1. OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE

 To introduce students to the concepts of engineering stress and strain.
 To impart to students basic knowledge to analyze stress and strain in simple mechanical
components and structures subjected to simple uniaxial and plane stress loading conditions for
the purpose of designing such components.
2. PRE-REQUISITE: SD105: Statics
3. CO URS E S YNO PS IS
 Review of equilibrium of forces and free body diagrams. Classification of Loads,
Concepts of stress and strain: internal effects of forces, axial tension test, modulus of
elasticity, stress-strain relations in uni-axial loading, Poisson's ratio, strain energy; Analysis of
plane stress and strain: transformation of plane stress, Principal stresses. Mohr's stress circle;
Introduction to 3D state of stress.
4. COURSE TEACHING OUTLINE
 Introduction: Review of equilibrium of forces and free body diagrams
 Classification of Loads: with respect to time, area location and direction of application
 Stress and Strain: definition, notation. sign convention. stress matrix.
 One Dimensional State of Stress: Practical examples of 1D stresses; Analysis of 1D stress;
analytical method and graphical method (Mohr's stress circle for 1D stress)
 Properties of material behavior under axial tension and compression: Ductile materials,
brittle materials, tension test, compression test, vol. stain, factor of safety
 Plane (2D) State of stress: Practical examples of 2D stresses; Analysis. of 2D stress; principal
stresses and maximum shear stress: Analytical method and graphical method (Mohr's stress circle for
2D state of stress): 3D state of stress: 3D Mohr diagram
 Plane (2D) state of strain: Analytical method. graphical method (Mohr's strain circle for 2D state
of stress).

modulus), modulus of rigidity (shear modulus)
 Strain Energy on stress-strain analysis
 Material performance and selection: performance index using stress strain curves, specific
modulus, specific strength, toughness curves
5. MODE OF DELIVERY OF THE COURSE
 2 hours of lectures per week on Mon and Frid from 07.00 to 08.00 am in Theater 1. Lecturer (Dr.
Ngesa Ezekiel will give detailed explanations of all the topics above in class, summary of notes
for all the lectures will be sent to the class representatives. 1 hr tutorial every week for 4 tutorial
groups (A tutorial sheet will be given every week).
6. MODE OF ASSESSMENT OF THE COURSE
 CA will be simple average of 2 tests (T1 and T2). University Exam at the end of the semester
Final grade, FG = 0.4 x (T1+T2)/2 +0.6 x UE.
