● Origin and Cultural Context of the Dance

Ballet dance developed during the Italian Renaissance, before evolving in France and
Russia into a concert dance meant for public performance. This is in the form of a ballet,
in which the dance is choreographed with classical music.

● Genre

Classic, romantic, neoclassical and contemporary.

● Style-Specific Dance Techniques

1. Vaganova method: This method emphasizes flexibility, strength, and endurance. It also
gives equal importance to arms and legs in performances.
2. Cecchetti method: The choreography focuses on all parts of the body working and
moving together to create beautiful lines through ballon (when ballerinas appear
lightweight as they jump), elevations, balance, and eight port de bras (arm movement).

Common Dance Terms and Steps

First Position: heels together, toes pointed outwards to the side


Second Position: legs are moved apart, hip width apart, toes pointed outwards to the side
Third Position: feet pointed outwards, one foot placed in front of the other with front
heel touching the back foot’s instep
Fourth Position:
Open: feet pointed outwards, with legs in third position but spread apart
Crossed: feet pointed outwards, legs spread apart with one foot placed in front of the
other, and the front foot is placed opposite the toes of the back foot
Fifth Position: feet pointed outwards, legs crossed and feet touching, with the heel of
one foot placed beside the toes of the other

Ballroom

Ballroom dance is a type of partner dance originating at the end of the sixteenth century
in France. Commonly used as shorthand for any partner dance

American Smooth:
These dances are characterized by their graceful, flowing movements, and the freedom to
break away from the traditional closed dance hold, allowing for more expressive and
creative choreography..

International Ballroom:
These dance styles are characterized by their precise technique, formalized movement
patterns, and emphasis on maintaining a closed dance hold throughout the routine.
Dancers in this style often strive for elegance, sophistication, and seamless connection
with their partner.

● Common Dance Terms and Steps

Step forward with your left foot. Land softly on your heel and roll it to the ball of the
foot to give it a light, airy feel.
Step to the side with your right foot so that it is parallel to your left foot. Your feet
should be side by side, a bit more than shoulder-width apart.
Move your left foot together to your right foot. Your feet should be touching and side
by side to each other.
Step backward with your right foot. Keep your upper body straight and relaxed and
release the toe of your left foot to allow for an easier big step.
Step to the side with your left foot so it is parallel to your right foot. Again, your feet
should be side by side a bit wider than shoulder-width apart.
Move your right foot together to your left foot Your feet should be touching and side
by side to each other.

Hip-Hop

Hip-hop dancing refers to a range of street dances that developed in relation to hip hop
music and culture. Hip-hop dancing dates back to the early 1970s in New York and
California, evolving out of Funk and the development of break beat.

● Genre and Style-Specific Dance Techniques

Krumping: This African American form of dance is driven by pure emotion and force.
Krumping is defined by energetic and powerful movements like chest bumping, often
expressing strong feelings in a lyrical way.

Locking: In this style of hip hop dance, the dancer quickly and frequently moves their
body and freezes it in place. It is similar to popping, but holding positions longer than
with popping.

Main Activity (10 minutes)

Direction: Students will choose a dance style and watch a provided video showcasing
their chosen style. After 3 minutes, groups with the same dance style will dance along
with the video's choreography.
