Paragraph Explanation

In One of Us is Lying by Karen McMannus, there are multiple circumstances where Jake is

being controlling over Addy, and that he sometimes ruins her self-esteem. The song “Insecure”

(clean version) by Bryson Tiller and Jazmine Sullivan relates to this since it mentions a boy

being manipulative to a girl, and her questioning his actions. The first part of One of Us is Lying

that relates to a part of the song is the quote “ ‘You wearing that, Ads?’ It’s not a criticism,

exactly, but I’m in Ashton’s college sweatshirt and Jake’s never liked me in shapeless clothes.

‘It’ll be cold at the beach,’ I say tentatively and he grins… Put on something a little cuter,

huh?”(63). In the song there’s a line which says “When I did all I could do, but you be wanting

more.” This connects to the quote from the book because both express a partner wanting more

from them even if they don’t want to do more. To add on, another quote from the book that

connects to the song is “how careful and contained I always had to be around Jake. If I was going

to the party tonight I’d always have to wear something he picked out, stay as late as he wanted,

and not talk to anyone who might make him mad.” This connects to the lyrics “You be way too

controlling, Got me feeling like I can't breathe,” because Addy talks about how she’d always

have to be perfect around Jake, and how he would control her life, similarly to how the song

talks about how the man is controlling and is making the singer feel as if she’s trapped.
