Mathematics
Quarter 2 – Module 7:
Distance and Midpoint Formula
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
This module is an instrumental material to be used by the learners in the
Public Schools. It is an initiative way to cope-with the goals of continuing
the education despite of the present situation.

It contains nine learning stages; each lesson always starts with the
presentation of Mathematical Concepts. From there the lesson progresses
through various well- rounded mathematical exercises. The content of these
exercises has been structured to suit not only the age level of the learner but
also his experiences at home and in school. What the learner learned in the
previous stages were reinforced by the next stage. And the last stage is the
Reflection, this is a wall were learners will write his understanding about the
lesson.

As facilitator, you are expected to impart the learners on how to use this
module. It is also expected to track and record learners’ progress while
allowing them to manage on their own pace. Lastly, you are expected to
guide and assist the learners as they engaged the exercises in the module.

For the learner:

Welcome to the Mathematics Self-Learning Module on Distance and
Midpoint Formula

This module was pattern to help you, learners, to achieve better learning
outcome and become prepared for the next grade level. This is an approach
that allows you learners to express and solve mathematical problems in a
meaningful and easiest way.

1 Distance and Midpoint Formulas

Let Us Learn!

THE DISTANCE AND MIDPOINT FORMULA

The Distance Formula

To find the distance between two points, add the square of the difference
of the abscissas to the square of the difference of the ordinates and take the
positive square root of the sum.

𝑑 = √(𝑥2 − 𝑥1 )2 + (𝑦2 − 𝑦1 )2

Where:

d = distance
(𝑥1 , 𝑦1 ) = coordinates of the first point
(𝑥2 , 𝑦2 ) =coordinates of the second point

The Midpoint Formula

It is defined as the mathematical equation used to measure the halfway

point between two data points.

Key point:

The midpoint M of the segments joining (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) has the
coordinate.

𝑥1 + 𝑥2 𝑦1 + 𝑦2
(𝑥𝑚 , 𝑦𝑚 ) = ( , )
2 2

Where:
(𝑥𝑚 ,𝑦𝑚 )= coordinates of the midpoint
(𝑥1 ,𝑦1 )= coordinates of the first point
(𝑥2 , 𝑦2 ) = coordinates of the second point

Let Us Study

Where I Am?

The Distance Formula:

𝑑 = √(𝑥2 − 𝑥1 )2 + (𝑦2 − 𝑦1 )2

1. Find the distance (1 , 2) and (6 , 14)

Given: 𝑥1 = 1 𝑦1 = 2
𝑥2 = 6 𝑦2 = 14
Substitute in the formula:

𝑑 = √(𝑥2 − 𝑥1 )2 + (𝑦2 − 𝑦1 )2

= √(6 − 1)2 + (14 − 2)2

= √(5)2 + (12)2

= √25 + 144

= √169

d= 13 units

2. Find the distance between (5 , 1) and (-3 , -5)

Given: 𝑥1 = 5 𝑦1 = 1
𝑥2 = -3 𝑦2 = -5

Substitute in the formula:

𝑑 = √(𝑥2 − 𝑥1 )2 + (𝑦2 − 𝑦1 )2

= √(−3 − 5)2 + (−5 − 1)2

= √(−8)2 + (−6)2

= √64 + 36

= √100

d = 10 units

𝑴 = (𝟐 , 𝟑 )

2. (-3 , 1) and (6 , 1)

Solution:

𝑥1 +𝑥2 𝑦1 +𝑦2

use the Midpoint Formula
𝑥1 + 𝑥2 𝑦1 + 𝑦2
(𝑥𝑚 , 𝑦𝑚 ) = ( , )
