderline symbol is two symbols

separated by a slash, for example, CL/CI, GM/SM, CL/ML.
A borderline symbol should be used to indicate that the soil
has been identified as having properties that are on the
transition between similar materials. In addition, a borderline
symbol may be used to indicate a range of similar soil types
within a stratum.
Note 1 – Fine grained materials with PI and LL that plot in this area are named (ML) SILT with
slight plasticity. Fine-grained materials which are non-plastic (i.e. a PL cannot be measured) are
named SILT.
Note 2 – For soils with <5% organic content, include the descriptor “trace organics” for soils with
between 5% and 30% organic content include the prefix “organic” before the Primary name.

Description of Discontinuities:

Feature Type: Geological description of prominent and distinct discontinuities within the rock, indicating
whether the discontinuity is a joint, bedding (plane joint), shear, or vein.
Shape: Planarity (or shape) of the discontinuity surface at the scale of the cored rock.
R

Roughness: Small scale roughness or “feel” of the discontinuity surface at the scale of the cored rock.

Infill Type: Mineral or soil composition of the stain (ST), alteration (SA), discontinuous or complete
coating (DC/CC) or infilling (IN).

OTHER ROCK LOG DEFINITIONS

Total Core Recovery (TCR): Records the total cumulative length of all core recovered in the core barrel, and
expressed as a percentage of the total length drilled.

Rock Quality Designation (RQD): The total cumulative length of sound core recovered in lengths greater than
10 cm, as measured along the centreline axis of the core, and expressed as a percentage per defined interval
e.g. the core length recovered in a core barrel. The 10 cm index length is independent of core size, and is
applicable to BQ, NQ, HQ, PQ, 4-inch, and 6-inch core sizes.

Alpha Angle: The maximum angle of dip measured between the discontinuity plane and the core axis
(0° = parallel to core axis; 90° = perpendicular to core axis)
