FIRST SEMESTER EXAMINATION 2023/2024 SESSION
COURSE CODE: PHY 314
COURSE TITLE: EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICS III
CREDIT UNIT: 1C
DATE: 21/03/2024 TIME ALLOWED: 2HOURS
INSTRUCTION: Answer All Questions

1.

Connect up the circuit as shown above. Set Rheostat R so the voltage in V and the
current in A are zero. Adjust R so that the voltage V increases in suitable small
steps such as 0.2V from zero to the maximum such as 1V.
Reverse the diode in the circuit and record the value of 1 at a reverse voltage of 1V
and tabulate your readings

i. Plot a graph of I against V for both forward bias and reverse bias.
ii. From the graph, deduce the slope
iii. State two precautions taken to ensure accurate results
iv. A battery of e.m.f. 12 Volts and internal resistance r =1.5 ohms is connected to
an external resistance of 3 ohms. Calculate the current flowing in the circuit and
the potential drop across the internal resistance?

2. The following readings were obtained by a 300-level student in the laboratory.

T2 (S2) 0.71 1.00 1.34 1.82 2.62 4.12
d-2(m-2) 4.34 6.25 8.16 11.11 16.00 25.00
If the relationship between T and d is

T ¿2π √

mgd 2

Where g=10ms-2, m=0.140±0.0001kg, L=0.50±0.0005m.

i. Plot a graph of T2(S2) against d-2 (m-2)
ii From your graph, calculate the moment of inertia, I
iii. Mention three sources of error
iv. State two precautions needed to be considered by the student to ensure precise results
