9. DISMANTLING AND ASSEMBLY 9-1. GENERAL The dismantling procedure for each iten of the winch is descriped in the text. When striping down the equipment for repair or renewal of parts, the dismantling should be carried out in same succession as descriped. Assembly should be in opposite succession, if nothing otherwise is stated. See also chapter 1, DESCRIPTION, for description of the specific item materials and {it between the various shafts — bearings — bearings houses, ete. Before assembly clean all parts and replace worn parts with new ones. Don’t forget retaining rings at asseably. WELDING ON OR AROUND THE WINCH If it is necessary to weld to the winch frame or foundation, always place the welding ground as close to the weld area as possible. Never ground to a shaft unless welding is being done to the shaft or a part tightly fixed to the shaft. Grounding to the frame or foundation and welding to a part on the shaft, or vice versa, can cause an arcing of the current through the bearings and result in severe damage to the bearing surface. 9-2. WAPPING HEAD, group No. 32.4 Hain shaft \ DISMANRLING 1. Remove the bolts, pos. 202 and disc, pos. 02 at the end of the main shaft The best device doe withdrawal of the warping head is a portable hydraulic press with a capacity of about 20~30tons. The warping head is also equipped with two holes (32) for withdrawal, 2. Support the warping head by a wire strap or sim Weight of warping head, see SPECIFICATIONS (2). 3. Pull of the warping head by means of the hydr. Drive out the bushing Do not heat the hose when dismantling. The bearing bush will expand more than the boss and it will become even tighter. ‘ASSEMBLY: Before driving in a new bearing bush (not split bearings) it should be cooled don to about -20 (4° F) and/or the boss heated a little. Remove warping head, bearing bracket or other equipment outside the drum. The drum can now be slid alone the shaft, but as it is quite heavy it is necessary to have sone kind of lifting device available at the shaft end. A temporary device of the tripod puller type (a block and tackle on top of the Tripod) may do the job, but it has certain drawbacks. The tripod has to move along the shaft, and if it is not fitted with wheels this cannot be done without shifting the lift while the drum still has to be supported If a cargo derrick or a crane or a crane is available there is no problem 9-6 (9-5) DRUN BEARING RENEWAL. Do not heat the boss when dismantling. The bearing bush will expand more than the boss and it will become even tighter. 4. Drive the bushings out with a sledge and a round steel bar (at least | 1/2” dia.) from the opposite side of the drum Move the bar along the edge of the bushing in order to make it come out evenly. Unscrew the top of the gear cover from the gear frame and lift it off. 4, With a wire strap through the main gear wheel and around the longest part of the main shaft these should be lifted straight up. To get the gear wheel off the shaft a portable hydraulic press with a capacily of about 20 to 30 tons should be used. 5. Use an arrangement as shown on the sketch and pull off the gear wheel. The pinion can now be stripped down. 9-10 (9-7) ROLLER BEARING INSTALLATION PROCEDURE The spherical roller bearings are a precision built item and require careful handling in order to obtain the long service life and high load carrying characteristics associated with anti-friction bearings. For the most part, all internal running clearances are controlled by means of very accurate fits between the shaft 0.D., bores and bearing dimensions. If bearings are removed and are to be reused, the I inner and outer races and roller assemblies of each bearing must be kept together and reinstalled exactly as they came off. It is always necessary to completely replace any roller bearing that fails, even though only one part of the bearing shows damage. Since the running clearances of these bearings are extremely small, excessive clearances, worn or grooved raceways, and any pitting or {laking of the parts is indicative of failure and the entire bearing should b changed as soon as possible. Most roller bearings are assembled to their shafts by means of shrink kits. Ref. bearing fit date under DESCRIPTION, 1). Damaged or worn bearings and raceways can be remove by driving them off the shaft with a bar and hammer. They can be cut off the shaft with a burning torch, but care must be taken not to born into the shafts, When mounting a roller bearing it should always be heated in an oil both to approx. 90~100C (195~210" F). Be certain that both the oil and the container are very clean. If the oil container is in direct contact the bearings will not rest on the bottom Do not leave the bearings in the oil bath longer than three minutes. Do not heat the bearings with a torch unless it is the only possible means available. When it is necessary to use a torch, it should be used only by an experienced welder or mechanic. Hold the torch at least six inches away from the bearing and keep the torch moving at all times. Heat the bearing and keep the torch moving at all touch. Use tempel-Stick. DO NOT OVERHEAT THE BEARING. Overhearing draws the demper of the metal and makes the bearing soft. oil (9-7) Once the heated bearing is in position on the shaft, hold it in place until it cools. NEVER USE WATER OR ANY OTHER LIQUID TO COOL A HOT BEARING. Rapid cooling will cause the surface of the races and rolled to “Check” or crack and the bearing will fail immendiately. Never strike 2 roller bearing with a steel hammer. If the bearing must be driven into position, us wood or a soft hammer and strike lightly. If the inner races of the bearing is t be positioned by means of a hydraulic press, use @ mounting tube which has an inside diameter slightly larger than the shaft and an 0.D. not to exceed the outer diameter of the inner race. The tube must be faced square on both ends, thoroughly clean inside, and long enough to clear the end of the shaft after bearing is mounted. If the outer race is to be pressed into the housing, the 0.D. of the mounting tube should be sightly smaller than the housing bore and the inside diameter not less than the 1.D. of the outer race. Always lubricate the shaft or housing before installing the bearing. Clean white lead, or an anti-seize compound, is the best lubricant for this purpose. Do not remove @ new bearing from the box or wrapping until it is to be installed. Protect it from dirt and other foreign matter at all times. If a bearing must be cleaned, use clean kerosene or other solvent. Before fitting flange bearing bouses theated slightly) let the roller bearings cool down to normal temperature. 9-12 10.
