II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

A cause is the reason why something happened and the effect is the result
of what had happened. Identifying cause and effect relationships within a story
helps students to focus on two important elements of comprehension: what
happens in the story and why it happened.

To understand better, study the picture below. Read the article and answer
the questions that follow.

Look at these sentences and analyze how they differ from each other.

2. The roads in eight villages in Muntinlupa are no longer passable due


to waist-deep flood waters.

The first sentence answers the question why it happened. It is also referred
to as the “cause”.

The second sentence answers the questions what happened. It is also


referred to as the “effect”.
