Technical-Vocational-Livelihood Track (TVL) / Information and

Communication Technology (ICT) strand

Introduction

Computer system servicing is one of the most important track for

students in this modern generation. As stated by Cornel (2005) computer

literacy skills are taught because they lay the foundation for developing a

critical understanding of more information age help students make effective

use of computers, both in the classroom and workplace setting. Villanueva

(2015) defined computer systems servicing as it covers basic and common

competencies such as installing, maintaining configuring and diagnosing

computer systems and network. It is a blanket term applied to the act of

supporting and maintaining the computer hardware. The development of

technologies have made some great innovations and altered how we live our

daily lives (Dondoyano, 2016). According to Lubian (2007), teachers touch the

future of the learner. Former Presidents Arroyo called for a better integration

of ICT into the philippine education system to improve the quality of learning

and none the computer skills of young filipinos.

Nowadays, the track of computer system servicing is now being taught

in Grade 11 and 12 under the track of Technical-Vocational Livelihood track in

Information and Communication Technology (TVL-ICT). And as a result, many

students have developed their technical skills with the help of hands-on

activities. Hands-on activities such as assembly and disassembly, Ethernet

2
Local Area Network (LAN) cabling, troubleshooting computers, software

installation, and computer maintenance. These hands-on activities can be

handy in acquiring jobs by getting certificates that can be added to your

résumé, such as the National Certificate II (NCII) under the Technical

Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) program.

However, there are challenges to learning the course. The difficulty

experienced by students in developing skills is not only due to a lack of

practice but also to insufficient assistance and materials (Hwang et al., 2011).

As a result, a lot of students are having a hard time during the performance of

hands-on activities. As students’ progress on their current track, hands-on

activities have become more challenging for students and require sufficient

time, patience, and adequate guidance from the teachers for them to develop

skills.

It is stated by Mukalele Roger (2013) that the demand offer ICT

learning has been tremendous and the number of teachers who are trained

cannot meet the demands. Lack of computers; computers are still very

expensive and despite spirited efforts by the government agencies. David

Nagel (2013) also states that in past reports, the challenges have centered

largely on reluctance on the part of administrators and teachers, Lack of

preparation and lack of support on finding. This year’s findings followed

largely along these lines as well, though some new challenges were identified

as well.

In Senior High School of San Nicolas III, at Garnet St., Green Valley,

San Nicolas III, City of Bacoor, Cavite, Philippines. Students have faced major

challenges such as the lack of materials needed during hands-on activities,

3
insufficient updates to students regarding hands-on activities, and the lack of

time needed to develop skills for the hands-on activities. Students are also

experiencing gaps on each lesson that have been taught by the CSS teacher.

It gets progressively more difficult for learners to fully understand exactly what

tasks they're required to complete or which topics they must review for them

to pass the examination.

For that reason, this study aimed to describe the challenges that the

Grade 11 CSS students experience during the hands-on activities on

computer system servicing and describe their ways of accomplish tasks when

they encounter difficult challenges during CSS class. This study might benefit

to students on their ways of studying the CSS track and also to the

improvements on ways of teaching of computer system servicing teachers of

SHS in San Nicolas III. Furthermore, this research may offer an informative

starting point for additional researches.

Statement of the Problem

The goal of this study is to discover more about the challenges and

obstacles that the Grade 11 ICT CSS students have encountered when

participating in hands-on activities. The following queries are addressed by

the researchers:

1. What are the challenges encountered by students during the

hands-on activities in their specialized subject, Computer System Servicing?

2. What are the usual challenges faced by students towards

hands-on activities?

3. What are the strategies used by students to successfully

perform the particular activity?

4
Scope and Delimitation

This study will be confined to exploring learners’ autonomy and

recognizing the strategies and challenges encountered by students. The

primary subjects of this research will be the Grade 11 ICT Computer System

Servicing students of Senior High School San Nicolas III for the academic

year 2023-2024. The scope of this study will be limited to ten (10) Grade 11

students who are enrolled under the Technical-Vocational Livelihood track

and Information and Communication Technology (TVL-ICT) strand in

specializing in Computer System Servicing at San Nicolas III.

Moreover, researchers will be the primary tool for this study. An

interview guide will also be used. The interview guide will serve as a list of

topics that the researchers hope to cover during the course of the interview.

Our interview guide would be composed of three (3) questions based on the

objectives of the study. Impartially, this interview question will be used to elicit

information regarding participants' experiences, strategies, and challenges

associated with hands-on activities. In addition, to keep track of the

participant's comments, the interviews will be recorded using a voice recorder

on a cellphone. Respondents and researchers will have individualized

interviews to gather data.

Significance of the Study

The outcome of this research will be beneficial in providing the strand

Information and Communication Technology specializing in Computer System

Servicing of Senior High School in San Nicolas III with new strategies and

5
ways to engage with their hands-on activities. The research would also benefit

the following:

Students – This study may serve as a reference for students

throughout their hands-on activities that they would perform.

Teachers – This study may help teachers to improve their ways of

teaching and improve the time management for students to improve their

skills inside the CSS laboratory.

Researchers – This study may allow researchers to improve their

understanding of the common difficulties faced and strategies used towards

hands-on activities.
