List of ASME B31 Codes

B31 Code for pressure piping, developed by American Society of Mechanical Engineers –
ASME, covers Power Piping, Fuel Gas Piping, Process Piping, Pipeline Transportation Systems
for Liquid Hydrocarbons and Other Liquids, Refrigeration Piping and Heat Transfer Components
and Building Services Piping. ASME B31 was earlier known as ANSI B31. Here is a list of
standards covered under ASME B31.

Sr. Number Title

This Code is specifically focused on power piping, providing

requirements for the design, installation, and maintenance of
1 B31.1 Power Piping piping systems within power plants. This code addresses
critical aspects such as material selection, pressure ratings,
pipe sizing, fabrication, and welding procedures.

This Code covers the design, fabrication, installation, and

testing of piping systems for fuel gases such as natural gas,
manufat cured gas (očvrsli gas), liquefied petroleum gas
2 B31.2 Fuel Gas Piping
(LPG)-air mixtures above the upper combustible limit, liquefied
petroleum gas (LPG) in the gaseous phase, or mixtures of
these gases.

This Code contains requirements for piping typically found in

petroleum refineries; chemical, pharmaceutical, textile, paper,
semiconductor, and cryogenic plants; and related processing
plants and terminals.

What is the difference between ASME B31 3 and B31 5?

If you are designing a refrigeration piping system you would

use the ASME B31. 5 Code for Refrigeration Piping. If you are
not designing a piping system associated with a refrigeration
system, you could (with the owner's permission) use the ASME
B31. 3 Code for Process Piping assuming that the scope of

What is the difference between ASME B31 3 and B31 9?

Both codes allow an Initial Service Leak Test instead of a

Hydrostatic Test, but B31. 9 is stricter, because it allows this
substitution only if the system meets the pressure and
temperature limitations indicated on page 45, while B31. 3 has
no specific limitations and leaves this decision to the owner
(page 81, parag. 345.1(a) and page 84, subsection 345.7).

ASME B31. 5 covers refrigerant, heat transfer components, and

secondary coolant piping for temperatures as low as -320°F (-196°C),
whether erected on the premises or factory assembled. Users are
advised that other piping Code Sections may provide requirements for
refrigeration piping in their respective jurisdictions.

stations, holders and fabricated assemblies. Its principles,
processes and approaches apply to the entire system for all
pipeline systems.
