CHECKLIST

25 THINGS TO DO TO BUILD A SAFE WORKPLACE

This list is not exhaustive but gives you important points to consider offering your employees a safe work
environment.

 1. Hire an infrastructure safety consultant while designing your offices. Ensure that you take care
of all emergencies like fire, acts of God like Earthquakes etc.

 2. Offer employees corporate insurance.

 3. Install alarm systems for theft, entry and fire purposes.

 4. Make sure that the workplace complies with all standards of safety as prescribed by the local
authorities.

 5. Maintain a first aid cabinet, post first aid information, including fire, police, and ambulance
numbers, and a poster on how to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

 6. Comply with all hazardous materials reporting requirements, including identification of


hazardous substances.

 7. Clearly mark and keep clear all your exits, aisles, and passages. Provide stairs with slip
resistant surfaces, handrails and proper lighting.

 8. Make sure your equipment contains safety guards, electrical grounding, readily available and
easily identifiable power shut off switches and emergency stop buttons.

 9. When appropriate provide your employees with, and require them to wear, protective clothing
including safety glasses, gloves, hard hats, steel toed boots, headphones, hearing protective
equipment, wrist braces, back support belts, and the like.

 10. Do not allow productivity pressures to compromise safety. This applies especially to large
factories / manufacturing facilities.

 11. Make sure the furniture and equipment you use at the work is ergonomically designed. This
includes chairs, computer keyboards, computer screens, as well as other equipment involving
repetitive physical use.

 12. Address indoor pollution problems through proper ventilation and inspection.

 13. Regularly inspect your equipment for functionality and safety purposes.

 14. Have a safety officer, a safety plan, and conduct safety meetings.

 15. Make sure to send ill employees home before allowing them to work around dangerous
machinery.

 16. Make sure you communicate emergency response plans for fire, earthquakes, hurricanes,
flooding, etc.
 17. Drug test new employees and after accidents.

 18. Clearly set forth smoking prohibitions and participate in anti-smoking campaigns.

 19. Do a criminal reference check for employees in positions of responsibility for elders, infants
and others who are dependant on their care.

 20. Do pre-hire and annual Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) checks for all employees who
drive as part of their job.

 21. Train your employees across all levels in the organization to perform their tasks with complete
safety.

 22. Set in place a policy for any third party vendor that is involved in the upkeep of the safety
standards of your workplace.

 23. Set in place clear demarcated spots for employees to sit at the workspace post COVID-19

 24. Install no touch hand sanitisers to ensure that employees are safely behaving at the
workplace

 24. Run a fire drill every 3 months

 25. Run an earthquake safety and response drill every 3 months
