INTRODUCTION:
We start with a background to the electrochemical nature of corrosion se ng the scene as to the energe c
driving force for corrosion and the electromo ve force produced by galvanic cells. EMF voltages can be affected
by both temperature and concentra on, ie the Nernst Equa on. Pourbaix developed the Nernst equa on into a
corrosion poten al map, which we use to highlight when corrosion is possible or not possible.

However, the thermodynamic poten al of corrosion occurs at zero current, and does not take into account the
effect of constant current on voltages. For corrosion we need to understand the kine cs of electrode processes,
best explained by construc ng Evans diagrams. This finally allows us to see the true complexity of corrosion and
the difficulty in predic on. This is a lot of extremely complex chemistry, but without it we cannot understand the
causes of corrosion.
