Title:
Calculation of GSM and ends/inch and picks/inch

Introduction:
Theory:
GSM( grams per square meter) of fabric is calculated with the help of weight of
fabric. Depends on ends/inch, picks/inch and on count.
GSM = weight of fabric*100
When GSM is above 200 then fabric is heavy weight fabric. For knitted fabric GSM
is 80 to 120. For home textile GSM is 150 to 200. For denim GSM is 380 to 450.

Objective:
 To calculate GSM of fabric.
 To calculate ends/inch and picks per inch.

Materials:
Woven fabric, circular cutter, rube pad, weighting balance, magnifying glass,
scale.

Procedure:
 Take a piece of woven fabric and calculate its ends per inch and picks per
inch.
 Picks and ends are calculated by using a magnifier glass having a scale
mentioned on it (also take help of sharp point of a pin).
 Now, cut your fabric with the help of a GSM cutter into some pieces.
 Take a weight balance and weight your fabric pieces that were cut.
 Calculate GSM of each piece of fabric with the help of formula
GSM = weight of fabric*100
o After calculating GSM of all pieces of fabric, take out average of it.

TT-508
Calculations:
Ends per sq. inch = 75
Picks per sq. inch = 58
Weight 1 = 1.435g = 1.435 * 100 = 143.5g
Weight 2 = 1.45g = 1.45 * 100 = 145g
Weight 3 = 1.438g = 1.438 * 100 = 143.8g
Average GSM = 144.1g

Precautions:
o Wrinkles and creases should be removed from woven fabric. Otherwise
results may deviate.
o Warp and Weft of fabric should be identified correctly.
o During the calculations of warps (ends) per inch and weft (picks) per inch
magnifying glass should be put properly.
o Circular GSM cutter should be handled properly.
o Weight balance should be set at zero reading.
